EVH Striped Series '78 Eruption Electric Guitar - Black/White Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Basswood Body, Maple Neck, Maple Fingerboard, 1 Humbucking Pickup, and Vintage-style Tremolo - Black/White

Edward Van Halen's iconic "Frankenstein" guitar went through many changes throughout its life, and the EVH Striped Series '78 captures it in one of its earliest incarnations. Before the red background. Before the Floyd Rose tremolo. Before the Seymour Duncan pickup. It features a basswood body patterned after the original's contoured slab of ash, along with a compound-radius fingerboard for modern playability, plus EVH-approved hardware and electronics. Beyond that, its relic'd striped finish and aged chrome hardware mimic what Edward's original axe probably looked like after it was tainted by the abuse of the road. This solidbody electric guitar is topped off with a '70s-style licensed Fender Strat headstock with a gold EVH logo, along with a skirted Strat-style volume knob. The Striped Series '78 is a must-have collectable for every EVH aficionado. What's more, it's a great-sounding, comfortable-playing instrument for guitarists of all stripes.

Took a while but I finally got it

By Kyle Wright from Alexandria, VA on November 9, 2022

Enjoying this guitar. I would say it's really not a "replica" but more of a tribute as it has some differences from the original guitar. This guitar is basswood not ash, as the original. It also has a truss wheel, unlike the original. That said, it sounds and plays great, especially through a 5150 amp. I've always wanted an evh but I hate Floyd's, so this guitar scratches that itch.

My only complaint is the lack of a case. At this price point, and with the basswood body, you want to protect your investment. At least you get a gig bag.

The neck is fast the way I like it. Well balanced. Light weight. Great combination of components from the low friction POT to the incredible sounding pup, brass trem block and nut and jumbo and frets makes this a hot rod of a guitar.

No trem arm spring included. Hand-rubbed satin urethane neck. Oil finished like the Frankie would of been most preferred but the hand-rubbed satin urethane is the next best thing. Can't believe it came with a gig bag.

It is a great looker and EVH tones are there. Do your research before buying.

Pros:
* Great EVH vibe. Great neck, both in carve, finish, but also in the beautiful relic job.
* Nice nitro paint job and smells of wood.
* The very first of the Superstrats
* Not difficult to ring EVH tone from this beast.

Cons:
* Do not buy this guitar believing it is specification correct to the guitar Eddie was using. There are enough youtube videos that talk about the differences.
* Tuning stability is not good. Even after following the video outlining how Eddie was able restring to keep the guitar mostly in tune, tuning stability is troubling. Someone of Eddie's incredible guitar proficiency was able to play a guitar of this design in tune most of the time and had tricks to return it to pitch following a dive bomb. If you value a guitar that stays in tune, give this some thought.
