Versatile, Clean, Affordable

By William from KY

While my immediate impression was that of a very bright condenser mic, with a little EQ it works well for vocals, acoustic guitar, drum overheads, room mics. Hard to beat.

Probably one of the best mics I've ever used

By C from KANSAS CITY, MO
Music Background: DJ, Radio drama writer/producer

I avoided this brand like the plague for the longest time. I had a history of being stuck playing shows with Behringer equipment that was incredibly unstable. My rider had a rule- no Behringer equipment outside of the venue's setup.

I recently got into foley production after years of exploring it as a possibility and this mic was recommended to me by a friend who works in both music production and has done some foley work. I was incredibly hesitant, but he told me that it's one of the best mics he's used both for foley and other purposes. So I pulled the trigger and I'm happy I did. This mic is great for everything to be honest. Highly recommend, especially considering the cost.

Great room mic for video

By Walt from Michigan
Music Background: Hobbyist.

Definitely does not break the bank. A couple of these in the room for a group interview setting work wonders. Being able to switch patterns is wonderful to help control room acoustics. Articulate enough to make any voice sound good with a little massaging in software.

Good Performer

By radiocowboy from Michigan
Music Background: engineer

While Behringer is not a name you associate with terribly high quality, the B-2 has been a great performer for us for years. I bought this mic for open mic studio work back in 2003 and I found it was way too sensitive to be used with an open monitor of any sort. About 3 years later, I traded the local radio station I was working for, this mic for a sound card they had. I have to say that the mic has worked as a radio production mic for nearly 12 years now. Other than the shock mount getting messed up from time to time when announcers pull on the mic, the mic itself has been a terrific performer. It gives the natural warmth of a B77 ribbon velocity mic, while having the clarity of a modern mic on our old Valley 401 mic processor. The EQ curve is punched up some on the Valley, but the mic has taken a beating in the production room and has never failed once and still sounds great. The boss prefers to do his vocal work on this mic over an RE20 or any other mic in the studio. The sensitivity is so good, it's actually hard to keep the room rumble under control. A little gating in the processor does help with this, though. I did record a high school Christmas concert with this mic back when I still owned it and that broadcast is still one of the better sounding ones I've ever done, thanks to this mic. So while not esoteric, nor expensive, the B-2 seems to defy the usual mediocre offings from Behringer. For the price, you can't beat it. It does have a three pattern switch and a rolloff switch, which works well. If you can't afford an expensive mic, you can get pretty good-to-excellent results with this one and at a good price point.

Underdog.

By Jeremy l.
Music Background: Producer musician working live sound and studio recording for 2 years. Going to Ithaca college to study recording

I purchased a pair of these guys about a year ago. Let me just say I have been and continue to be both impressed and pleasantly surprised by these little microphones. They come with every you need, windscreen and shock mount all bundled up in a nice little case that I have to say is quite sturdy. The features make the microphones very versital and I have used the to mic just about everything including, acoustic guitars, bass, keyboard and guitar amps, piano, drums and even a musical saw. I've had the benefit of working with microphones of much higher price points and let me say these little guys can definitely deliver. I will say this though, the shock mount is a little difficult to position and I have also noticed that there is some self noise up in the 17-22kh range. Other than that I've found these microphones to be very clear they have too me a bit of a greater presence in high mids. These things are also really sturdy. I was working a chorus concert providing sound reinforcement and one of them took a fall from the top of a boom stand. One of the performers picked it back up and it was fine for the rest of the show. Aside from haveing to pop the grill protecting the diaphragm back into place it was fine and I've been using it since with no issues. My favourite things to use it on are piano and as drum overheads. I've found them to really excel in those two applications reproducing a very rich full bodied sound across the spectrum. Highly recommend these microphones to beginners. Very good option for budget projects.

In Love

By Jonathan C. from Lexington, VA
Music Background: Classical concert pianist crossed over to electronic music

I've worked with AKG c414's and a variety of Neumann mics when recording in pro-studios. Although this mic does not match the detail and warmth of those mics, for something I could actually afford to buy, the B-2 Pro is mindbogglingly close to such high-end mics in sound-quality. I'm deeply in love with it and have been taking it everywhere I go with me. Now I can't wait to buy a second so I can get a stereo field on my recordings!

B-2 Pro Hits the 10 Ring

By Sweetwater Customer from Florida
Music Background: Engineer, producer, musician, singer, and professional button pusher.

I got this mic for vocals and acoustic instruments, as well as drum overheads. When I got the first one it blew away mics costing hundreds more. The highs were clean and bright, mids were well separated and very clean, the lows equally so. Even with a low end pre amp this mic sounded great. I A/B this in a local studio with a Nuemann U87 running though a 737. The results were jaw dropping. While the U87 still won the day, this mic is right up next to it in sound quality. This thing beat the pants off a Telefunken U47 and U48!

HOWEVER!

THE ATTACK OF THE BEHRINGER KRAKEN!!!

The second mic I got was garbage, something was wrong with it from the factory. The third was just as good as the first, so like most of Behringer's products this suffers from the not so good quality control at the factory. The replacement Behringer sent me was a good one, so only half a star was deducted, simply for the factory quality control. I have owned these now for over a year, and added 2 more (both modded) and have had no issues with the mics or any of the parts included with the mics.

Bottom line, if you are starting out in recording get six of these. The make good tom mics, overheads, and really good acoustic and vocal mics. any mid level pre-amp will make them shine, however the Bheringer USB interfaces (no HD models) make these sound muddy. The MIDAS equipped interfaces work good with these mics, but dedicated preamps really make them stand out.

Yes you may have to send one or two back for replacement (Beheringer, get your QC up to par!) but once you have the good ones, you will be set.

Recording Project

By David N. from Virginia Beach, VA

I recently bought a pair of C3s and a B2 for my home studio and connected them to my TASCAM Digital Recorder. I used them to capture my Roland keyboard amps in a stereo configuration for a music project I am working on and on playback was amazed at the audio quality that was captured. These microphones are flexible and provide a true representation of the sound and frequencies that are being recorded. Did I mention the price which can't be beat. I have used other more expensive microphones but these provide excellent quality with breaking the bank.

Tremendous Value

By Mark J. from Ann Arbor, MI
Music Background: Recording Engineer, NVH / Sound Quality Specialist, NVH Manager

So...I was looking for a few switchable pattern LDC microphones that weren't insanely expensive. Given the price, I had my reservations that it would actually be useful and perform well. I also figured that if it was sub-par, I could always return it, or simply use it for non-critical use.

I'm really, really pleased with both the fidelity and features of this microphone. No, it's not a U87, but then again...the price...

If you look at the stated specifications, they are actually remarkably good. To be fair, I have heard some people knock this because of its somewhat 'bright' sound, and this is pretty accurate. However, if the brightness is not to your liking (it varies, logically enough based on the polar pattern chosen), judicious EQ can remedy that - especially if you have some of the more capable plug-ins for your DAW. An added benefit of this approach is that can lower the noise level a bit (around 2- 2.5 dB) by applying the correction.

Would I like perfectly flat response? Of course, however at this price, you simply cannot go wrong.

Having two of these opens up a lot of possibilities for very little 'cabbage'. You can implement M-S (again, due to switchable patterns) or a Blumlien approach (using the velocity (180 degree)) settings, as well as use them as omni's, or a M-S using an omni pattern for the 'M' mic if that's more to your liking.

What's the down-side? You may get disapproving looks from people who might see this choice as akin to being a poser; it sure looks similar to a U87 (again...I know, it's not), and it is after all, a Behringer mic, and in some studios / with some clientele, that could very well be an issue (not having better-established or top-shelf gear is seen by some as an indicator that your studio or gear selections and judgment are suspect), so be prepared to deal with that.

Still, the proverbial proof is in the pudding...and I would argue that used properly (like any mic), and placed judiciously, this mic will deliver surprisingly good results.

In closing, I have to say that I own and use some Neumann gear, and I deeply respect and admire their quality and lineage in their products. However, I truly believe that if you want a mic that delivers really good sound at a very low price point (and is very flexible), you should consider this mic. I know I'll probably take some heat for this, but I'm cool with that.
