DANTE Overview

By Eric R. from Millbrae , California

I started my DANTE journey with the goal of moving my audio system from my my office to the living room. Also I want the preamp, amps with speakers and 2 left/right subwoofers to be separate from each other for aesthetic purposes. The original issue was I did not have audio cable specifically for that when I remodeled my house but I did run a lot of dedicated cat 6 ethernet ports. After discussing the situation with my rep, he suggested that I look into using DANTE. I look it up and decided on that solution. So I bought 2 input adapters and 2 output adapters to test the concept. I am using UBIQUITY for my network equipment and running UNIFI.

My first attempt was a fail...the latency were too high and I cannot get it to stabilize. Connections were dropping in and out and I was very frustrated. I sent a not to Audinate support and they were very responsive and gave me some tips to try to isolate what the problem. After trying all their suggestions, I figured the best way to reduce the latency is to put them in a separate dedicated vlan. That made them more stable. I went one step further and put them all in dedicated switches. This has solved all the latency issues and made this move palatable. I mapped the left and right outputs to my subwoofer as well. The free DANTE controller was great in doing the routing instructions!

Now on to audio quality...I think i did lose a bit of fidelity but not by much. If these system is used by studio engineers to for live sound, it should be good enough for audiophiles. I think based on my ears, it was good enough as a trade off in being able to move my audio equipment without bulky xlr cables.

Will I reccomend this to someone else....only if you are faced with the same dilemna that I have. But technically, you can use DANTE to do multi room audio if you want to!
