M-Audio BX4 4.5-inch Bluetooth Powered Studio Monitor - Pair Reviews

120W Active Studio Monitor with 4.5-inch LF Driver and 1-inch HF Driver (pair)

Mixing on subpar studio monitors is an exercise in futility that will only lead to frustration. So, do your mixes a huge favor by upgrading to a pair of M-Audio BX4 monitors. Each of these compact studio monitors deploys a 4.5-inch Kevlar woofer and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter to deliver the clarity and detail you need to make proper mix decisions. A computer-optimized waveguide ensures precise imaging; an enhanced rear-mounted port works in concert with each speaker’s acoustically inert MDF cabinet and bass reflex design to yield low-end extension down to 69Hz. And if you need to further dial in your sounds, each BX4 includes a High- and Low-EQ control.

Best offer for the price.

They sound really nice, surprisingly decent low end. They feel solid, and look nice.

HIGHS- LOW AND MIDRANGE

By Michael D. from Charlotte, NC
Music Background: of the past , live sound, recording Bassist

The M-Audio BX4 are a surprise in a box. if you just go by visual inspection, you will miss the great bass they put out for their size. The next time I will go for the 5 " speakers. If the BX4 is this good on bass, I can only imagine what the BX5s are like. I am thinking af adding a Mackie Subwoofer as the M-Audio does not do Subs, unless they are doing something don't yet know about. if your budget is a little tight, the BX4s are a great choice.

Nice!

By Dan from Studio in the Clouds Indiana

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from these monitors just because of the size and price point. (Just needed something a little different for my home studio.) But, I have to admit I was surprised. The sound is crisp and clean. Quite a bit of punch in these little boxes. If you have a small studio, these will do just fine for you. Adjustable low/high response. Power/volume knob feels smooth and solid. Easy to hook-up for the beginner, with nice output & sound quality for the more advanced home studio folks. They of course wouldn't handle bass bomb sub-harmonics. That isn't what these are for, but even saying that, they do have a great bass response that makes them sound like a bigger monitor. Moving ahead, if I needed more sound, I would not hesitate to buy another set of there or even move up a size with the M-Audio.

Poor build quality

By Paul from Florida

I bought these in December for causal listening at my computer. The passive monitor had a low level buzz coming from the woofer cone from the first note played. I identified the problem as the speaker and not the active monitor's amp as I happen to have an old pair of M-Audio Studiopro3s and swapped out the passive speakers and the problem went away. The replacement pair were shipped right away - GREAT customer service. I put the replacement passive monitor in and the problem was gone so I shipped the bad speaker back. Unfortunately, now I am experiencing the same problem with the active speaker as a previous reviewer. That is, the active speaker volume randomly drops down and I am experiencing unwanted stereo ping pong. Not sure if I'll ask for a refund or hope that the third time is the charm. Sadly, I am very pleased with the sound of these speakers as long as the speaker balance isn't bouncing around.

M- Audio Not for serious mixing

By Robin R. from Greater Los Angeles area

I gave these monitors 3 stars instead of 2, for a couple reasons: 1. What can you expect for a $...?, and 2. They sounded pretty good for casual listening at this price point.

Due to the pandemic, I cannot work at the commercial studio that I usually do, so I'm creating a little recording setup for tracking at home. I don't recommend these monitors for final mixes, but they may be okay if you're just laying down some basic tracks to take to a commercial studio. They may be all right for multi-media, casual listening, etc., but definitely not for hearing a truthful representation of your mix as should be the case for audio monitors.

I have now decided to do a little more of the production here at home so these monitors wouldn't be too useful for that. But I did get what I paid for. I really wasn't going to return them at first. I thought I could keep them as an extra set of speakers at $... no big deal.

They are very, "Made-in-China" in terms of build quality. The thin, unbalanced 1/8" cable to connect the 2 cabinets was slightly ridiculous. But it worked. What didn't work after a couple uses was the active cabinet. It started cutting out and popping. The passive cabinet worked though so I think there's a serious problem with these monitors. Obviously, I had to return them. I suggest you spend a little more and get something of better quality and functionality if you're planning on using them for anything except basic tracking or bedroom production.

I give an A+ to Keith Klikas. He emailed me the return labels immediately, and was very accommodating. I am very happy with the JBLs I upgraded to and I thank Keith for helping me every step of the way. Go Sweetwater!

They aren't JBL 4311Bs, but they definitely sould great

By Tim J. from Huntsville, AL

I've used a pair of Alesis monitors for my mixing for nearly 17 years and my pair finally succumbed to the burst capacitor power supply failure on both.

I researched mid-range, powered monitors, and the BX line from M-Audio continually received high parks from people that I respect. Since almost half of my other computer audio equipment is M-Audio, I thought that I've give the BX line a try. When Sweetwater finally got in their shipment of the BX4 monitor - with a sale price that couldn't be argued with - I pulled the trigger. The package arrived quickly, my Alesis were relegated to my attic (yep, I hoard dead electronics), and the new BX4s took their positions on my monitor stands.

It only took one listen to an FLAC recording of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's "Firebird Suite" followed by Timo Mass' "Loud" and - WOW! The clarity and focus of these little guys is very surprising. They punch at a much higher weight level than their compact size would indicate.

The Sweetwater team were outstanding (as always) and Zac followed up with both email and a call.

Pros - Sweetwater service, Price, Size, Clarity, Response

Cons - You really need a sub woofer (and, Sweetwater has those!)
