Classic feel, monster tone

By Kyle from NC on March 9, 2023 Music Background: 25 year guitar player… turned bassist? Maybe…

I've had this for 4 days or so. Haven't put it down. The color and wood grain are insane cool and the pickup combination is very usable. Thought I'd dislike the nut width as I'm really a guitar player but have been recruited as a bassist and have only ever played a P-bass but I love the neck on this. Satin neck is slick. Ebony board is smooth. Appointments like black hardware and headstock, anodized guard, abalone corners on the block inlays… it's perfect. Hipshots are great. If you're still reading this, stop and go get one of these before they're gone.

Fantastic Bass (After a few basic tweaks)

By Clifton Bryson from Gold Canyon, AZ on January 13, 2023

This bass is a rock / metal monster! I love the sounds that it gets! It's ok for slap, but that's not what it's built for. It's much higher quality than a fender bass and priced much better! It also has a lot of high end components you don't get in fender basses!

It has hipshot tuners, pleke'd frets, EMG Geezer pickups (duh!) and an ebony fret board. It is made of some beautiful wood that is super heavy. That translates into the amazing tone! The purple color is beautiful! It's not a deep dark purple and it's not as pink as some online pictures / videos you see. It's a true light purple.

I did have to do a few tweaks. I'm sure this is not common but the top split humbucker J pup wasn't working correctly. I opened the bass up and it was a loose connection on one of the pin connectors. This is an easy fix since nothing is soldered. Once I corrected this, the pickup worked perfectly!

It came setup with very high action, however I didn't have to adjust the neck to correct this. I simply lowered the bridges, slapped some 9-42's and it played perfectly. No fret buzz, great action and the inntonation was spot on! The fact that the frets are pleke'd is a huge plus. This bass is setup perfectly for me now! Love this bass!

Excellent Bass

By Tuna can from Pa on September 16, 2022

This bass is incredible in every way ! It sounds as great as it looks it is a heavier bass but when I played it live the weight didn't bother me at all so for me it's not a issue. My only con is that paying 1500 dollars for a premium bass it should have come with at least a gig bag so if you buy this bass make sure you have a case or a gig bag at home or order one with the bass.

Lakland skyline 44-64 GZ bass

Tone is a no-brainer with this bass. Mids are clean and powerful low-end ,the ebony fretboard is very gracious with sustain . A great bass for the money

Sounds as good as it looks

By Mike Hester from KY on April 26, 2022 Music Background: playing bass 35 years, in bands, on stage and in the studio.

Sound is solid and thick, with the right amount of sizzle when you roll the tone knob up. Very solid feeling with great fit and finish. Plays like butter, I actually had to raise the action about 3/4 turn because the action was a little too low for my attack (plus I'll be tuning this down to 1/2 step for some songs). It honestly feels a little heavier than I was expecting, but I'm a pretty solid guy and I also believe that a bass should feel like you're holding a big chunk of wood, so that's no big deal. I'd buy this again and again.

Love this Bass

By Pastor Mark McVey from Dayton, Ohio on November 3, 2021 Music Background: Pastor for 35 years, worship leader and team builder

I own and play several Fender Basses, and love the way they play and sound, was a bit hesitant at first to pull the trigger on this one, but upon receiving my Lakland Bass I am so glad I did... Sweetwater is amazing as it was great right out of the box. I am very happy with this outstanding bass guitar.

LIKE A FANDER BUT EVEN BETTER

By Ted from Montana on August 10, 2021 Music Background: I play jazz bass in a classic rock cover band

This one might have come from the fender custom shop I don't know about like revier amps did with the real mesa guy back in the day, y'all know about that man them things do get tone but the neck on this one is better than my Mexican P. I think it has something to do with the fit and finish normally I'm not a reall big aftives guy as I don't do pitch squeals on bass but I don't know anyone who doesn't like these and I just love having a full Eq on board. Just outstanding attention to detail

By Michael Menkes on June 2, 2020

Is it just another PJ clone? not at all. So many refinements of the original Fender concept at here. The neck is both slender at 1.5" its also shallow with a natural satin finish and this makes for the fastest and most accurate neck I've ever played. There is no bolt plate so the heel can be played around very comfortably. All the ergonomics are optimized. Mine is only 9 lbs 1 oz (in black) and with the skinny neck, small head stock and ultralight tuners, its like the neck doesn't even exist. The ebony board is fantastic, the frets are pleked, and the inlay work is divine. Flawless instrument. The electronics are all EMG and one of their best products.

Lakland Purple

By Sweetwater Customer on July 18, 2023

This bass would be absolutely perfect if it had a maple neck!

Purple People Eater

By Aaron Ballard from Tonganoxie, KS on September 9, 2022

I love it. Its jazzy, smooth, creamy and it's got balls. Deep low end and I like it there, all the time.I feel for the money, I need more options in tone, volume, active eqs and push pull coil options. I am impressed overall with craftsmanship from Lakland. Great bass! Great color! Great sound!

Get your Geezer

By Rob from Albuquerque, NM on December 28, 2021 Music Background: Guitar for 35 years, bass for two

Purchased this bass a few months back after waiting for the first batch to arrive at Sweetwater. I prefer active EQ, but this is a really nice instrument. The split pickup is very deep sounding. The j single coil is clear and articulate, but not as powerful (loud) as the neck pickup. With two volume knobs it is easy to get a variety of tones. Rolling off the tone knob is useful for getting a more mellow sound.
Fit and finish were fine when the bass first arrived. Great Sweetwater setup. Now the frets are beginning to poke out the side of the neck a bit, probably due to the dry environment of the desert Southwest, as well as winter heating in the house. Not a big deal, but noticeable.
You don't have to play Sweetleaf on this, but you should.

Smooth & Beautiful

By Aaron from The Forest on October 9, 2021 Music Background: I play

The neck is buttery, feels quick. The body is awesome. However, the pickups to me are a little to sharp. I like Braun und rund.

It just didn't work for me

By T Jackson from Paris, TX on December 16, 2022 Music Background: Professional Musician

I played a few Lakland basses that were a little more high-end. I wanted this one for the deep tone it offers. However, it was just too heavy (Ash body) and the neck did not feel right to me. It was similar to a Jazz bass. I am a solid Fender PBass player. The differences were to much for me. Sweetwater did a great job getting it to me and helping me get it returned. Nothing wrong with the bass. You might like it. I bought another bass to replace it. David is the BEST!
