Hybrid Acoustic-electric Guitar with Mahogany Body, Spruce Top, Mahogany Neck, and Ebony Fingerboard - Natural

The Jazzmaster, George Fullerton and Leo Fender's unwitting surf and noise-rock icon, makes the perfect platform for Fender's third wave of Acoustasonic hybrid acoustic-electric instruments. Playing out on the weekends? The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster's bridge-position Acoustasonic Shawbucker magnetic pickup packs vine-ripened California cleans and the gnarliest garage rock tones this side of 1991, even without an amp in tow. But toggle positions and roll the Blend knob, and you'll unearth a slew of blissfully sweet acoustic voicings that are perfect for Sunday cafe gigs. The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster's audaciously offset spruce-on-mahogany SIRS body is built to resonate like an acoustic instrument without succumbing to the feedback issues of other stage acoustics. And yet, thanks to a Modern Deep "C" mahogany neck and thinline Jazzmaster body, this hybrid provides effortless electric-like playability up and down the fingerboard. The Acoustasonic Jazzmaster's bleeding-edge 3-pickup system — the Shawbucker humbucker plus a Fishman Matrix undersaddle system and a percussive body sensor pickup — will make you the envy of every Root, Costello, and Mascis in sight. Powering it all is a 20-hour rechargeable battery that supports simultaneous charge and play for nonstop music making wherever you play out.

Successful Hybrid of Acoustic and Electric! Can't Put It Down

By David S. from KAILUA, HI

Before my review -- Mahalo to Andrew Williams at Sweetwater for going out of his way to make sure I received a replacement guitar after the first one arrived damaged. He coordinated between Sweetwater tech support and Fender to expedite the arrival of my replacement guitar. He also answered a bunch of questions about the Acoustisonic to help me make my decision to buy. Mahalo Andrew!

I'm a gigging solo guitarist/singer. Before using the Acoustisonic at gigs I used Taylor acoustic guitars with LR Baggs Anthem pickup. I'm a reformed heavy strummer who plays lighter now, but still a "busy" rhythm player. I also loop and take solos and play some fingerstyle. With the Acoustisonic, I'm able to "plug and play" right into my existing acoustic pedal/PA rig.

Plugged in, the acoustic tones are authentic enough to pass the "eyes closed" test. The electric tones, both clean & driven, sound great too. The blend knob provides much flexibility to shape the sound between the A and B poles. 5 pickup selections, A/B settings for each with blend anywhere in between, there are many nice-sounding, different-sounding tone options at your fingertips.

I've played a handful of gigs with it, I'm still exploring. For go-to acoustic tone, I like the 3rd pickup position, blended more toward the "A" side (the "0" setting if it was a traditional volume/tone pot). It blends the "Rosewood Auditorium" setting with the body sensor pickup. It resembles the tone I'd get from the plugged-in Taylor w LR Baggs. (For reference, Fender considers the 1 position the farthest away from the soundhole, looks like it's in the 1 position in the picture above.. the 5 position is closest to soundhole.)

For looping and taking leads, depending on the song, I keep the pickup on 3rd position, or switch to 1st or 2nd position for more electric tones. Both 1 and 2 are nice depending on vibe/song.

In a band, the 4th position might be good. For my solo needs it lacks low-end, but probably sits great in full band mix.

Not a perfect 5 stars but the critiques are small. The balance is sometimes a little off -- harder strums or attacks are sometimes more exaggerated/stick out more on the Acoustisonic than they would have been on the Taylor. Also the high E string is a little quieter compared to all the rest when plugged in (maybe this can be adjusted).

I love the higher access and feel of the neck, and how it picks up more sounds than my acoustic but still sounds acoustic.. (e.g. sometimes I'll hammer/tap with my right hand just once to try and get an "accent" harmonic to come out... these almost never came through on my Taylor, they come through more now on the Acoustisonic).

They provide a long charging cable, surprisingly the older USB format (the one before USB-C). I charge it every weekend just to be safe, but I think they claim 20 hours of playing time when fully charged, so I don't need to do it so often. It's a great looking guitar that makes me want to pick it up and play all the time. The case is great too, except for the shoulder strap placement -- when worn on your shoulders the guitar sits high enough to bump into doorframes, ceiling fans, etc. Gig bag manufacturers -- please stop making gig bags this way!! Connect the strap to the case higher (about 12 inches from the top on the neck side of the case) so the guitar sits lower when you carry it on your shoulder. I own gig bags that are connected in this better way and it makes a HUGE difference.

Awesome guitar for a Solo Artist!

By Rick F. from Las Vegas, NV
Music Background: Acoustic Solo Artist

I am an Acoustic Solo Artist who has been playing professionally in Las Vegas Casino Lounges and Brew Pubs for the last 25 years. I perform a wide variety of genres using loopers and band looper pedals, so I was looking for something that had the versatility to handle all of the different styles of music from Rock to Country. The problem I was having was that almost all of my higher end acoustic guitars that I use gave off a low end feedback at times during my gigs in some of the smaller stage situations where I had to be closer to the PA speakers, even with using a Feedback Buster sound hole cover. Unfortunately, using a notch filter and pulling down the low end out of the EQ to control that issue diminished the clarity and fullness of the sound of the guitar. I would also get a mid-range quackiness tone when using any kind of distortion pedals for the rock tunes. After watching a bunch of videos and reading about the Fender American Acoustasonic Jazzmaster, I had to check it out. I went ahead and ordered one and had it professionally setup and Plekked by Sweetwater (excellent choice btw, I highly recommend it). When it arrived, I played it unplugged for a bit to get used to the feel of it. You can hear it fine, but it definitely is not designed to be played as an unplugged guitar. Maybe for just practicing around the house so as not to disturb anyone in the other room or something like that. But it just doesn't have the volume of a normal acoustic guitar, which I really wasn't expect it to anyway. When I plugged it directly into the PA with just a little reverb and delay, this guitar came alive! All of the acoustic voicings sounded great and very believable! I spent the next 3 days playing it through all of my tunes that I perform, with and without my loopers, and then some. I can honestly say that it performed perfectly! This guitar was just what I was looking for...AND no low end feedback or quackiness with the distortion pedals (I discovered that the Fender Smolder Acoustic OD pedal is a perfect pairing with this guitar)! All of the different acoustic voicing selections sounded clean and authentic giving you many different acoustic guitars to choose from and you can even blend them together, and the electric guitar voicings just add that little extra tone for the Country and Rock lead solos and intros, as well. I found that it was very comfortable to play for long periods of time with the thinner light-weight contoured body, the fretboard and neck are very smooth and fast with an electric guitar kinda feel, the action was just right and has acoustic light gauge strings (11's) giving it a tighter more acoustic guitar feel so bending isn't as easy as an actual electric Fender Jazzmaster but still better than a real acoustic guitar.

Overall, I am very surprised and pleased with this guitar! Fender did a great job designing it for the specific needs of a Live acoustic/electric player who plays a variety of genres (Solo and/or with a Band) and doesn't want to have to bring both an acoustic and electric guitar to the gig in order to get both sounds. Personally, I think the American Acoustasonic Jazzmaster version is a much better choice than the Player version and gives you several added voicings and better quality materials and build that the Player doesn't. I played both and I am definitely glad I paid the extra to buy the American model. However, if you don't have the budget for the American version, the Player version is still a nice choice for the money, too.

Although, the Fender American Acoustasonic Jazzmaster could never replace any of my high end acoustic or electric guitars and doesn't actually play, sound or feel like a real acoustic or electric, it sure does give me a very good and believable alternative for any Live performing situations. Thanks Fender for a great product, and thank you Dave Brow & Sweetwater!!

Surprising Feel and function

By Brian P. from Rhode Island
Music Background: Mostly Hobbyist - playing for 47 years.

As a hybrid instrument I was skeptical about this guitar because its mostly modeling wrapped into an instrument and being pretty old school, I figured I would try it and probably send it back. Well, that's not going to happen. Once I plugged it in and listened to the many acoustic sounds feeling quite authentic, I then realized how comfortable it is to play so acoustic and what is designed and feels like and electric guitar. Turns out it really brings out the creative juices in a different way than many of my other 20+ guitars. It's also so light and produces enough unplugged sound to be a great practice on the sofa instrument. A word on the build quality: For a $ guitar which I got on sale for 20% off, its Fender quality is standout. Set-up when it arrived and ready to play. Stays in tune beautifully and its great getting genuine acoustic sound but having the ability to play it as an electric with all the freedom for bend and notes in the higher registers. Finally, I mostly do home recording and it's great for laying down acoustic parts with this instrument. Depending on your needs, this is a great guitar to have in your collection!

Loved the Guitar until winter came

By Sweetwater Customer

Massive fret sprout when the weather turned cold. the wood was clearly not dried properly before constructions. Took several hours to get the frets back to playable. Luckily I didn't have to pay to have the work done but beware!!!

Amazing!

By Dawson G. from Fairbanks Alaska
Music Background: I’ve been a professional musician since I was 13 years old. I play bar gigs every weekend, and I record music in a professional studio.

I've had mine for a few days now and I am in love with it! The acoustic sound this guitar has is incredible and it even has a nice distortion tone at the brig pick up. This guitar is perfect for solo players who use loop pedals with there set up. The body pickup makes a great sounding beat that sounds like a cajon. I love the Jazzmaster body the best because it gave off the most resonance in my opinion. Fender really hit it out of the park with this one.
