The beating heart of my studio.

By mack from Houston, TX on February 7, 2020 Music Background: music producer, alternative artist, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, engineer and an analog synth freak !

For years I had no idea how important a control room monitor would be to my system. Over the years, I have slowly grown up from my original Apollo 8 and Dangerous D-Box setup to having a hardware gear collection (great stuff like Shelford channels, a Curve Bender, Neve 5059, Tube-Tech Cl-1B comp, etc.) and kept feeling I was missing something that would enable me to use my gear to it's maximum potential.
The d-box was fine for years, but I already upgraded to a 2 Bus + and felt I needed to up my monitoring situation as well after hearing how my music was translating at major festivals and venues.

Then on a research whim, I came across articles online about how important a control room monitor is to a recording studio, and how it can affect how you are able to hear an honest representation of the music. I was highly considering another recommended monitor, but decided to go with the Orca because I LOVE my Burl B2 Bomber ADC and DAC so much. And I'm so glad I did.

I instantly heard a huge improvement on my old Genelec 8040's (it really is like "taking a sheet off your speakers", as they say in the manual) and sounds superior on my newly upgraded ATC SCM45's… I can finally hear exactly how my recordings and mixes sound: incredible depth and bass extension down to floor, wide 3D imaging and detail... everything translates so well now.

A few months after purchasing, I found out that Burl had upgraded the unit with new OP-amps. After emailing tech support from Burl, they kindly allowed me to buy the new OP-amps AND replace them myself in my studio! Right away, even more 3D imaging and tightening of the lows, clarity in the highs. Worth the extra upgrade.

Those online articles I read were true. It doesn't matter if you have the best monitors and most expensive, prestigious gear in the world. If you can't accurately hear what that gear is doing, its pretty much worthless.
