Aguilar AG Preamp/Direct Box Reviews
If you want that Aguilar sound without the footprint of an amp head, Sweetwater’s got the pedal for you: the Aguilar AG Preamp/Direct Box. The AG pedal offers that beloved AG tone plus tight, fast response and plenty of tonal sculpting options. A 4-band EQ and footswitchable deep and bright controls give you additional depth and presence for bass tone that’ll shock the masses. Other aspects like pre/post and ground lift controls make this a well-equipped pedal for any occasion. Plus, with 18-volt operation, you can rest assured of clean and transparent headroom. Aguilar also included a built-in headphone out so you can practice silently wherever you need. You care about your bass tone, and that’s the perfect reason to invest in an Aguilar AG Preamp/Direct Box!

Really enhances the sound of a passive bass.
Perfect preamp for church
It does exactly what its designed to do
Great little Preamp
This thing may be small in size but it is BIG on tone. Going ampless at church requires a good sounding preamp and this one fits the bill.
Amazing sounding and versatile
Just got the AG Preamp. I use the AG700 so I wanted something to sound like my normal amp when I am going direct. The preamp sounds great. Very clear and not overly aggressive or harsh. Easy to dial in. The deep and bright will be useful! Great size for a pedal board. I have it coming after my HX Stomp to give me a quick way to teak my sound. Only thing I'm not a fan of is that the deep and bright are always "auto on" when the pedal is powered on. Not a huge deal since you just have to press a button, but I like my pedals to remain how I left them when I power off. This is probably just me though.
An unremarkable preamp in a crowded market...
PROS: Nice construction. I think it looks pretty cool. Handy little size. Nice 4-band EQ, although it's nothing special. The bright/deep/both switch is a little clunky to select, but it's functional and useful. Has aux/in + headphone jack, which is handy and unusual, especially among Aguilar products. The tone is similar to the AG700, of course, which can be a good thing if you like it. It's pretty clean/transparent without any noticeable added noise. I think it sounds good, but any tonal nuance won't translate to a mix, live or recorded. It will just sound like a bass, and it will be indistinguishable from other similar DIs. CONS: 18V power supply not included, and it doesn't take batteries or use phantom power. The Tonehammer pedal does offer all three ways to power it. No unaffected output thru-channel, which is not cool. It's cool that it's small/light, it's not a suitable standalone - it *really* needs to be mounted on a board. A very small tug from a bass cord, and it will flop around like a matchbox. This diminishes the value of it as a headphone amp. E.g., a Helix Stomp holds up well as a standalone desktop unit. The AG preamp does not, and who wants to put their whole pedal board on their desk? Overall, I feel like the Tonehammer offers a lot more for the same price; although the tone is a little different, and I think the AG preamp introduces less noise. For $ the AG preamp is by no means a bad buy, but there are so many other choices that seemingly offer more.
