Evans UV2 Coated Drumhead - 18 inch Reviews

18", 2-ply Batter Drumhead (14mil) with UV-cured Coating

If you're tired of your coating wearing thin long before your heads wear out, drummers at Sweetwater recommend the Evans UV2 series. The UV2 is made from dual plies of breakthrough 7-mil film, each layer protected by a patented UV-cured treatment, to generate a rich tone and pre-EQed attack from your floor toms. And at 14 mils total thickness, the UV2 is made tough to resist wear from flams, rimshots, and brush swirls. The UV2 also boasts Evans' Level 360 collar, which seats the head evenly along the bearing edge for better tone and tuning. If you're looking for extra longevity from your 2-ply coated heads, then you'll definitely want to check out the Evans UV2 series.

UV2: Is It For You??

By Sweetwater Customer from NY

I am very impressed with Evans heads in general and the UV series in particular. Although the coating is a bit "plastic milk bottle looking", it is bright white and it remains that way virtually indefinitely. Though I am not a brush player, these heads should be superb in this regard, given the texture of the coating material.

The UV2 batter heads are on all my Toms and Roto Toms, from 8" to 18". If Evans manufactured a 6" or bass drum batter heads in the UV2 line, I would have tried them also. As such, I have a UV1 on my 6" and an EQ3 on my 26" bass. The UV2 heads sound warm without seeming dark or dull, and predictably, they tame to some degree the very bright and wide open characteristics of the UV1, without the tendency to make drums sound like cardboard boxes. This is likely due in part to the double, thin, 6.5 mil construction.

One small caveat which surprised me: I tried a UV2 on my Brass Ludwig snare to cut down the ring just a bit, as I do like some ring from a metal snare. I wound up preferring the sound and feel of the UV1 on the snare, as the UV2 seemed to actually increase the ringing at tight tunings. Though the head was fine as a snare batter, it displayed characteristics which seem to be at odds with what most would anticipate.
