dbx 530 500 Series Parametric Equalizer Reviews

500 Series 3-band Parametric Equalizer, with Switchable Peak/Shelf Curves for Low and High Bands, and Infinite Notch Mode for Extreme Attenuation

Put the dbx 530 parametric EQ in your 500 series rack and you'll soon find yourself using it on every project, and possibly every track. You have full parametric control over three bands, which overlap with each other for creative sound-sculpting potential. Engineers at Sweetwater dig the "infinite notch" mode which allows you to turn any band into a notch filter for extreme attenuation of problem frequencies. The "In" switch lets you quickly A/B your sculpted sound with the dry source. Your 500 series rack needs a reliable EQ that consistently works well on any source, and that's what you get with the dbx 530 module.

Great EQ

By Erick from Utah

It is a really good utility EQ, and it's very affordable. I'm going to order a couple more at some point.

For fun, I tried the pair I bought out on the main bus. Unsurprisingly, it didn't really shine here. The topend is a bit thin for this, IMO. It's also not stepped, so it wouldn't be ideal being used in the mix bus anyways.

I would gladly use these on every single instrument channel that I wasn't looking to add some character to. It wouldn't be my first choice for a lead vocal track, though. I think it really shines at subtractive EQing or small boosts to individual instrument tracks.

Pros:
Affordable
Clean
Switchable to shelf on high and low bands

Not really cons, but don't know what else to call them:
Would not use on mix bus
Wouldn't be my first choice for vocals
Better for subtractive EQ on individual instrument tracks

Impressive

By Tony
Music Background: Producer, engineer,

Good surgical eqs. Used on 2 bus instead of plugin EQ. The 530 doesn't sound cheap at all. Surprised these things are priced this low . Not complaining about the price . Not much color coming out of these units and sometimes that can be a good thing. Tried them on bass and vocals. Tight lows on bass and nice air on vocals. A nice addition to any 500 series lunchbox.

Sweet and warm

By Matt from Seattle
Music Background: Home enthusiast

For the price these are amazing! Very sweet and warm. Not harsh or muddy at all. So easy to dial in a good sound. Compared a pair to stock Cubase plugins and the RND Portico EQ plugin. The dbx 530 easily surpasses the plugins. Comes very close in sound quality to the Great River 32EQ or Tonelux EQ5P! Only demo'd with DI acoustic and tube condenser vocals at this point, but this type of material can often be finicky about EQ, so I can imagine the 530 will perform well with other material. For the comparison, ran everything into a Kush Audio ubk Fatso on glue setting, in case you are curious. All in all, I am impressed. Definitely check out the 530 if you are in need of more 500 series EQ. :-)
