Hypercardioid Dynamic Drum Microphone

Whether you use it on a tom, snare, or other percussion instrument, the super-rugged Audio-Technica ATM230 hypercardioid dynamic drum microphone takes high SPLs like a champ. Armed with a rare earth magnet, the ATM230 delivers massive lows, excellent attack and transient response, and incredible output. Its hypercardioid design reduces pickup of unwanted sounds, yielding terrific isolation. We threw this mic at all kinds of loud sources here at Sweetwater and were thrilled with the results. If you can hit it with a drumstick, the Audio-Technica ATM230 hypercardioid dynamic drum microphone can capture it.

Best Floor tom mic

By Ef

I've tried many mics on floor tom but this one beat them all.

Less Good Than Older Version

By Jack B. from New Mexico
Music Background: Recording Engineer

I have an older set of these [3pk]. I've used them for some time now, and like how they sound. One of the things I like the most about them is that the entire outside of the mic is constructed of really tough metal.

We rearranged the kit recently, and added a timbale, requiring another mic. So, I ordered another of these. The structure surrounding the grille is now a plastic part. Call me cynical, but I can only assume that some MBA saved a few cents per unit and made their bonus for the year - by making this [in my opinion] less durable

It sounds good, so I'll keep it, and use this one on the snare bottom, where it's unlikely to get whacked by one of the animals that comes and tortures this kit on the regular.

Already a classic tom mic!

By Mike Y. from Santa Rosa, CA
Music Background: Professional drummer, songwriter, home studio engineer

I used to have 2 ATM-25's on my floor toms and loved them - but sadly lost them in a fire. I replaced them with ATM-230's and honestly they're just as good if not better! The profile on the ATM-230's is more compact than the ATM-25, so easier to use all around the kit. All the things you read in the other reviews is spot on. Great frequency response, tone, warmth, clarity, punch, depth, isolation,....

I even put these on my rack toms (where previously I used Sennheiser e604's), and the ATM-230's just have more punch and depth. Bang-for-buck, you can't go wrong with these - but regardless of their more than reasonable cost, the ATM-230 stands on its own!

Fantastic for high sound pressure levels from guitar as well

By Pat I. from Akron, OH
Music Background: Musician, songwriter, worship leader

At the advice of a seasoned sound engineer, I decided to try this mic as a guitar cabinet mic. What I immediately noticed is the ability to drive my amp harder while still keeping it close to the cabinet, thus not inviting stray ambient noise. The response range of the mic picks up plenty of the percussive chug of heavy riffs from my Tubemeister, the sparkle of my Fender HRD and Blues Deville, and still captured the chime of my AC30. It's especially great for an isolation cab, where volume is high and speaker distance is at a premium. I'm in the market for three more for more guitar and drum applications. Definite winner in my book.

A lot of sound!

By Todd S. from Parker, CO
Music Background: working musician, playing 40+ years, very picky about my sound.

Excellent mic for toms of all sizes, even 18" floors... not so great on kick drums although I imagine with enough time and effort (and outboard gear) they would sound as good as anything else. After all, I've heard SM57's on a kick and they killed! (with a ton of eq, compression, etc.)

I purchased a pair to use on my 13" and 16" toms and I wasn't disappointed. They seem to pick up every little nuance of a drum, very full and just offer "more" sound than comparable mics like the Sennheiser e904. The AT's have the upper hand when it comes to polar patter (tighter) which means less gating. They eq very well but while capturing the low end, seem to leave out some thump on the floor tom. Hard to describe but they seem to sound a bit more "transparent" than let's say an e904 which seems to have a tighter slightly dampened sound, kind of fat but lacking in other areas.

I'd have to say, with the rugged housing, higher output than the e904 mics, a better designed clip, tighter polar patter, and just loads of sound, these mics just kick a**!

New version of ATM25

By Deege from Ohio

If you loved the ATM25 mic, I believe this is the same capsule, with a very slight upper mid bump...fantastic microphone for toms. They special ordered a 3 pack for me. I already owned two ATM25s and wanted a few more, and since ATM25s are twice the price (used) most of the time, I took the gamble on trying these out, and I was blown away. It's basically the same mic, same great low end response, takes EQ just as well...I usually have to EQ the ATM25 anyway, so the slight upper mid bump actually makes me have to EQ it slightly less.
