WOW!!

By Robinson on June 16, 2023 Music Background: music producer and mixing engineer

This is the best value for money headphones I have ever owned and used. I love the smooth top end and the bass response. I mean it's way flatter a well known brand headphones that I used to use which I got at $. I have tried 4 different audiophile headphones under $ and this is by far the best value for money headphones, only the shuresrh1840 can compare and that's like $ more that this one and that comes with less enjoyable bass response. This thing is by far the most under rated audio product I have ever owned. It's just wow! Audiotechnica has surely outdone themselves on this one, moreover on their very first try. Every music producer and engineer needs to know about these.

So good

All-around excellence

By Sweetwater Customer from California on April 20, 2021 Music Background: Audiophile, Guitar Player, Home Recording

These headphones hit the spot for me. I wanted something that would sound great for casual music enjoyment, critical listening, and be neutral enough for amateur mixing. The sound signature is pretty warm and pleasant with no harsh frequencies; I can listen for hours. The soundstage is wide open.

Despite the funky-looking design, the headphones are very comfortable. They are incredibly light! One thing that may bother some is the size of the earcups. They are not that big, probably better described as on-ear rather than over-ear.

Excellent but power hungry.

Fantastic headphones. Sound is accurate but also pleasurable to listen to. Mids and highs are buttery smooth, and the low end has the just the right amount of punch and articulation. I do wish the ear pads were a bit bigger, but they're still super comfortable to wear, and the ear pads can always be replaced down the road.

With an impedance of 470 ohms, you'll need some power to get the most out of these headphones. If you don't already have a dedicated amp you may need to buy one (something to keep in mind). If you have an audio interface I would suggest running the headphones through the interface first. My Focusrite Clarett 2Pre provides just enough power and sound excellent with their built-in amps.

Faithfull and Longevity Reference

By Oz from Orlando, Florida on February 10, 2019 Music Background: Worship Music Production

The ATH-R70 is very detailed or faithful to the sound, light, well constructed, and allows me to conduct reference monitoring for long periods of time. I compared these headphone with other well known brands in its price range and to my taste...these are the ones. The spring loaded head arms are surprisingly comfortable.

Very Very Nice Headphones

Of course these would go on sale after I buy them. These are amazing. The build quality is very good and the sound is very neutral. I am a big AT fan and these do not disappoint.

Best I've Used Yet

By Gene Hood from Seattle, WA on September 11, 2018 Music Background: Professional Musician, Engineer and Producer

I have been recording music for longer than I care to admit. Having project studios most of that time, I have used many types of tracking headphones for the obvious reason that I didn't get a lot of bleed into microphones. I have stayed clear of open back headphones because of the cost mainly. I had a need for a nice set of reference headphones to mix and master with. I needed something comfortable and accurate. I tried out several, returned a few pairs and finally, after a couple of years of lightly searching, I bought these. When mixing it often times it's not what you hear but rather what you don't hear. After getting used to them for a few days, I started to mix a song for an upcoming release. I immediately heard clarity and along with that came definition of not only the sound I wanted to hear but also the sounds I did not. These cans are worth every penny. Thanks to my Sweetwater rep David Merkosky, I ended up with this particular model. If you are mixing or mastering these are definitely a great direction to take.

Amazing!

Flat and Precious

By Wai from GUANGZHOU CHINA on May 24, 2018 Music Background: Game Music Producer

Really high quality sound with very light weight, this headphone gave me so much realistic that other headphone doesn't. It sounds warm , and could be great to listen to male vocals or METAL/ROCK music.

Awesome

Worth every penny. Very good sounding headphones

Glorious!

By TRLJ from Birmingham , AL on April 20, 2017

I 100% agree with the first reviewer. Very similar experience. I have been using these for around 6 months and couldn't be happier. Sound amazing and very comfortable and light weight. Plenty loud enough plugged straight into my MBox Pro. No amp needed. Thank you Mac Hatton for steering me in this direction.

Great Headphones

By Jonespnice from Ohio on July 10, 2016

First off I have to say that I never considered purchasing an open end headphone but I was watching a couple of videos with an established mastering engineer and he was saying how he uses the Sennheiser HD 650 headphone for a secondary reference so I decided to try them too, because my sub-woofer isn't the best and plus my room's walls are concrete and I have bass problems that don't allow me to hear everything that I want to. I called Mac Hatton at sweetwater and explained to him what I wanted, he was very knowledgeable about the subject and he explained that he had been personally testing a pair of open end headphones that he thought were as good if not better but alot cheaper (the ATH-R70X), I did a little research and called him back a few days later to order them. When they arrived I was blown away at how detailed they sounded, I was able to hear the bass unlike I had previously, I thanked Mac for steering me towards this headphone. This headphone is not hyped up loud and bass heavy but it is very detailed in the range that had evaded me for so long. Now when I say detailed I mean detailed, previously I was using the DT 770 pro headphones and I was listening to a song that my brother had sent me and I could feel something didn't sound right but couldn't put my finger on it (it was almost like one instrument was playing a bad note) but after listening with the ATH-R70X headphones it became very clear that he had played the right notes but it sounded like the overtones were clashing and not the fundamentals of the notes of the two instruments in question, I suggested he change one of the instruments to a different instrument and everything fit together more effectively. Out of all the equipment that I've purchased in the past few years this may be the smartest purchase, I would suggest this headphone to anyone.

No eq added & real wide sound

This headphone is amazing. The R70x's are perfect for mixing If something sounds bad on these its because these do not give a pretty sound (Thats a good thing) that simply means you need to fix what is sounding bad in your mix. This is a must have for the pro studio

Outstanding

This product is awesome! Audio-Technica has come through again with a high quality product at an attractive price. Sweetwater is the place to do business. My sales engineer Mark Thompson has never let me down with product recommendations.

Great

By Sweetwater Customer from Las vegas, NV on November 11, 2021

In terms of built quality, I love the self adjusting band and the lightweight feel of the headphones. They look really cool too (better looking than the 650s in my opinion). Well built but is more of a studio headphone vs a travel headphone. The downsides of the headphone would be that you can't tell which cup is left or right and the cable for me is annoyingly long but that's way better than having a cable that is too short, however, these are minor cons for me. The sound is great. Butter on the top end. These are my first open back headphones and they straight up sound like my monitors, kinda trippy tbh. I never liked headphones because my ears would get too fatigued and I would get a headache but based on first impressions I will definitely be using these during late night sessions due to their lightweight construction and non fatiguing neutral sound. Overall I recommend them.

Which goes where?

By Sweetwater Customer on April 12, 2019

Excellent headphones - comfort and sound. I took away a half point due to the fact that the ear cups are not clearly labeled Left and Right. They are labeled but with a very small raised font - especially difficult to see in dim lighting. I had to put sticky labels on the cans to identify them. This is not a classy look...

Best set of headphones I've owned by far

Wouldn't Buy Again

By marcus strong from Sunnyside, UT on December 10, 2019

Had them for a month now.

Pro's
-Light
-Good Quality Sounds

Con's
-Too expensive for what you get
-Ear Pads are too small, they hurt my ears
-Can't tell left from right without good light, not studio friendly.

I really needed a good pair of headphones for my studio. I've been using Sony MDR-7506 for years now. I thought these would be better. I needed a little better quality for mixing. The Sony's are much more comfortable. Nearly as good on audio quality.

Not what I hoped for.

By Sweetwater Customer on January 7, 2018

Open designs then to be tight in the bass but not artificially extended. There cans lack bottom octave focus. Everything else is done very well.

I wish it were better.
