Midas 502 V2 500 Series Microphone Preamp
Midas 502 V2 500 Series Microphone Preamp Reviews
Heard by millions of concert goers and on countless live recordings, the Midas preamp has developed a devoted following among front-of-house engineers for its audiophile-grade sonics, forgiving overload tolerance, and characterful sound when pushed hard. The Midas 502 V2 mic/line preamp gives you grab-and-go access to this indispensable tool in a convenient 500 Series module. At Sweetwater, we particularly appreciate the sonic flexibility afforded by the inclusion of highpass and lowpass filters derived from the acclaimed Midas XL4 live performance mixing console and a switchable transformer-balanced output. And with 80dB of gain on tap, the Midas 502 V2 will effortlessly handle your lowest output mics.
Great Preamp for Bass
I bought this for recording bass and acoustic tracks. It has been a very good preamp. I use it with the Midas parametric eq and compressor in the Midas L6 rack. It is a great first preamp for introduction into the 500 series gear. It is good for vocals as well, but use a different preamp for vocals. This preamp would be great for voice overs with RE20 or SM7B. I have used it in this fashion with these microphones. For singing vocals I find this preamp clean and natural, but not a warm as other preamps.
Excellent value for excellent clarity and color
The Midas 502 delivers excellent clarity, gain, high and low pass filtering, and just a touch of harmonic distortion when you want it. LED ringed output and trim knobs make it easy to see just how hard you are pushing into the module as well as what the level is coming out. I find I can push the gain up pretty high on energetically delivered vocal at relatively close proximity to a mic without it breaking up or clipping into the module with the added benefit of being able to adjust the trim to make sure the level going out to my converters isn't clipping or going in too low.
Probably the best preamp at its price point
I have this next to Vintech, True, Cranborne, Broadhurst Gardens No. 1, MOTU racks, and three different Radial 500 units. It holds its own, no trouble at all, and the HPF and LPF make it extremely flexible. For years I've been watching/hearing reviews of the Shadow Hills Mono GAMA trying to convince myself to pop for one or two regardless of price. I saw a youtube video recently that compared one to the Midas 502 and the Midas 502 sounded better on the source, no lie. I will add another to my collection the next time I have the cash.
Excellent on multiple Sources
Very useful Preamp for home studio use; having input and output levels on the same device saves a headaches when punching yourself in for drums/vocals/etc. Additionally, having both a High-pass and a Low-pass option is useful as well, the amount of reduction isn't massive, but when you put them on a source like a highly distorted guitar, you can cut out the fizz on the high end (>12500 k) and the 'boom' of palm mutes (
