Best Guitar I own
The Custom Shop 1964 ES335 is really incredible. Fantastic workmanship and it's so comfortable with light weight, rolled edges and overall feel. Best sounding pickups I've heard from Gibson. Very very pleased.
Beautiful Instrument
I waffled for a month or so deciding if I should spend the extra $ to get the VOS; I'm glad I did. Is it worth it? For me, yes...but I also had some extra cash that probably would have ended up as lawn furniture or something else that I don't care about. Does it sound $ better than the regular 335, no...but this is one of those guitars that someone will be playing 40 years from now.
The quality of this guitar is outstanding, as it should be for this price. So enough bs, here's the deal. It won't replace my Les Paul or Tele, but I absolutely love playing this thing. It's the first guitar in the rack and I pick it up to noodle around all the time because I can hear decent tone (i.e., I can hear some of the texture) without plugging in. The ability to control the sound from the pots is excellent and the tones can be sweet or snarly--very versatile. I've played it through a bunch of amps and processors and it just sounds great no matter what it goes though (after tweaking the knobs a little). The fretboard took some getting used to since it's a little wider/thicker that my others, but I've found that it fits my knobby digits better than some of the others. Palm mutes are also a little different since you still get a lot of sound through the body (but that's like all semi and full hollowbodys).
If you're playing anything other than metal, it'll do it all very well. It doesn't handle really high gain like other guitars, but everything else is sweet. I've had it for 6 months and gigged with it several times and haven't had any problems with it what so ever. In fact, I haven't done anything but change the strings, IMO, it's as close to perfect as a guitar gets and it's always a conversation piece.
this is your guitar IF
if you have six grand that you don't want to spend on a decent used car or motorcycle, and you don't want to invest it or spend it on an awesome vacation, this is your guitar for sure. of course if you do buy it, you have to play it through a klon, into a dumble. you'll have to wear tan pants and a fedora, or people will know you are a pleb masquerading as a true artist. they'll be convinced that your other rig is a chinese LP fake into a boss HM-2 and a 10w gorilla.
not...that there's anything wrong with that.
ES 335 1964
The wood construction is very high quality. I was amazed at how well they made this guitar. The woods and the ruby color of the finish are excellent. Nylon nut now that's ridiculous! For the price it should be at least a quality bone nut. The saddles are also nylon. Gibson should provide brass saddles as well as nylon. I changed mine out and prefer brass. I also made a bone nut. The tuning machines are average and I find when I bend alot they go out of tune.I will be replacing those also. The fretboard and profile are very well done. The neck is not too thin. I wish they would of just made it like they did in 1964 instead spraying some aging substance on the entire guitar. The pickups sound very good and all in all it is a very good guitar and 10 years down the road will really be a great sounding instrument. I think for the money and they are not cheap, Gibson should provide the very best when making a guitar of this caliber.
