5 Stars For It's Price Point Performance

By Chris D. from Pensacola, Florida on October 7, 2021 Music Background: Lifelong Musician and Long time Recording Hobbyist

I bought the first generation Studio Projects B1 in 2003 and started picking up other SP mics shortly thereafter. In 2005 or there about I picked up the B3. I sold all the other SP mics since, with the exception of the B3 and C3. They were all of exceptional value, especially in the 2000s, before the market became over saturated with so many low cost mic options.

Anyway, I have much more expensive and higher-end LDCs in my mic locker, but the B3 is one of those swiss army knife mics that sounds pretty good on any and everything. I like to keep it on a boom stand just to cut scratch tracks or hit record whenever inspiration catches me in the moment. For as little as it costs it shouldn't work this well or sound that good IMO. I often fool myself into thinking I need to use a different mic for a "real" vocal track, for instance, but then realize that sometimes this is "the right" mic for my vocal. Even when there are better options it still works just fine on almost everything.

I've used the B3 on just about everything imaginable over the past 16 years. Acoustic guitars, kick, OH, guitar speaker,/cabinet/s, lead vocals, backing vocals, horns, etc. It just freaking works.

Now, I realize since 2005 that many mic companies have come out with more and more budget friendly and affordable options that have exponentially closed the price-to-performance gaps that once clearly existed in microphone manufacturing. For example, Behringer makes a B2 Pro that employs the same basic 797 K67 capsule and circuitry design and that gets a lot of love and equally a lot of hate among the home recording community. But the Studio Projects B series started it all in the early 2000s, and while it may be often imitated, it's never duplicated. This mic is brilliant at this price point factor, and at this price point it's still a top contender in the sub $ mic market, nearly two decades after it debuted on the prosumer music gear scene.

Taking this B3 to Malawi to be used by a Yawo National to record Bible lessons so that Yawo seekers can listen to biblical teachings i their native tongue and in private. I will send a photo to how it is being used. So happy to find exactly what was needed.

When i was starting to built my own studio and i needed a mic i could really count on and use for more than one thing and i have look threw hundreds of mic starting from Audio Technica, ending with AKG. So far this is the best mic i found.I used it on accousts, Vocals (AMAZING!!) amps and the sound is just amazing. All i got to say is if this mic worth triple of its value!!!

Excellent!

Bought this mic a while back, based on really liking SP's VTB1 preamp. I've been using it as a room mic for drums, which doesn't really put it's capabilities to the test. Then this week, I had a vocal session, with some singing and some rap. I was very, very impressed with the B3's clarity and even freq response through my DBX 376 channel strip. A slight bit of de-essing and light compression thru the DBX, and I doubt I will have to work very hard to achieve a great result during mixing. Great "bang-for-the buck"!!

Great mic for everything

By Eduardo Serrano from Cali, Colombia on October 14, 2013 Music Background: Experienced recording and mixing engineer

I purchased this mic back in 2005 and I´ve made all kind of recordings with it, I´ve taked it out for post sound recording and a lot inside the studio. This mic has a pleasing bright sound without being harsh. I use it specially for female vocals through a tube preamp and it sounds really nice. The multipatern allowed me to use it in M/S room recording for drums. This is a really nice mic overall.

Great mic at a great price

By Eric from Augusta, ME USA on October 11, 2006 Music Background: Recording engineer, composer and bass player

The B3 may not have the sound quality of an AKG or Neumann mic, but for the price it is outstanding. My primary use is recording vocals, and noticed that it has a very warm sound. In the figure 8 pattern, I sometimes even record two vocals at once with positive results. The last recording I used the B3 in the omni patten as an ambient mic for an acoustic guitar and it came out very clear yet full.

I really enjoy this mic and would recommend it to any musician on a budget.

Solid mic at a great price!

By Thom Untersee from New Hampshire on June 16, 2021 Music Background: 30+ years School Music teacher and Sound Engineer for professional venues.

I bought the mic to do some MidSide recording of my school groups. I paired it with a Rode NT1A and was not disappointed at all. The mic is seems to have a solid build. The only two concerns I have are: 1) the switches on the mic are a bit flimsy and don't clearly lign up with the corresponding marks and 2) it is quite difficult to place the mic in the shock mount. Both are things I can live with and at this price point, I'd rather have a good mic and possibly spend a bit more on an easier shock mount if need be.

good mic for the price

I knew someone that had great success recording with a Studio Projects C1 mic when he first started recording and I knew I wanted a similar mic when I was starting. recently i was fortunate enough to use the 800 dollar AKG 414 mic at a studio and i REALLY liked it but i can’t afford that right now. i started looking for a mic that would have some of the same features including multiple patterns and sound similarities. I decided to give the B3 a try since it would allow me to record with the three different pattern positions and I figured it should record as well as the Studio Projects C1. I’m happy with my decision and I would recommend this mic to anyone in my same position.

This a good mic for the person on a low budget that wants a good condensor mic with multiple patterns. I mainly record acoustic guitar and vocals in my home studio but I’m sure that this mic can do a lot more…I can’t wait until I use it on guitar amps and other instruments. I would love to record with the AKG 414 all of the time and wish I could own 2 of them, but for now the B3 will do just fine. Any newbie won’t be disappointed! My only advice would be to get a decent preamp (500 bucks or more), and if you have to go cheap on the mic pre I would probably go with the Studio Project VTB-1. I made the mistake of getting a cheap Presonus mic pre and I wish I had gotten the Studio Projects. Just my opinion!
