La Bella 760FGS-B Deep Talkin' Bass Gold Flats Electric Bass Guitar Strings - .045-.128 5-string Reviews

.045-.128 Flatwound 5-string Bass Strings, Standard Tension

Add La Bella Deep Talkin' Bass Gold Flats to your electric bass guitar for amazing midrange punch. These hand-wound strings are created from a proprietary golden alloy that is softer to the touch than stainless steel and are hand-polished for one of the smoothest playing experiences you'll ever have. You'll notice the attack is slightly more prominent than with typical flatwound strings, making them a great choice for recording sessions. For huge, midrange-rich bass tone, exceptionally smooth feel, and long-term reliability, Sweetwater can highly recommend La Bella's Deep Talkin' Bass Gold Flats.

Uneven response, low output, QC issues?

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Professional bassist

I really, really wanted to like these. Cosmetics don't matter to me, but I loved the way they felt under my hands and acoustically when playing.
However, once plugged in, it was like having a G D and A from one set, an E from another, and a B string that will blast down walls with 10x the output of the other four strings. I've never experienced this with a set of strings. I reseated them, and tested other brands of strings to verify I wasn't crazy when hearing the differences in output to make sure it wasn't the bass. I let them sit, and I gave them three weeks to settle and play in, but they never came around. I can't gig or record with them. It was a bummer. The G D and A strings sounded great even with competitively lower output than most strings, but the E and B were useless.

Good strings for the price

By RTE

Nice flatwounds, very little pinch, feels smoother or softer than most. Haven't seen much tarnish after a month of owning but they do recommend rubbing alcohol and brasso, though I'm hesitant to use brasso. I guess I'll experiment when i start to see some tarnish.

I play with both a finger and a pick and I'm pretty rough with the strings but I'm not seeing much wear and tear. I worry that since it's a gold alloy that it'll be less durable but no evidence of that so far, I assume the alloy is lighter on gold than your standard jewelry but it does react with the oils in my fingers and leave a black mark on my fingers, though that wipes off easily.

They look phenomenal, if not a bit gaudy, but that's more of a personal aesthetic thing. I recently was diagnosed with metal allergies that limited my choice of strings and I ended up going with these.

Surprisingly good tone. Bottoms are smooth and it has a nice punchy midrange. I tend to lean on 300-600 hz to punch through a mic and these feel like they have a lot of character in that range. I tend to cut my higher frequencies but if I turn them up they've got more brightness than I usually hear from flatwounds, too.

The four string set was out of stock so I grabbed the five setbut found that the B string actually fit in my bridge saddle because it's tapered on that end of the string. I tried out using the bottom 4 of a 5 string in my 4 string but the other strings didn't sit in the saddles well and flanged a bit, but you could totally run a GDAB setup and buy yourself a few notes on the bottom end. A cheaper neck might buckle from the extra tension, though.

The only issue I have is that the G string is less smoothly wound and it has the gaps that you can sometimes feel with flatwounds and consequently the tone is a bit more tinny than I'd like, but that's really me reaching for a criticism here.

Highly Recommend

By Adam from San Diego

These things are incredible! Perfect for my old Warwick thumb bolt on. Rich sound. Great feel. They're kinda flawless. And they look amazing. I can complain about anything… except these strings.

Great strings!

By Don from Atlanta

They aren't quite as smooth as regular flat wounds but they are much brighter. My sound guy says he can hear me much better in the mix with the new strings.

Deep Talkin' Happy

By Jan D. from Cincinnati, OH
Music Background: Professional musician. Retired Music Educator, (Band, Orchestra, Jazz, General Music)

I bought a Michael Kelly fretless acoustic, but I wasn't happy with the standard issue strings, (D'Addario Round wounds). I love D'Addarios strings. I love round wounds, but the gauge just seemed a little too light for this instrument. I talked on the phone to the man that I'm going to call my new friend, Ian Haas, and he suggested these La Bella Deep Talkin' Bass Gold Flats, (.045-.105). Changed the entire character of my "Campfire Bass." It has a much more solid sound and greater depth of tone. I can dig in a little deeper without creating excessive buzz. improved the plugged in sound, too. Besides that, they look cool. I would never have known about these strings without the direction I got from Ian Haas. Thanks, man, for your knowledge, expertise and great service. Hope your boss reads this. You deserve the credit.

My favorite! But will not fit on fanned fret basses.

By Scott W. from Spring Hill, FL

These are my absolute favorite bass strings. So quiet when moving up and down the fretboard while playing. So smooth! However, after recently buying a fanned fret bass, I found that the B string was too short for a fanned fret.

My first strings

By Daniel from Michigan
Music Background: One month, new Rocksmith bass player.

I love the way these flat wound gold strings look. As for the sounds. As a noob, I can't compare the sound to any other steering, but I *CAN* say that the smooth surface is very easy in my tender fingertips while practicing slides. The original round-wound strings were very hard on my soft, noob fingertips.

Great tone but tarnished VERY quickly for me

By Dave from Western New York
Music Background: playing over 30 years

I've used round wound strings for years because of the piano-like sound they provide, but want to migrate to flats so the strings don't chew up my fretless fingerboard. These Gold Flats have great tone, and nice tight tension. Nice mid-frequency punch, the low B was clear and not muddy, and I was able to get some harmonics from them. They initially felt smooth but I experienced a tarnishing issue.

It might be my body chemistry, but these strings tarnished over the course of a 4-hour gig to the point where my skin was stained grayish green and it was difficult to remove (it was night so I didn't realize how bad it was until we were done playing). I had an outdoor gig the following afternoon so I cleaned them immediately prior to playing that gig. I followed the manufacturer's instructions and wiped the strings with alcohol wipes followed by brass cleaner (golly that stuff stinks!). But before the first set was over they had started to tarnish again. The manufacturer indicates that they might tarnish "over time", but I don't think this is the expected amount of time, so I'm thinking it might be my slightly acidic sweat or something.

I really wanted to be able to use these strings because I very much like the sound they gave me. But I don't have time to remove the strings from the bass, clean and reinstall them before every gig, only to end up with them tarnished again before the end of the gig. I surely don't want to be shaking hands with people with grayish green fingers.

If your hands sweat a lot when you play you might want to try strings with a different alloy. Hopefully your mileage will vary. If La Bella reformulates these or coats them (similar to Elixir brand strings) I'd be willing to give those a try, as the alloy on these Gold Flats really sounded good! But as it is...nope, sorry. Not for me.

Vintage Modern Bass Tone

By Dominique D. from Edmond's Washington
Music Background: Backing Artist

These strings are unmatchable!
Usually one would get a pack of stainless steel flat-wounds and realize that they sound dull like a three month old pair of jazzy round-wounds!

This is not the case with the La Bella Deep Talkin' 128.'s
La Bella's Deep Talkin' Gold Strings all starts with the mirror-like reflective aura of the 24k gold flat ribbon-winding providing a bright controlled brassy character. The luxurious silk texture is smooth to the touch while staying very engaging.

The world class stainless steel core keeps string tension peerless while overall action stays low and even with a tapered 128. B string

The exceptional tonal bandwidth can be shaped with ease starting with a silky midrange punch ending in piano-like over tones

Ideal fretted and fret less instruments.
