Electro-Harmonix 5MM 2.5-watt Guitar Amplifier Pedal Reviews

Single-Channel 2.5W Power Amp with Brightness Switch and Single Volume Knob

For decades, low-wattage amps have been the secret weapon in many recording engineers’ arsenals for achieving rich and creamy clean tones and focused drive and saturation. And now, EHX has packaged the low-wattage format into the pocket-sized 5MM, a 2.5-watt power amp that can connect directly to any 8- or 16-ohm speaker. Deceptively simple, the 5MM is equipped with just two controls — volume knob and brightness switch — that can alter your signal dramatically, from a touch of grit to full-on crunch bright enough to rip through any mix. This tiny, tone monster performs admirably outside of the studio, too, especially in small venue settings where you want to crank the distortion without blowing out the audience’s ears. And guitarists at Sweetwater are extremely impressed by how well the 5MM takes effects, offering nearly limitless tone-shaping possibilities from a shockingly affordable and portable device.

EHX hits one out of the park. This is that one.

Great little I'm pedal and surprisingly loud for 2.5 watts

By Jim Nava from Encinitas,Ca on March 27, 2023

I use this pedal so I can use my spark 40 amp with my 2x12 cab and it sounds awesome for home practice.

Amp in a pedal

By Gcorbs from CT on November 26, 2021 Music Background: Former gig player

This baby rivals my tube amps! Starts off clean with head room then becomes crunchy at 9 o'clock….. and loud! I use a 5 watt power attenuator with it.
Normal is dark, but not overly so…..bright adds some bite and gain.
Bought for at home practice, but I believe this can be used for band practice or a small gig.
70s gain in the neighborhood of KIZZ or Thin Lizzy for 70 bucks!

Perfect size

By Sweetwater Customer on July 30, 2020

This is a loud little amp, perfect size for my practice room, I don't have to keep my 100w amp head on the lowest possible volume.. still can only use this at 1/4 to 1/2 volume, I didn't think 2.5w was that loud. Sounds good with my pedals and effx board. Fits right on the pedalboard.. Happy.

Works great with multi effects pedal preamp simulation

By Daniel on June 8, 2020 Music Background: Surf Rock Guitarist

I bought this pedal to hook up my Firehawk FX directly to my Princeton's speaker and simulate using other amplifiers with my it. It works great since it lets me bypass the preamp on the Princeton and I can get more true to life amp simulations and is plenty loud. I tend to use normal mode the most since the Jensen C10R speaker is already really bright but overall, I'm very pleased with this power amp.

nice sound very small foot print

I needed small amp to power a second speaker for a clean sound, this amp was cheaper then a replacement transformer for my old amp. It sounds pretty good real quite.

2.5 Watts Of Excellent Tone

By Ross K from East Texas on December 8, 2019 Music Background: Electric guitar..Violin many years ago

As stated in my title this Electro Harmonix 5mm pedal has tube like tone and feel. I did run it by itself for just a moment before I plugged into a Metal Muff into a Holy Grail Neo reverb pedal into the 5mm and it sounds amazing..putting the Metal Muffs distortion knob at 3pm and the volume full on turning the 5mm's volume to about 9am the sound comes on and it gets loud quick.
The single notes are round and juicy and chords retain their clarity and have a lot of punch, during palm muting it doesn't get muddy and pushes the single 12" Celestion G12T-75 hard and not flubby, lots of punch and growl.

I did try another distortion pedal,a Modtone High Gainer in place of the Metal Muff and the results were close to what I described with the Metal Muff..switching to my stock EVH 2-12" speaker cabinet with and running the 2 distortion pedals with the same settings I was able to crank the volume to about halfway and I was surprised at how this 2.5 watt pedal really pushed the speakers for maximum tone and the feel of the strings is very lively..just sweet sounding.

I mainly play higher gain distortion so I don't really have much to say about just using the pedal by itself but for a brief moment before I kicked on the distortion pedals the volume and sound was nice and clean..

I can recommend this pedal if needing a pedal board rig to play at home or carry it around with you,it has a good amount of volume, even for just 2.5 watts.

To finish off here I couldn't get this gear without the help on my sales rep Shaka Dhladhla ext #1667..I have been with Shaka as my sales rep for 2+ years now and he is an awesome person to deal with..he is up to date with lots of good info on the gear I need and always follows up with my purchase(s) and makes sure that I am happy with my new gear and if any problems ever arise to let him know and he will take care of anything quick and professionally, and I can't ask for a better person to deal with !

Perfect for low volume home use.

By Brandon T on November 30, 2021

I initially picked up only the 44 magnum for use with a pod go at home and live. the 44 magnum is LOUD, this 5mm was perfect for home-usage. It can also get very loud but also provides what I was looking for when it comes to reasonable home volume levels coming out of my cab to keep the neighbors happy. If anything super-quiet bedroom levels might still be unachievable with my v30 1x12 even but that is not something I require, something to be aware of.

Exceeded Expectations

By Sweetwater Customer on November 25, 2019

Looking to move a pedalboard-only rig. I accomplished this by having a modeling pedal right before this pedal in my signal chain. It did JUST what I wanted it to do, and get's quite a bit louder than I anticipated. For home use, I don't need to exceed 9/10 o'clock to get the volume required. I don't gig often, but would assume this could be used for small gigs with no problem. This is best suited for someone trying to get good sound at home without having to deal with the volume issues of a tube amp.
