Solid State Logic 611EQ 500 Series Parametric Equalizer Reviews

500 Series Mono 4-band Parametric Equalizer Module with Dual-mode Design

Put legendary console equalization in your rack with the SSL 611EQ 500 Series 4-band EQ module. In fact, you actually get two legendary EQs in the 611EQ. Early ’80s SSL E Series consoles had the “Brown Knob” EQ, and later consoles used the “Black Knob” EQ, each with distinct sonic characteristics. The 611EQ lets you switch the midrange bands between these two flavors of EQ, so you’ll be equipped to shape any material to your liking. Add a preamp module and a dynamics processor, and you’ve got a superb custom SSL channel strip. Sweetwater’s advice: for an EQ you can rely on for virtually any task, look to the SSL 611EQ 500 Series EQ module.

SSL 611EQ Review

By William Burns from Lancaster, PA USA on January 11, 2024 Music Background: Producer, Engineer, Designer, Musician.

Excellent product and effective on any track... like you'd expect anything less from SSL. After using their Plugins and others for years, the low end can be more controlled with this 500 series, than the plugins, which are especially good for high end sounds. Bottom line, SSL is a brand you can trust without exception, and this product is no different. Use it to better your tracks, use it in sound development, and you're results will not be second rate. Highly recommended.

I just had to write something, this Eq is amazing. I will be purchasing another one very soon.

Incredibly versitile with the unmistakable SSL sound

By Tim from Los Angeles on March 8, 2021 Music Background: Recording and Mix Engineer

What a great EQ - I've been amazed at its versatility and ease of use. I can sweeten elements quickly and easily in "brown knob" mode or get aggressive in "black knob" mode with tons of low end and bite. It's ridiculous how much boost you can add while retains clarity. And if you couple this with the SSL E-series dynamics module, you've got one hell of a strip (especially for shaping drum tones). From clean to mean, this EQ should definitely be in your toolbox!

500 611E series modules sound as good as xrack Modules and or an SSL console

By Lee from Hamtramck, Michigan on March 9, 2023 Music Background: Song writer, producer, current Berklee online student

I am responding to another review but still plan to purchase this unit cause I can't find any discontinued xrack modules. I want to have a stereo pair of the E series EQ And compressor or tracking vocals guitars keyboards and also for going across sub mix busses and even across the master mix bus.
It is to my understanding that SSL was bought out in 2017 by another company named Audiotonix who may have cut some corners to shave off the manufacturing cost of the 500 series SSL modules. I am also on the fence about buying the SSL fusion unit due to this same reason. But the sonics of the 611 e series modules are still top notch

The sound is excellent! The build, well...

I was very excited to add this EQ to my Lunchbox; while software simulations are getting very good, they still don't sound (at least to my ears) as-good-as hardware. The arrival of this unit coincided with a mix that I was working on and the project presented a perfect opportunity to try out the SSL EQ.

First, I tried the EQ on a less than flattering kick drum. Using other EQs, compressors, etc... I was able to get the sound pretty close, but it still wasn't meeting my goal. With the arrival of the SSL EQ, I started over from the original, unprocessed track and rebuilt the kick sound. When I began using the SSL EQ, I was immediately impressed with the ease at which I was able to shape the kick sound. Plenty of bottom end without mud, and nice definition in the top end to really highlight the kick. I was able to do this without engaging the "black" button which also was a bit of a welcome surprise.

My next test was on a rhythm guitar that was a little dull. This one was even easier to clean up than the kick sound and once again, I didn't have to use the "black" button; although, I really didn't expect that I would need it.

I also used it on a bass guitar, just to see what it could do. Once again, I was able to achieve a nice sound but I had already achieve an excellent sound using other gear; so, this afforded me the opportunity to A/B the bass sound. Both were very good and would be more than acceptable in the final mix. I was able to get a bit more aggressive sound with the SSL EQ but the song didn't necessarily call for that particular sound, so I left the bass track alone.

So, why not 5 stars???

I want to be very clear that it wasn't due to the sonic characteristics of unit, but rather the build quality. The first thing I noticed when I unboxed the unit, was the open circuit board. All my other Lunchbox modules are contained within a protective metal box. I also noticed that the connections from the unit to the Chassis are on a "hat" that really doesn't look all that durable. The third item I noticed, was the "cheap" feel of the various knobs and buttons on the unit. SSL has a great name in the recording industry and it is too bad they didn't spend a bit more time (and money) to address these items.

All-in-all, I would say this is a definite "must have" for any Lunchbox, unless you already are working on an SSL console. I would recommend this item but would also warn the user to be extra careful during installation, due to the exposed circuit board and the connection "hat."

Sonically, it sounds great!
