Very happy
This is my first 5 string - my band plays a lot in D and C so I wanted more low end options
I went back and forth with a few 5 string options in and went for the Bb_435 based off strength of reviews alone - never even played a Yamaha before.
I'm delighted with the choice. The neck is extremely playable and fast. Lots of sound options via EQ.
It's on the heavier side but I play a Stingray 4 string so pretty used to having a tree round my neck.
Excellent all around
This is my first 5 string. I've played a Lakland Jazz as my primary for over a decade and wanted a cheap way to diversify. Wow, this bass checks every single box. It's affordable, feels great, sounds great, looks great. I'm not easy to please and I really have nothing but love for this bass. If you're looking for an excellent PJ 5 string for not much money, here it is. Thanks Yamaha for an excellent product.
After a few years...
I thought I'd add my review. I'm a guitar player that plays bass to complete my recordings, so I am no expert at the intricacies of what is good and bad regarding bass guitars. I own 3 and this is superior. Like another reviewer said, tight big sound, awesome action and intonation. QC is superior. The neck fastening seems awesome. The string thru angled anchoring just intuitively seems like a great design. Looks wicked. Chose 5 string cuz I play in drop C. Very easy to play. IMO better looking than a P. Always wanted one (since zee '80's). Yamaha case for this model is also beautiful.
Great Bass
This bass plays amazing. I decided to add a 5 string to my bass collection and this one was better than I expected. The through body design really increases the sustain and lets the notes ring out. Miles was great answering all my questions and the Sweetwater experience is one I highly recommend to other musicians and audio techs.
Impressed!
Truly a great instrument. I didn't know what to expect and I was impressed with the monstrous sound, specially for a passive 5 string.
Great bass with a small issues
I got this because I needed a better 5 string backup to my main bass and I wanted the P/J pickup config. Plus, I;m well acquainted with Yamaha's quality control, being a software QA guy myself.
I love the build quality, the tone, fit and finish, pretty much everything. But the fingerboard has those nasty white lines in the grain that won't come out, regardless of the amount of oil or steel wool I hammer it with. Oh well, I gave up after a couple hours and decided the tone and playability was more important.
So yeah, great axe but a minor issue. I only took 1/2 star off. I'd really like to try to the one with the alder/maple/alder sandwich body but honestly I don't need that. This one will do just fine -- as long as I don't stare at the fingerboard. :-)
Love my BB!
I've been a guitar player for over 35 years, and have always been able to get really good sounds out of fairly inexpensive gear. These days, I mostly write and record my own music in my home studio. I decided a good mid-line bass was necessary kit, so I started looking around. I've been really disappointed in the quality of a lot of big name brands of late, but had not given Yamaha a fair shake. I played a couple of their active basses and liked the feel, but felt passive was a better fit for my music. I had a conversation with my rep (props, Aaron Cieslikowski!!), and decided to put this in the cart. For me... awesome!! It played great, right out of the box. I did adjust the height of the low B a little higher because my bad technique was causing a click. This bass has a TON of sustain! Even unplugged, you can hear notes ring for quite a while. Tuning is very stable, finish is flawless... Only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the taper of the pots is not very smooth. They do all their work in about 1/2 the sweep. But for me, I playing with the all max anyway. If your thinking about one of these, stop! Just buy it! Superb. I am becoming a bass player because of this instrument. :-)
Great Bass
I am a beginning bass player and this is my second bass I am truly impressed with the feel and sound of this bass. Was looking for a bass with both a P and J style pickups this definitely fits the bill would recommend this bass to anyone. Definitely a few steps up from my "beginner" bass in both feel and look and sound quality.
Great feel and tone!
This bass is pretty light at just over 9#, it hangs well on strap (still a hint of neckdive despite the "lightweight" tuners) it has REALLY good pickups...the Alnico V's sound focused....great lowend gunt and mids, smooth up top, (not loud and harsh like ceramics can get at times... overall massive tone. The knobs / pots all feel heavy and substantial...the bridge and angled anchoring points for the strings I'm convinced help even out the tension across the strings / taut feel without being stiff. B responds well. Neck was dead flat, action is great. Neck profile is modern / thinnish, and plays well, finish is good. Would recommend.
