Audio-Technica AT4041 Small-diaphragm Condenser Microphone Reviews
The AT4041 outperforms mics twice its price! Its warm, delicate, sweet sound makes recordings spring to life. It's ideal for drum overheads, acoustic guitar, piano, horns and under snares. This premium electret condenser microphone is engineered to meet the most critical acoustic requirements of professional recording, broadcast and live sound. The AT4041 cardioid studio condenser microphone features a smooth, extended frequency response with a slight rise in the high-frequency region and a transformerless output for very high SPL-handling capability. A unique combination of audio excellence and moderate cost, the AT4041 is a rugged microphone housed in a case of turned brass with black chrome plating for durability and low reflectivity. The element back plate holds a fixed charge and has been aged to provide energy stabilization. The surface of the back plate is precision milled to ensure maximum charge linearity, resulting in a reduction in both frequency response peaks and diaphragm break-up distortion.

Sounds Great!
Excellent product. Solidly built, reliable sound. Love how it makes my acoustic sing.

...this mic is amazing on just about any instrument. We use them at the production company I work at, and they"re tough as nails. A true "Swiss army knife" microphone.
Game Changer
I record in the niche market of Drum Corps/ Marching Band/ Winter Percussion. I have a stereo pair of 4041's that have completely blown me away with their rich sound, precise pattern, and toughness. The outdoors in the fall are a cold, wet place in the Pacific Northwest, but I've never seen a more resilient piece of hardware perform so delicately as the 4041's. They've truly given me the foundation to market myself with.
Best mic for the price. Period.
Honestly, this mic blows some of my $1,000+ mics out of the water on acoustic guitar. Vocals sound nice, but lack the body that you'd get from a quality LDC. I'd say if you're looking for a great mic for acoustic guitar, you've found your perfect match.
A great deal on a fantastic mic
I chose this mic because I work for an AT dealer, and had heard that it was generally well regarded, but hadn't heard any definite descriptions of it in a studio capacity. So I took a chance, and I couldn't be more pleased with the quality of these mics, and with AT mics in general. The sound is crisp and detailed but not harsh. The nuances of acoustic guitars come out beautifully. As an overhead, this mic really shines. The drums sound full bodied and detailed, and the snare has never sounded better for me. Of course there are much better mics out there, but in this price range, I can't imagine it getting better than this. I'm getting some of the best drum sounds I've ever gotten, even in the fairly crappy basement recording space that I have to work with. The downside is that they don't sell them in matched pairs, but the two that I purchased match up very well. You can't go wrong with this one!!!

I have a pair of the AT4041's and have used them for over 10 years. Not only do they sound great, they are tough as nails. Just as example, we were playing outdoors at a marina about 10 years ago when a torrential rain came and we quickly had to tear down. Unknown to me, one of my 4041's ended up getting dunked in a bucket of water...and stayed there *overnight*. I thought for sure that there was no way that mic would ever work again. I took it apart, washed all the parts in alcohol, let them dry thoroughly for a couple of days in the sun, put it back together again, and it sounds just as good today as the day I bought it. I use this mic exclusively as my drum overheads, so I can't honestly say how they perform in other applications, but for drum overheads, they are wonderful. If you want a reasonably priced small diaphragm condenser that sounds great, this one will get the job done very nicely.
