The best piccolo snare that you can currently buy!

By Russ Murphy on January 6, 2020

I've been playing piccolo snares since 1965. The brands that I've played include: Ludwig, Premier, Rogers, Sonor, and Pearl. The shell materials of these snares include: aluminum, maple, poplar, lancewood, brass, chromium, and steel. Aluminum, poplar, and lancewood are structurally unsound materials. Either, the drumheads or the shell itself will be damaged at the high tension levels necessary for proper tuning. To my ears, chromium and steel shells sound dissonantly bright. Maple shells sound great, but they have more bottom end, and kind of defeat the purpose of a piccolo snare. The brass shell has the right balance of: articulation, punch, and ring from super-soft to super-loud. I recommend using a Remo Diplomat 7.5 mil batter and a Remo Diplomat 2 mil hazy reso to compliment the tonal characteristics. If you want to reduce ringing, play around with the batter and resonant head tension. Try 311 Hz for the batter and 277 Hz for the resonant head. Don't use thick or double-ply heads! Don't tune either head above 400 Hz. Don't use super-heavy drumsticks. The thickest sticks I use have a .565 inch diameter. I've had my Pearl B 1330 piccolo snare since 2008 and it still sounds fantastic!

Bought this for my son for his birthday & he states the brass piccolo has a great snap & awesome pop!!! He is very pleased with this piccolo. Plays in a pentecostal type setting & has a distinctive sound for the genre he plays.

I love this snare drum. It's light weight and the sound is superb. Very high quality. I have a pearl drum set but use this snare because of the sound. Played all through school, as a studio drummer, Played in the Marine Corps and now in my church for 21 plus years. I've been playing 58 years.

Great piccolo snare

By Russ from Midwest on June 11, 2019

This is a fantastic piccolo snare. I bought this for the sentimental value. I grew up playing a piccolo snare as my main in a hard rock setting. I've always enjoyed very fast, poppy, high pitched snare drums. My old one was a maple shell, but I like the tone of the brass even better. I'm honestly not a fan of the stock heads because my preference is for a different brand. Simply a personal preference. I will probably get a new set of 16 strand snare wires for it as well. But even out of the box it sounded great after tuning it up. As a side snare or a main this is a great option.

Crisp Little Cannon Cracker!

The only reason that this did not get a full 5 is that are other piccolo's that will blow you away.
For the price, this one is the choice!
It is a killer little side rig or for those sessions that call for a higher pop.
Quality construction and killer sound.
