Great EQ

By Nic on October 10, 2023

This EQ is one of my favs. My favorite is really the mid band. Don't get me wrong, the lows are fat and the highs are so delicate and delightful, but the mids give you so much to work with. This is an EQ that is perfect for tracking just about anything and on the mix can be used everywhere without stacking on frequencies.

Modern Neve Sound

By Sweetwater Customer from NH on March 29, 2023

Just the right amount of vibe. Not as gooey as the 1073, but just as righteous.

This thing....

By Jeff from Virginia on November 25, 2022

I've had mine for about six months. I have a few other eqs, but this one excels making whatever track it's assigned to special. I have been using this on vocals a lot. I often mult, so I feel like I want another maybe I'll even try them on the 2 bus for fun. The low end section is heavenly whether boosting or cutting, or both. You can really do what you need to do to the low end with this. The mid section is powerful for cleaning out some muck perhaps a needed boost. Several options with the high section, but I like the 16k shelf the best. It's gentle at first, but can really add some nice air if you twist the knob to about 3:00.

This is not one of those eqs that you have to twist the knob a lot to hear what it's doing and sometimes leaves you wanting for more. You always hear what this is doing and it will give you plenty in whichever direction you want to go. Highly recommend.

Good overall sound

By Sweetwater Customer on March 24, 2022 Music Background: Musician, Songwriter, Audio student and enthusiast

This was a great surprise as I wasn't sure of only getting a 3 band eq, but I loved my Neve compressors so I felt that this could be a good choice
seeing that I wanted an analog unit. What I like about this eq is that it has a great sound by itself. The high pass and low pass controls are excellent very rich and warm and the only other thing is to dial in what sort of mid you want to increase or decrease. Overall though the sound is very good, rich, and warm. Glad that I have this.

Is 6 stars an option?

By Matt from Idaho on January 20, 2022 Music Background: 30 plus years of making music

Incredible. Absolutely freaking incredible. I've been using older Neve style EQs as my "go to" for well over a decade (both hardware clones and plugins). I love using them for tracking, mixing, and even mastering. It's a given that they are fantastic for "sweetening", adding "weight" or giving the top end some "air" - BUT they are also great for more detailed work.

I have a handful of other RND gear and it is all fantastic so I jumped at the chance to pick up a pair of these when I had some space open up in my rack (and my budget). DANG these are great. They are everything I love about Neve EQ but better. So sweet. So smooth. So rich. These outperform any neve style EQ I've ever used. Sweeter/softer in the mids and highs. Warm low end without getting flabby. Great clarity.

I'll be back for more!

Wow

By Jed Wunderli from Cottonwood Heights, UT on January 13, 2022

I haven't used this a lot but I have run a mix through them (I got two) and it sounded GREAT. The 551 allows you make big changes or small ones that also add just what's needed. Music has a presence after being touched by this. I love it and I'll be using them both for tracking and mixing.

It Really is That Good.

By Josh from Seattle on November 20, 2021

I don't have words to add that haven't been said. I lack the proper vocabulary to really describe what this is unit is capable of. Crucially, this already world-class unit has a bypass. A/B comparisons are important to my process.

ANYTHING RUPERT IS A GREAT THING

I love the sound of this EQ. I use it with heavy hands, Like extreme settings. Big boost and cuts. No fear. Because no matter how you use this thing. It will sound great. It's only going to set you back...but what the hell is...doing sitting in your bank account anyways. Go buy the thing.

Best 500 series EQ

By Mouttet from Miami on July 15, 2021 Music Background: Producer/Engineer/Musician

This is the most powerful EQ in my studio.
I'm using it Via Shelford Channel strip but man let me tell you this beast is a powerful tool. You can run anything through it, sculpt and accurately shape sound. I've demoed almost every 500 series EQ this tops them all.

Awesome EQ

By Tortilla Man from Earth on October 12, 2020 Music Background: Always learning

Rupert Neve said: The EQ is only for correction.

Keeping those words or wisdom in mind, I try to be subtle with this EQ and only boost slightly here and there on certain frequencies of certain instruments. The only instrument I ever cut the mids on is harmonica to keep it from sounding harsh.
I put this EQ at the end of the channel strip, after the compressor. The only time I put it before the compressor is when I'm working with lows end stuff like kick drum or electric bass.

Whatever fancy, internal circuitry is in this module, I'm sure you'll be happy with the end result.

Using on Shelford

By Sweetwater Customer on October 2, 2020

Currently using this on the Shelford and it is absolutely incredible!

Excellent...def getting a second one.

By Clay from Philly on June 26, 2019 Music Background: Pro

I was looking for a versatile EQ to use for tracking and mixing. I favor vibe and personality with hardware gear. The 551 just sounds excellent overall. It manages to be colored in some ways and transparent in others. It has an overall hifi quality and the boost cuts are very smooth. I guess that's what it is, smooth but powerful filters combined with high quality transformers. It always sounds musical and pleasing. Instead of searching for one good sound you're searching through multiple good tones and choosing the one you dig the most. It's very easy to dial in and move on with your session. I'm definitely getting a second module for a stereo pair.

Amazing EQ

By Charles from Los Angeles on April 17, 2019 Music Background: Producer/Engineer

If you at looking to get out of the box and add sweet goodness to your mix or eq on the way in, this will do it and do it extremely well. This is not a surgical eq, if you are looking for that stick to plugins. The 551 works equally well for tracking and mixing. Correct mic placement and a bit of eq sound amazing in the way in. During mixing, very fine adjustment make a world of difference. I find with plugin eqs you have to push a little more to make things happen. This just does things perfectly with small moves. I picked up two and could see my myself easily doing two more In the future.

Josh at Sweetwater provided great input as I was debating whether or not to take the plunge. Glad I did!!!!

nice all the way around

By rilen13 on March 4, 2019 Music Background: recording and composing for over 30 years now

I was a little leery about this module before I purchased it. All the ratings were great. All I can say is wow , I ended up picking up another one. I run everything I can through them, on the input chain and stereo out chain. Spot on presets and super easy to use. I really like what it does with the low end as well, gave my Moog a unique texture. I would say buy one or two.

Incredible

By Sweetwater Customer from Michigan on February 25, 2019

I have been using my 551 for a little over a year now, and I absolutely love this thing. It's super easy to dial in the tone that you are looking for. Just another world class unit as usual!

A Real EQ

By Studio Toys from GA on September 26, 2018

Just turning it on adds a little richness to the sound. All I have needed to do so far is to barely turn the gain knob to get where I needed to be without degrading the sound. If you are looking for extreme tone shaping then you got that all day with this puppy. The unit has some weight to it and the knobs feel solid. It appears to be very well made.

Tone and Weight

By Will Ballesteros from Santa Maria, CA on August 22, 2018 Music Background: Mixing Engineer

My first Neve purchase, and I could not be happier with this tone shaping eq.

We don't want to say it, but often times our mixing sources come in a little lacking. Or you are in a session and you are just looking for something to give you a vibe. This is that eq that can make any source, and yes I mean any source, sound good.

Guitars sound epic (my favorite so far). Vocals have presence, and density. The low end is the "right" punchy low end - no flab. The high pass filter is the nice touch with a little resonant bump. There are only two options for highs, and while I wish I had more options, it can add a nice air.

This is a very expensive sounding eq, and a pair should be in everybody's lunchbox.

The best EQ available today

By Rogers Nelson, P on April 4, 2018 Music Background: Engineer

I spent the last 16 months trying out every EQ I could get my hands on. This search was not limited to 500 series modules (in fact 500 series modules were last on my list), this includes rack mount EQs, plug-ins, UAD accelerated stuff, EQ's in channel strips, and even certain filters in synthesizers that covered similar ground (also both plug-ins and hardware). I initially discovered these circuits in the Shelford Channel and that's where I fell in love. If you are coming from the Shelford Channel (or considering this or the other) - know that although the sound is nearly identical, they behave a little differently. The EQ section of the Shelford Channel operates at a higher voltage and also has dented attenuators. The frequency selection is also slightly different. Regardless, to my ears - both the Shelford Channel EQ and the 551 sound exactly the same. Technically, the Shelford Channel EQ will give you more headroom but that's a marginal difference.

If you are looking for an EQ to legitimately enhance your sources (either in tracking, or mixing - I use these for both), look no further. There are other EQ's out there that sound good, but feel limited. They do not have a lot of sweet spots, and the enhancement is subtle. The 551 has sweet spots EVERYWHERE. I was shocked at how amazing this is. Yes, the API 550's will bring things forward and give your sources more bite and grit. Yes, the Pultec tube boosting will fill up the room, and enhancement the dynamics. Yes, the Manley does both of those things. Yes, the Avalon mastering EQ will sweeten everything up.

Here is the thing. This little beast does all of those things. It does not just fit into one category. I found that it covers all of those bases, and more. Yes, it can be used surgically. Mostly, I find myself using it to boost all of my sources. Want that Pultec punch? Use the HPF while also boosting the low band. Boom! Punch. Want to bring a vocal or guitar forward in the mix? Boost the mids to 2 o-clock. Want to make your instruments sizzle but not sound harsh or brittle? Boost that high end. Even at the extreme settings, there is no harshness or shrill tones. I am absolutely floored by this. Even just adding 1-5% on each band will give your sources that sought after Neve 1073 console girth. I cannot stress enough how amazing this is.

I bought eight of these and use them on everything. I track through them. I mix through them. My ultimate secret weapon. I also use all 8 of my 551s while summing my mixes and stems. At this price, it's a bargain. You are getting the sound of a Neve console for pennies on the dollar.

Stunning.

By Tanner Martinez from Temecula, CA on March 20, 2018 Music Background: Audio Engineer

This EQ is very impressive. The HF"s, MF"s, and LF"s are very flexible and easy to tune in the exact sound you are looking for. The HF"s are very smooth and sibilance is never an issue. I added this to my 500 series vocal chain after my Neve 511. It makes my vocals sound like a million bucks. You won"t be upset, just buy it and see for yourself.

Sonic heaven in spades!

By Jerry from Midwest on October 26, 2017 Music Background: Recording since 1969

I began my recording career back in the summer of 1969 and spent many, many hours using inductor eq,s back in the day. This amazing RND 551 is nothing but stunning. Sounds like a million bucks, and lets you add that high end finishing touch to the track or strap a pair on any buss and life is great.
I'm addicted to the sound of these and I'm sure you will be too!

Excellent EQ

By Snow from CA on September 9, 2017

I utilized this EQ on both vocals and guitar; Beefs up the low-mid range beautifully and assists with controlling the highs. I would definitely recommend this 500 unit.

Absolutely Perfecto! Bravo!

By Ryan Mowdy from Oklahoma City, OK on August 21, 2017 Music Background: lots o' stuff

Yeah this is a really intuitive EQ for sure. Its very quick and easy to really dial in what you're looking for....and for me when I EQ, I do it on an intuitive basis and I don't really apply much else to it - just adjusting the knobs so to speak. I am using two for stereo/dual mono mixing, mainly using these 551's with my vocal tracks and they have usually triple part harmonies. I cannot stress the easy and quick adjusting that needs to be done to get a wide variety of highs, mids and lows. Lets say you have three vocal tracks and each needs to be EQ'd in a unique way not the same - well like I said its just as easy as turning a knob - no complicated audio engineering skills needed here. Not much else to say other than I highly recommend not just one but two of these great EQ's for your studio.

Great eq

By Alex on December 6, 2016 Music Background: Guitarrist, home studio owner, amateur audio engineer.

I am a newbie into serie 500 stuff, so i am getting modules to make a one channel device. I started with the dbx 520 and 560A, to use it with vocals and instruments. Then, i got the bbe sonic maximizer, to make my sounds come to life (i first knew the bbe with my guitar, and i love it!). The Radial extc came to me, to add the sound of my several guitar effects into my tracks. The next buy was this eq .... i know it is a three band eq and it is expensive, but i wanted to have an eq with its personality, which can bring to life my tracks, an eq with no harshness on high trebble settings, etc ...... well, this eq can achieve it! I am not a studio owner and also an audio engineer, i am a guitarrist who loves to record his band with the best sound possible. I always knew that this 551 would never dissapoint me, so i went for it, now i am happier than a dog with two tails!

The Best

By Joe Winner from FL on November 17, 2016

I use this for vo and wow. Just plugging it into the signal chain makes the voice sound better. The inductors give the 551 a very 'Pultec' type of feel with broad strokes rather than precision eq'ing. If your vocal chain already sounds good, but you're looking for amazing, get the Neve 551.

Rupert Neve 551

By Richie on November 1, 2016

Sounds super sweet and amazing!!!! I've got this baby following a 511 pre and feeding various tube compressors and I can't get enough of it. It's a very colorful piece, so don't buy if you don't want an eq that will impart its own character into your mix. For the rest of us, once you hear how material sounds going through it, a second one will make the wish list. Probably won't take you too long to dial in "that sound" with this puppy. Vocals are sounding soooo lush no matter if it's paired with my hardware compressors or Plug-ins of choice. Have also gotten killer Kick, Snare, and Bass results. By it, you'll want to use it everywhere too!

EXCELLENT

By Ed from Earth on August 9, 2016 Music Background: Always Learning

Great clarity on the highs. Great low end power. Great mids with lots of versatility. Great vintage warmth and saturation. It's an all-around studio quality EQ.

I almost wen with the Great River EQ for less $. It had more tone-shaping capability than the Neve but I really wanted the warm vintage saturation of a classic console. I picked up a pair of these EQ's and it was a big investment for a hobbyist like myself but well worth the money.

Surgical, magic

By Andy Mendoza from Puerto Rico on November 24, 2015 Music Background: Recording Engineer, Grammy voting member

Very intuitive eq. So simple to operate. So versatil. Anything from vocals, to a room, it pics up just what you want, how you want. Does not dissapoint. Well.......it is Neve after all.

Great eq

By Ben from North Hollywood ca on April 20, 2015 Music Background: Profesional engineer / producer

Do you a want vibey, tonal, super useful eq in you 500 series rack? Look no further. This eq is the king. Haven't found something it doesn't work well for.

I will say, it's not really a fixer eq. It can work with some mid buildup, but overall this is not a triage eq. The top end is amazing, smoothest highs and a ton of versatility from the shelf and peak options. The bottom is huge but tight, and the mid range can add clarity and focus to anything (I especially love it on guitars).

They really knocked it out of the park with this piece. I absolutely love this EQ. Truly sounds amazing. So far I've used it to track vocals and it's just made them sound bigger, thicker, smoother, or even airy but not harsh. IMO, a no-brainier addition to your lunchbox rig.
