Not well built

By Jeff T. from Jasper, GA
Music Background: Music Producer, Engineer, Mixer

I have owned 4 of these with various problems. The first one, the dim switch broke in the on position, the next one, the volume pot became noisy with cracks and pops in the sound, the third one would get to a spot in the volume and the left side would drop out. The original one I purchased lasted almost 2 years before the first issue; fortunately it was still under warranty. I realize the components are cheap Chinese made but would hope for more longevity in each one. I am now on to what is number 5 as I like the functions, just disappointed with the build quality.

Great little box!!!

By John C. from NYC
Music Background: Drummer/Producer/Engineer

I needed a switcher to switch inputs between my mixer and audio interface. I didn't want to send output from the audio interface into the mixer which would add 'color' to my mixes but i still use my mixer for other purposes. Also, I'm likely to add another pair of speakers to my mixing.

I purchased the Baby Ram and couldn't be happier with it. It makes life in my studio so much more convenient while solving the mixer bypass problem. The device is totally silent and no color to the sound, the dim and mute buttons are a real added convenience. dialing in and 'marking' the volume level is convenient and accurate, the mono button is a nice added feature while mixing as well.

Love it! Highly recommended!

worth a bit extra

By Marc from Seattle area
Music Background: lifelong performer/audio engineer since 1967

Nice build and works well, evenly balanced left and right volumes at all levels as far as I can tell.
Using it to replace a Mackie Big Knob that had the common issue of the rotary pot being uneven from left to right so as you changed levels the balance would shift around a bit.

Has switching for balanced or un balanced inputsthat's global in nature. Since my main input is balanced but the second unbalanced I was having issues either way. converted source 2 to balanced via a passive ebtech hum eliminator and now when switching from the Apollo rack to my computer output the levels aren't drastically different.
Very happy with the unit and moreso with Sweetwater customer service as I originally bought a demo unit that had damaged jacks and they stepped up to replace it with a new one to make things right.

BEST PASSIVE MONITOR CONTROLLER...PERIOD!

By Sweetwater Customer

Just received my Heritage Audio Baby RAM monitor controller and I'm extremely happy with it! Not only is it a TRUE PASSIVE monitor controller that needs NO POWER, but it also has multiple ins and outs with the mono and dim buttons that are very handy for checking phase and mix peaks at low volume! The step gain on the Baby RAM also seems to really lock my monitors into a very even increase or decrease between each speaker with keeping the levels locked which helps in knowing that the monitors are getting even gain distribution between both. All to say....BUY IT, you won't be disappointed!!

Much needed and appreciated

By Sweetwater Customer from AZ

Upgraded from Big Knob. Night and Day in difference. Paired the Baby Ram with Hedd MK2s and its life changing. No more hissing. Nothing but clarity. I use less plugins now because I can hear what I didn't before.

Works great

By Jim from California

Originally bought the Behringer unit but had to return it due to the amount of noise that it introduced. This unit works great and is completely silent with the volume turned down or muted. I highly recommend it.

You can turn on both outputs simultaneously if needed. The clicking of the big knob is actually a plus.

The pictures are hard to tell how big it is. It's pretty big.

Worth every penny

By Brian from California

This thing is great! I've had a passive mackie big knob for a few years and I've tried using it in multiple configurations but it always added unwanted noise to my speakers which would eventually drive me crazy. Finally with this baby ram, I can listen and work frustration free. There's no difference when adding it to my signal chain and the stereo image is always as it should be with the stepped volume knob. It's a little bigger than the passive mackie big knob but it looks way cooler.

Reality Doesn't Match the Potential

By Devon D. from MA
Music Background: Studio Owner

Like some many folks on here, I appreciate the supposed build quality, simplicity, and small footprint of this controller. This is exactly the type of thing that a non-console studio needs without the unnecessary bells and whistles of notably more expensive units, but with a better feel than something like a Mackie Big Knob.

Unfortunately, all of this is moot if the unit doesn't work. Like some other reviewers, after a couple months of usage, I started to get notable issues with the volume dipping on its own or one side or the other not passing through audio. I went through all the troubleshooting around the unit since I assumed a 4 month old unit that is ostensibly a passive attenuator couldn't break that quickly. Turns out, it was indeed the BabyRAM.

When I reached out to Sweetwater, they were great about connecting me with Heritage Audio to get this fixed. There, I was told I'd need to pay the cost of shipping them the unit, potentially pay for the repair of the unit, and that they couldn't even look at the unit until 10 business days after its arrival (at the fastest). No good, Heritage Audio.

Thankfully, Sweetwater went out of its way to try to solve the issue and we'll find another unit. So great points for SW, not so ideal for Heritage. Maybe this BabyRAM needs to grow up!

It replaced my Mackie Big Knob, and it's a better choice

By Robert F. from Los Angeles, CA

I liked the Big Knob, but didn't love it (the buttons presses felt cheap, and the 1/8" jack buzzed a lot). The Heritage's buttons are a bit better, and I really like the discrete clicks on the volume knob. It took a bit to get used to the non-round volume knob, but I've come to like it a lot more: you can feel where you are in the volume spectrum without having to look at your hand controlling he knob.

A great unit... when it works

By Brandon from Brighton, MI
Music Background: Audio Engineer

I've owned the Baby RAM for nearly 4 years at this point. When the unit functions properly, it is a solid monitor controller. Stepped rotary knob, built like a tank, small enough to cram into a busy desk, etc. However, there are minor clicks and pops with this while muting/unmuting and dimming, in my experience. Overall, for the price, it was great... until it wasn't.

In 2022, I had to do a warranty exchange because of the rotary knob failing. After every day use, the rotary knob began to lose connection, and not just because the nut was loose. I mean, this issue would cut out my right channel nearly completely. I had to jiggle the knob just right to get it to reestablish the output (which was usually weak). This was disappointing, but Sweetwater was quick to send me a replacement! Thank you, Sweetwater!

Fast forward to this year, same exact issue occurred again. Unfortunately for me, I'm not under the warranty anymore, so I reached out to Heritage to help me troubleshoot. After a couple weeks of back and forth, it was determined I needed a new rotary knob... which is nearly a 1/3 of the unit price. My setup doesn't require a monitor controller for me any longer so I decided to shelve it until I want to fix it up. But this was a massive disappointment. Not sure if it's a quality control issue, but if you plan on using this controller daily, be advised that this will wear quickly. I'd avoid this product.

Baby RAM

By Sonny Y. from Florida
Music Background: Recording Engineer and Musician

Well....I have a $ Burl B26 Orca that has failed (yes $ and it started putting out distortion) and my Burl Mothership also has issues. So I went for a low cost "basic" monitor controller and the Heritage Audio Baby RAM came to the rescue. Works great....sounds s great! Easy to set up. Anyone want to buy a used B26 Orca???

Simple and Effective

By Don K. from Kansas
Music Background: Gigging musician and home recording enthusiast

This is exactly what I needed to switch between my two sets studio monitors. It's transparent. Built like a tank. I love the giant level know. Best $ I've spent on gear in a long time!

Not for me. Bulky and it will color your mix.

By Deeg from KISSIMMEE, FL
Music Background: Guitarrist

If you like a clean work space, that's not for you. It is huge and ugly. Also, It is not transparent. I could clearly hear the difference with/without it through my Focal trio6's. Save some money and get a used Dangerous ST like I did.

Transparent and simple

By Tommy C. from MT
Music Background: Purveyor of mediocrity in music and life

The Baby RAM has a simple design layout and is very easy to use. Its build really tough with a bent steel housing and quality jacks. Its simple so it only has 2 ins and outs in the patchbay. Its passive so it requires no power and its very transparent. Im currently using it with a pair of Avantone CLA-10A's and Avantone mix cubes with Monster Studio Link and Mogami cables. Its got a big huge knob that im not quite sold on. Id prefer a simple round one but it works good. Mono function is awesome for checking evenness of stereo mixes. The output buttons are self-defeating so you have to push one partially down and then press the other to get them both selected. The DIM function works good but I usually use the same function on my UA Apollo. Very nice nice unit and well worth the price. Simple design, easy to use and works without any coloring.

Transparent perfection

By Bill from Lawrenceville, GA
Music Background: 45+ years of guitar

This is an excellent monitor control that does not color the sound. The knob turns easily and quietly and the switches have a nice solid feel. I read a lot of reviews of other gear and as passive monitor controls go this one seems to be the winner.

Great Monitor Controller.....about that knob....

By Richard B. from Port Charlotte, FL

It works great and is very well built / sturdy. I found the knob it comes with to be a bit too big and tall - just found it a bit cumbersome to use I guess. I found another knob, as big as I could find that is more of the RCA style knob, but not quite the right size - it works - looks are questionable but a bit bigger (2") and the proper red color it would be perfect.

Heritage Audio - if you are listening, this thing needs the 2" RCA knob of the 50s/60s.

Built like a tank

By Alan A. from San Diego
Music Background: Producer, Recording Eng.

No noise, buzz or electrical interference. Buttons are responsive and feel durable. The unit is built like a tank and looks like it will last forever.

Cons: exclusively TRS i/o requires a lot of adaptors, but it helps with the small footprint.

Much more flexible than Mackie

By Steven
Music Background: Producer

I picked this up because my sub's stereo outputs died and I could not feed my monitors from the sub. This little beast has a unique feature that lets you use both outputs at the same time. Simply push both output buttons at the same time and boom, you have two outputs feeding two different speakers. You could do the same for the inputs, but I would advise against it. The Baby Ram is very neutral and I could not hear any coloration. I liked my Mackie, but the Baby Ram is just a joy use and is more flexible. I got the B stock and it looked just like new. I highly recommend.

Much more than I’d bargained for!

By Stranger P. from Arizona
Music Background: Composer, arranger, performer of classical & jazz

I didn't really NEED one of these. I'd added one to a wish list awhile back as a "maybe eventually" luxury item. But when the happy confluence of a demo unit becoming available and me having funds to match, I decided to go for it.

With my very first tracking session after acquisition, I immediately discovered this is no mere luxury item! Honestly, the main reason I was thinking to get one in the first place was to just not pop my monitors whenever the mixer came up, since I could never get those to synch nicely. So yes, the mute switch is a nice help. But then I didn't have any more excuses to not hook up the extra "trash can" monitors — and what a difference it makes being able to switch between those for knowing what's happening to my finals! Having another point I can route out from the mixer that I can switch in from source is also a nice bonus. But, as silly as it may sound, just having that Mono switch there is practically worth the cost and value alone! Being able to fold down the stereo mix, check my phasing, hear it in the trash cans, and all without having to screw with the mix config has improved my results dramatically, whilst also improving my workflow.

Bottom line: if you are producing something you intend other people to listen to, you need something like this.

Exceptional Customer Service

By Don K. from Kansas
Music Background: Gig musician and home recording enthusiast

The Baby RAM is built like a tank. It's simple and effective. I was a little confused about how the big volume knob worked. Turned all the way up to the right or 0db, the output is at unity. I called their home office in Madrid, Spain, and had a great conversation with "Sam'. Heritage Audio and of course Sweetwater Rocks!

DON'T RAISE THE PRICE BECAUSE IT'S AWESOME

By Mark K. from Beautiful Melbourne Florida
Music Background: Retired, loving life and my wife

This is a great passive monitor controller. The big knob is a stepped switch and does NOT change the tone as you attenuate the level. I set my monitor volume so they're 85 dB when this knob is all the way up. I reduce the level by -6 to -12 dB for quieter listening. I hit the mute button before I power everything down. The pushbutton selector switches all feel nice and positive. All the audio-electrical connections are balanced. Since this is a passive box there is NO AC POWER CORD, wall wart or line lump power supply to deal with. The steel enclosure has some heft to it so it stays in place.

The only way they could make the Baby Ram better is to add a couple more inputs and outputs :-)

I liked the first one so much I bought a second one. If you use active monitors with a DAW interface you need a volume control to mute your speakers in case something goes wrong. This box offers uncolored, hands-on control with THE features you need most for an incredible bargain price. Nice work Heritage!

Good music to you!

Nice, but Volume knob not good

By Sweetwater Customer

Ok device, but makes a lit of clicking noises, way too big in my opinion for what it is. But biggest problem is the annoying click the volume knob makes every time you move it. This seems like a product made for really old school folks or those who like ginormous control knobs. Not for me

March 31, 2021

Great Little Unit

By jf

Great little unit. No added noise or coloration to signal chain. The knob feels cheap because it's cheap plastic but can easily be swapped out. Mono and Mute buttons sometimes pass slight crackles making it not entirely silent. But these sounds only occur when the button is pressed and it's quiet enough not to cause concern or bother.

A temp solution

By Sweetwater Customer

Well 2/3 months in and mine has pretty much died. It did get heavy use I will say but the balanced channel pretty much is gone. The switch is starting to get crudded up and feels like it's wearing down internally. The switching started popping the speakers even the mute. Couple more days and it's getting tossed in the trash. While it worked it did sound really good and as a passive switcher it might be a valid option still. I would say just save up and get something quality like a Coleman or imperium or something if you want to go passive...This solved some problems for me for the past couple months so I can't complain.. you get what you pay for so I wasn't expecting a state of the art device.

Great for the price

By Craig from New Orleans
Music Background: Producer / Mixer / Engineer

This is a great piece for a small studio or home studio. It is crystal clear with no signal loss. It works very well, and having used many monitor controllers including the dangerous audio stuff, I think nothing comes close at this price point!

Great!

By Nick from Nj

Does exactly what it's supposed to...doesn't color the sound as far as I can tell. As others have said, it's bigger than you think. Looks cool on my desk.

A little bigger than I anticipated!!!

By Ed
Music Background: Production hobbyist

Very clean and doesn't color the sound at all. Functions as claimed. Constructed very well.

pic is clearly a joke, but it is was bigger than expected and built like a tank. Hope someone laughs at this.

Impressed

By Curtis H. from CO

Well Im impressed. Not sure what I was expecting but this surpassed them. For starters it looks way better in person than the pics. I was kindah expecting a cheap feeling affordable solution for passive monitoring. But it's really nice. It's bigger than I thought it would be. probably cause I'm used to the size of BAE knobs. But it's big like an apollo twin. Its got a nice heft and built with sturdy metal and solid switches.

The sound quality is great. I got it coming out a Crane song solaris so I can hear whats going on. Solid, mastering grade. Mono sounds excellent. simple functionality.

my only wants: Finer steps than 3 db. 1.5 db steps would have really been perfect. or at least 1.5 db steps at the usable range up to like -30

Other than that I think they nailed it. The only other mastering grade passive systems I would consider/have used are easily 3-5x more expensive.

If you need more IO add a coleman audio line switcher and you can get up to 4 pairs of speakers. Im good with the 2

Hats off Heritage Audio. This is exactly what I was looking for without breaking the bank

Absolutely color free volume controller

By Les P. from Southwest FL
Music Background: Multi-instrumentalist, engineer, producer, songwriter.

I've been using an old JBL RMC controller which is a digital device, very poor build quality and not transparent by any stretch of the imagination. The JBL was sitting between my Lynx Aurora and my Adam A7X's and was definitely the weakest link in my signal chain. The Baby R.A.M. is a perfect replacement since it's totally passive. Just think of it as a switch selectable pad for your powered speakers. It does NO coloration whatsoever and is so clean I'm going to get one for our commercial studio. I pre-ordered it months ago but it was well worth the wait. I also love the chicken-head knobs and color which matches my BAE 1073MP.
