Danelectro Baritone Electric Guitar - Black Metalflake Reviews

6-string Baritone Electric Guitar with Chambered Spruce Body, Hardboard Top and Back, Maple Neck, Pau Ferro Fingerboard, and 2 Single-coil Pickups - Black Metalflake

This sharp-dressed Baritone reissue from the 2019 Danelectro collection delivers the bass down low — real low. We're talking B to B. That's a perfect fourth below standard E to E tuning. And whether you're a downtuned country picker, a drop-tuned hard rocker, or an accompanist/recording artist on the prowl for alternate open-chord voicings, the Danelectro Baritone is built to take your music in exciting new directions. The hybrid 29.75"-scale-length maple neck makes a comfortable transition for bass players and guitarists both. Electronics-wise, two high-output lipstick pickups driven by a simple 3-way selector permit quick access to those coveted Dano Bari tones, along with a sweet, throaty breakup that won't leave you drowning in amp noise. All the while, classic Danelectro stylings — the Art Deco single-cut body style and iconic Dolphin headstock — make this bari a sweet addition to any collector's showcase.

A stunning amount of fun for the price.

By Joshua M. from Severna Park, MD
Music Background: youth pastor level strumming

I admit I bought this thing after seeing Phoebe Bridgers play it for NPR. It's just a lovely muddy rich tone and it's a godsend for a middle-aged guy trying to sing sad girl music in bars. Tuning my acoustic to Eb wasn't cutting it. For the price the meat and potatoes are great: a good neck and chonky sounding pickups. The setup & intonation out of the box are real decent. I generally care 1,000x more about how a guitar plays and sounds than how it looks but man this thing looks sick in black glitter. I recommend throwing some cheap speed knobs on there, the metal flake is dying for vintage-looking clear plastic.

You need one

By Lisa from Dallas, TX
Music Background: Musician

I was really curious about baritone guitars since I love low end sound. After watching some videos online with this model and went for it. I have zero regrets of any kind. It's such a soulful sounding guitar and is loud even not plugged in presumably due to the chambered body. Came with unidentified gauge of strings, but they are perfect. The neck feels great, and I can move across the fret board on this with ease. For reference, I usually play a Strat, a Paranormal short scale, or a Reverend. So far, this Baritone is the easiest one to play and I thought the Strat was easy-moving! You can't beat the quality and sound for the price. My only gripe is the incredibly limited case situation, but that's not a deal breaker for me. I wrote on a song on it right away and will be heading to the studio next with this sweet axe.

Danelectro Baritone - hits and misses

By CC from Texas
Music Background: Actively gigging musician; audio engineer

Hits: I like that this guitar has a really long scale length, it feels more natural to me as a bassist. The scale length also helps with maintaining string tension going to tunings as low as G standard, though going all the way down to E standard like a Bass VI didn't work very well. Also, the overall length of the guitar is just a bit shorter than a standard bass, so it will only fit in a bass guitar gig bag/case and not a standard guitar one.

Misses: The hollowed-out body on this guitar makes it feel extremely light and fragile. The guitar didn't have much sustain either, which might be because of the hollow body. I got so nervous about damaging this instrument at a gig or in the car that I eventually got a second baritone with a solid body that feels much more substantial.

Yes you need a Baritone!

By Stephen S. from SPANAWAY, WA

As an aged musician that still has an original vintage 1959 Danelectro wish book. I didn't blink when I saw this New Baritone. The old guitar has the wanky rosewood bridge that's never failed. Masonite body etc. I didn't know what to expect with these new retro models. I ordered the Black Sparkle one. Wow it's gorgeous! Came ready to play right out of the box. Perfect finish, fretboard, and all electronics passed QC. I just keep it tuned to B. Getting the Spaghetti Western MoJoe I was hoping for. It's very lightweight and comfortable to play. I'll definitely purchase another Danelectro guitar from Sweetwater. If you have doubts on Chinese or Indonesian manufacturing toss that doubt away. 68% of Guitars are being purchased by Asians! They want a quality built affordable guitar so the make them!

A great unique accent piece

By Sweetwater Customer

So this is my first baritone and my first Danelectro. It is a super unique (in a good way) instrument! If you're looking to expand your stable with a cool accent piece that sounds different than everything else you own this will certainly do the trick. I am still adjusting and learning how to use it effectively but it feels and sounds great. I think it will be a great studio tool and will inspire new creative ideas. It sits in a really interesting place between a standard guitar and a bass that takes some getting used to.

I did a ton of research on baritone guitars before settling on this one and as compared to anything else in this price range (Sure you could spend more than twice the money on a really sweet Rivolta by Novo), I think Danelectro really knocked it out of the park here. I actually even like this guitar better than the Reverend's that I've heard that cost several hundred more.

However, I did deduct half a star because of one small design flaw. The electronics access panel is only held on by one screw into a thin metal plate that creates tension against the body. This was rattling around every time i moved the guitar. At first I though the electronics themselves were loose inside the guitar which led me to opening up the access panel and discovering that the panel itself was actually the issue. I was able to quiet it down by wrapping the metal tension plate with masking tape effectively creating a spacer and pad that made it tight enough not to rattle around on there. Not a big deal, but mildly annoying. If this guitar cost as much as my Rickenbacker I would have returned it, but for $ OTD I expect to mod a guitar in some way or another.

Awesome baritone!

By Sweetwater Customer

Bought this after falling in love with my Danelectro '64XT. Feel, fit, and finish are fantastic for a guitar in this price range. And the sound...everything I'd hoped for. Bridge pickup gives you that Pet Sounds tic-tac, and the neck pickup is instant Twin Peaks theme. Love it!! Shout out to Chris Lewis, as always - I ordered online, but he made sure to follow up in person. Thanks, Chris!!

Don’t Hesitate, buy one NOW!

By Keith H. from Indianapolis, IN

I snagged this guitar after my lady found out one of her music icons played one of these (Phoebe Bridgers) I initially wasn't sure but I figured for the price tag I couldn't go wrong. And boy is this thing cool. Aside from the how cool the finish is, the neck and overall playability are great. Fret work is really good and it weighs hardly anything. I never really realized how much fun a baritone would be, but they're a boat load of fun for all applications. This is a seriously good budget buy!

Half a star off for...

By EEPG from PUNTA GORDA, FL
Music Background: Have earned dozens of dollars in bar bands.

This is a cool guitar! Love the "bowling alley chic" of the black metalflake! I had to take half a star off for a questionable manufacturing decision. The two screws that hold the pickguard on might have been useful for squirrel dentistry, but here they're just stupid small. They're basically truss rod cover screws (which get screwed into stronger wood, usually). Now, the pickguard has peel-off protective film on it. Try to pull it off with the pickguard on the guitar, and it leaves remnants around the screws. So, Step One is remove the pickguard so the film will come off cleanly. Great. Now it is IMPOSSIBLE to put the squirrel screws back in without completely stripping the screw holes in the particleboard (or linoleum, or whatever it is there). YES, they're that small. So, within an hour of receiving the guitar, I'm drilling out bigger holes in the pickguard and putting #4x3/8" pan-head Phillips stainless steel screws in (fortunately available at Home Depot). THOSE will hold. Sigh...Other'n that, you should know this: This is a very unique instrument. The tone is CUTTING like nothing else I've ever heard - that's very useful when you want it! The tone control DOES mellow it back if you need to. Also, since it's tuned a chunk lower than a guitar, chords fingered at the low end by the headstock sound goofy. Barre chords up the neck have much more musicality. Overall, it really does fill a useful gap between guitar and bass, but don't expect it to sound or act like either. Personally, I'm looking forward to playing picked bass parts on this through an octave pedal...yum!

Love it! Love Sweetwater!!

By Justin from Long Island New York
Music Background: Love playing guitar/bass and jamming with friends. 15 yr player.

I just received my Danelectro black metal flake baritone and I am in love!!Great build quality and tone!!!! Do not let the price tag fool you. This is a quality baritone!! Love those lipstick pickups!! Now let's talk about Sweetwater (I am a first time customer). Usually when I receive a guitar I have to polish the frets, setup it up,oil the fretboard etc.Not this time!! The only this I had to do is play it with a big stupid grin on my face like the Grinch. It came out the box perfect!!! This is now the only place I will buy from!! The 55 point inspection is incredible!! The customer service is incredible as well and you will not get this from any other company. Sweetwater has just gained a new lifelong customer! Thank you for everything Sweetwater!! I love you guys!!

Runaway Sleeper Hit!

By James from California
Music Background: Guitar

Even though you can file it under 'for the price' but really it defies that definition. Fit and finish is perfect, and Sweetwater's setup means it plays flawlessly out of the box. Truly inspirational and easy to play. Nice flat radius and nice modern frets (tall, narrow)

What a fantastic inspiration machine at any price point. The metalflake is stunning too. You won't regret it.

Note, does not come with case but you can get a Danelectro branded one elsewhere that fits baritone/bass specifically.
