Analog Channel Strip with 610 Tube Microphone Preamp and 1176LN Compressor

The Universal Audio 6176 combines two pro audio legends — the 610 mic/line tube preamp and the 1176LN solid-state compressor/limiter — to create what may be the ultimate channel strip. The preamp section is packed with features, such as mic, line, and hi-Z inputs; two bands of shelving EQ; and a 15dB pad. The dynamics section maintains all the classic features found on the classic 1176LN. Each unit has dedicated ins and outs and can be used independently in Split mode or in series in Join mode via a front-panel switch. Handcrafted in Universal Audio's Scotts Valley, California labs, the 6176 offers weapons-grade build quality and colorful sonic character at an accessible price.

Best Channel Strip.

By Ananjan
Music Background: Music Producer

UAD 6176 is probably the most compulsory audio unit any studio must have. Even the 1:1 ratio in the 1176 gives that extra push to any sound that your recording. I am extremely happy to have this on board. Please watch the Unboxing Video.

Still the best studio channel if you want vintage warmth, thickness, and smoothness.

By Jon

You will eventually want to have two of these! I've used, bought, traded, and demo'd dozens of studio channel strips and this is still, by far, my absolute favorite one. I apologize for using words like "warmth" when describing audio - but I can't think of any other term that accurately captures what this box does. It makes things sound simultaneously sound smooth and bigger without sounding "forced" (no unwanted boomy clipping, or unwanted distortion). The 1176 compressor on this is better than any of the 1176 clones I've heard. Tons and tons of vintage vibe. It's a colorful compressor, so it will make any source sound more colorful. It can be used as a surgical studio channel to bring out gain and compress transients - however, it really does shine at adding vibe, color, and smoothness to any source. I have two of these so I can re-amp busses from my DAW. It can bring anything to life from the coldness of the DAW world. Yes - plug-ins now a days do incredible things, but an analog tube pre/DI + analog compression is unrivaled in the plug-in world. The 6176 was meant to bring back two classics in one package (610, and 1176) but it has become a classic itself. It took me a long time to get a second one because whenever they pop up either new or in the used market, they sell out fast. Alongside a 1073 channel, and a Distressor, the 6176 is an absolute requirement for any studio.

Fantastic Vocal and Guitar Channel Strip

By Charles from Houston, TX
Music Background: Professional

This makes everything you track sound better. Acoustic guitars sound warm and round, vocals sound full and huge! The 1176 is spectacular on snare hits and it's extremely configurable for outboard track printing. I prefer this unit over the UA plugins, especially when using extreme settings. The harmonics and fullness is everything you want from a tube channel strip.

Made All The Difference!

By Rich W. from Washington
Music Background: Recording artist (10 years)

From connecting my Hughes and Kettner Grandmeister 36 to my U87 and SM7B my recordings have never sounded better! After hours of research and recommendations from industry professionals, I decided to make the investment and I don't regret it for a second. It's difficult to put into words but imagine that you're looking for that, "Something" the smoothness that you hear from 6-7 figure studios that plugins just don't seem to achieve on their own. Add this to it and some well made adjustments and wouldn't you know it? That thing that was missing, the warmth, the clarity comes right to life thanks to this piece of hardware.
I hope you can experience one as well! They ARE worth the investment!
Soon I hope to be able to purchase another to add the same clarity to a stereo signal!

Overkill but DANG!

By Dennis B. from Holly Springs, NC
Music Background: Hobbiest

I say overkill b/c you can get as a home hobbyist the preamp and compressor from cheaper brands that do just about as good a job.

The main reason to get his is (pros)
1) Rugged for long-term pro studio use. Clones under $1k do have reliability issues, mostly seen when you ship them (bang them around)
2) Preamp EQ helps reduce decisions/choices in mix later.
3) Fast compressors aren't as easily heard, but necessary for spike control of bass/vocals and pair so well with an LA2A (or similar optical)
4) Equity, Equity, Equity.
5) Reasons to buy at Sweetwater are:
A) long term zero interest credit
B) Long term help if you have unit problems from Sweetwater support
C) New gear has no hidden problems and shipping is done in a very safe box (unlike Reverb/Ebay)
6) Bragging Rights to UA gear (there is always a 'feel good' factor to owning more famous gear, lets be honest about our pride
7) Compared to separate Preamp/EQ & 1176, this price is a good bargain.
8) Hardware (Preamp & Compressor) can be separated. I have mine patched to a front panel so I can hook them up however I want. Versatile routing is the point here!

CONS:
1) Expensive still tho
2) Overkill for Home Studio. Using Warm Audio -> Clark Tecknik -> BAE etc have beginning/Mid-level of similar pro sounds as clones or just warm preamps. Not perfect, but really good, depending on the tubes you use in them (if they use tubes)
3) UA's Customer Service has had periods of shoddy helps. Currently they have been good. Hope it stays that way. But there was a time I cannot forgive their lies and lack of helpfulness. Maybe time will heal, but I'll have to see a decade of good service to get past it.

My suggestions for "first gear" are not UA out of the box, no. Lots of levels inbetween Work up to this to appreciate it. It's more subtle in the compressor, but the preamp/EQ are noticeable, warm, and quite useful.

In terms of having Equity, I would sell this and prefer my Neve preamp, and am OK with high end clones of the LA2A or 1176, but a 610 preamp is cheap enough to afford for a mid-level hobbyist up. I mostly keep this as an 1176 pairing with the LA2A styled compressor and as a backup in case my other preamp needs servicing.

This all said, this is the real deal, the pricing is high but not outrageous, perfect if you want a vintage vibe or something warmer to a rather colder mic. I pair this with a U87ai and typically it's in a chain of a Neve->LA2A Clone->1176 or just the 6176->LA2A Clone.

So get a 2A styled compressor first before owning an 1176 IMO. You'll go WOW and then tame it with the 1176 so you don't blow peaks in your DAW.

Mind-blowing Vocals

By Esteban H. from Corpus Christi, TX
Music Background: Sound Engineer, Musician, Vocalist

I used this today for a recording in a good friend's home studio. EVERYONE was impressed with how the unit made the vocal sound so polished and "radio-ready" with ZERO mixing or EQing done ITB. Using the 610 as my pre-amp and pre-EQ and the 1176 for extra compression gave stellar results. I have never been so impressed with a piece of gear as I was just two hours ago, with that unit in front of me.

We all left with a very positive experience, thanks in large part to the quality of this piece of gear. It's pricey, yes - but worth every bit of change you can spare.

Fantastic Pre and Comp

By Ted L. from Kalamazoo Michigan
Music Background: Musician and Song Maker

I use this on almost every session. I especially have been impressed using this with an shure SM7B for female vocals. Similar results on male vocals too. The pre is really nice and the EQ although not surgical is very effective and adds (or removes) appropriate frequencies. The comp section is also very sweet whether tracking or mixing. I often time wish I had 2x when tracking, but I'll split and use the pre for vocals and comp on either bass or snare or kick. I've had it about 3 years and use it all the time.... I'd recommend it for someone looking for some natural vintage tube warmth along with high fidelity results.

6176 is awesome

By Garth B.
Music Background: Musician - Guitar/Violin/Mando/Vocals...

This is an essential piece of gear in my studio. I have two of these and use them all the time. I desire the big warm cozy sound. I use them on vocals, cab microphones, DI effects, Kick and Snare mics, and would feel a bit lost without them as they provide that big sound I love.

Sometimes I prefer a little cleaner warmth for vocals and in those cases I switch over to the Manley Core but I have a style that suits the sound the 6176 provides. They can make many pics sound great.

They do require a little maintenance from time to time but that's to be expected with a big tube channel strip.

Solid and Classic

By David from Las Vegas
Music Background: Sound Engineer, Professional Musician

I have owned one of these for nearly 10 years, purchased new from Sweetwater. The 610 has loads of tube smoothness but it also has an amazing clarity. The term hi if comes to mind. It is one of my main vocal pres. Used on the lead vocals for at least 20 CD's and demos from Irish folk music to metal. Jazz crooners to screamers. Great on wind and brass instruments and bass players regularly choose this box to plug into over many of my other pres.
The 1176 is one of the few compressors I like and trust to track with. I love mixing with it and adding it to just about any source that could benefit from compression. It definitely has its own signature sound that is always musical never clinical.
The 6176 is the perfect marriage of the 610 and the 1176 but you can also use them independently. Replaced the tubes twice since I owned it and never had any problems with it. Love tweaking the large knobs.
This is one piece of gear that will be in my will or I just might take it with me.

One Of The Best

By Bob M. from Rochester, New York
Music Background: Music producer/engineer/composer/talent

The best endorsement for a piece of gear is in the track! The UA 6176 was the vocal channel for this
young talented "Unsigned Only" finalist for her song "Found". The presence, the detail... it is a must for the big sessions I do!!

Zeke loves 6176

By Zeke from Houston TX
Music Background: Studio Dude

I am positive that this thing was made in heaven at God's house and brought down to earth as a gift. No other explanation for why this thing sounds as amazing as it does.
Much like my 737, this thing will make any mic sound 1000 times better, hell anything you plug into this thing will sound amazing.

Pros= easy to use, Great sounds, increase quality of anything you plug through it, fast compressor
Cons= I can see none at all.

Go buy it before the world ends and you die with regrets of not buying this amazing piece of machine. :)

Better Than I Expected

By Michael from Rego Park, NY

Not long ago I went to a UA seminar at a local music store, I recently acquired a UAD2 card and was curious about the company. Two reps demoed the UA hardware and I was immediately hooked. They asked me about my studio, what I was using. When I told them they were ok with all my gear but my front end. Apparently that was my weakest link. Anyway, I was lucky to have the gear that I was using so I didn't jump into it immediately. I have made records with far less so I knew much of the sound depend on the engineering and mixing skills. So I worked my setup and hoped that one day I'd be worthy of a new front end. As I got better the importance of the front end became more apparent. Needless to say I had expectations of the 6176. Well, I was blown away by it the UA6176 is better than what I was expecting. Anything I put through it vocals, guitar, bass, sounds great. I couldn't be happier, I highly recommend it.

Great Gear even better service

By michael g. from Farmington, NH
Music Background: Producer, Recording Engineer, Pro Musician

I'm still learning how to use this but so far it sounds great on vocals. This is my first order with Sweetwater and will definitely be doing more business with them. The product arrived in 2 days with free shipping and my sales rep Chris was great in answering questions on how i can integrate this in my current system. I can't say enough about the customer service except it's top notch in my opinion.

Warming up the UA Apollo interface

By Clinton from Tulsa, OK
Music Background: Musician... Recording engineer

My studio has 30 years worth of gear trying to recapture some of the analog perfection of recording sessions past. The UA Apollo interface's pre amps I am using to front end my Pro Tools are very clean and uncolored but not exactly what I was looking for in my vocalists tracks. The UA 6176 is now pre amping the non pre amp inputs of the UA Apollo. With a bit of compression from the UA 1176LN side of the UA 6176 the vocal tracks have a timeless character and natural punch to them. Needless to say I am content with this unit and will be adding a second unit as soon as the studio budget allows (these things aint cheap).

UA's Swiss Army Knife!

By Paul B. from Losa Angeles, CA
Music Background: Film Music Executive and Producer

i bought a dual channel UA 610 pre-amp unit from you in 2008 and fell in love with the sound, the depth, the quality it added to every recording. And the 1176 is a must have in any studio. This unit gives me both.

THE channel strip for vocals!

By Michael K. from Johnson City, TN USA
Music Background: Project studio owner, singer-songwriter

I'm using this primarly for vocals and after one day worth of tracking I am completely bowled over by how much better everything sounds. Things sit perfectly in the mix with little in the way of after-the-fact tweaking. I've previously used both digital and tube preamps and compressors, including the 6176's "little brother," the LA-610. I can't believe I waited this long...should've sprung for this years ago! GREAT piece of gear and worth every penny, even if it is pricey. Thanks for the 12 months financing, Sweetwater! If you're tracking vocals in your home/project studio, you will not find a better mic preamp/compressor in this price range.

Awesome Channel Strip

By Ted from Kalamazoo, MI
Music Background: Live Sound Engineer, Project Studio Musician and songwriter.

I've only had this unit about 2 weeks now, but I LOVE it. I considered many other strips, but went for this based on legacy reputation and experience in pro studios in the past with UA gear. I am using this in my project studio, and planned to use primarily for voice. I have a BLUE baby bottle and immediately this strip made the mic come to life. The controls are very basic, but very useful and effective. For a clean tone I found their set-up instructions to be very useful. The pre just sounds amazing, open, warm and detailed, and it seriously made my mic sound amazing.... The compressor setting was very intuitive and I found watching the amount of compression was helpful to achieving settings from tone only (minimal) to slamming (I will certainly be using this for a room drum feed). I also have now used it as a direct/DI for my bass, and it equally shines there. My only complaint is how you can't leave multiple lines connected, but it's worth the tone this thing is giving. Pertaining to my recording and writing process...........one word: Inspirational

I found "that" sound!

By Carl M. from Hagerstown, MD
Music Background: Recording Engineer, Musician

I have a small project studio, with an equally small budget. Like most engineers, I have been searching for "that" sound. You know that sound that you can almost acheive with plug-ins, but something is still missing. That ended when my 6176 arrived! I put up a nice tube mic, and plugged it into the 6176 and engage the compressor and viola', there it was! I hadn't even adjusted mic placement yet and it sounded great! I have since used it on drums, guitar, bass, and vocals, all with excellent results. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that UA says not to connect the line, mic, and/or hi-z inputs at the same time. Surprising considering that switch on the front panel must be in the correct position to get signal from a respective input. It's a bit of a pain to repatch each time I change from mic to line for instance. The final sound is worth it!

This is the best period...

By Tim C. from Boston,MA

This unit is the best sounding for vocals, acoustic guitars and drums...However when it comes to bass I would prefer a less gooey sound-But in terms of an all around warm sounding all in one unit this it...Period.

I like it

By wb from Kanzaz
Music Background: Record for fun if we have beer

A nice strip. The compressor is smooth and adds a unique sound. The pre is versatile and the added eq is a nice touch. However, I didn’t have an opportunity to try out other strips or pieces in this price range and I’ll always wonder… would I have liked the Avalon Vt-737 better, or a Great River pre and a Purple Audio MC77, or a Portico 5015, Distressor, etc.

Nice channel strip

By Dave from WA
Music Background: musician, budding recording/mixing engineer, self producer.

I bought my 6176 mainly for the 1176 (I bought the unit for less than what a new 1176LN costs). The 1176 sounds just like a reissue 1176LN to my ears. I was suprised by how nice the pre sounds on vocals, bass, mic'd amps and acoustic guitar. The stripped down EQ is actually quite musical althought I wish there were a few more frequencies on the shelving. This is a versatile unit being able to link and use both pre/comp together or split and use each seperately.

I don't have to tell you about the 1176, it rocks!

September 27, 2006

Highly Recommend

By Chris P. from Pasadena, CA
Music Background: Composer, Instrumentalist

Great piece of gear. Two classics -- the 610 pre and 1176 comp -- which you can use together or separately. Both have distinctive sonic character. I use it on every track-and-mix I do. Of particular note: It sounds tremendous on DI'ed bass.
