Gus G Fire Blackouts

By Patrick from Warner Robins, Georgia on May 20, 2013 Music Background: Life long headbanger "long live metal"

I'm a life long metal player. I'm 50 now. Played Nugent in the early days, big hair metal in the 80's, grunge, nu metal etc..etc. Being a metal head my pickups have always been EMG's. Then Seymour Duncan Blackouts and now the Gus G system. I don't give high marks to a product just because I spent cash on it, I try to be realistic and unbiased. While EMGs and Blackouts sound different, both are awesome at what they do. So I have several guitars so equipped. A good mix, especially to A/B against. While I love the bottom end chunk from Blackouts and the screaming mids from my EMGs, I have to say to my ear at least these pickups are Duncans version of an EMG. A/B'd next to both an 81-85 set and an 81-60 set of EMGs their tone was nearly identical. I'm not disappointed that I bought them, just not blown away like I was when I heard the standard Blackouts. Installation is tedious and not for the unsure. Best let a pro install them if your not the patient type. If you have 2 guitars, get the standard Blackouts in one and EMGs in the other. I rated these really good for the innovation of a modular pre amp. Interesting.
