Dunlop Tortex Standard Guitar Picks - .50mm, Red, 12-pack
Dunlop Tortex Standard Guitar Picks - .50mm, Red, 12-pack Reviews
Originally designed to replicate the feel of a tortoiseshell pick, Dunlop’s Tortex line has since outgrown its iconic tortoise mascot, revolutionizing the world of guitar picks for over 40 years. Before Tortex picks came along, guitar players could only choose from a limited selection of plectrums that often came in only three ambiguous sizes: light, medium, and heavy. Jim Dunlop sought to provide a solution by arming players with a complete range of thicknesses standardized to the 100th of a millimeter and easily recognizable by Dunlop’s signature color-coded system. Excellent durability, perfect grip, and snappy tone have made Tortex the industry-standard pick for guitar players around the world. Whether you’re a pro or just beginning your musical journey, you can be sure that there’s a Tortex pick for you!
Crisp plucking and strumming for acoustic guitar
Whereas the reliable .88mm green tortex picks are my standard for electric playing, they proved too aggressive for my new acoustic guitar. I knew that a thinner option would be the way to go. The .50mm tortex picks provided just the right amount of thinness to give a crisp yet relaxed tone without being too bendy and frail. In time the little black turtle and his text will disappear, presumably merged into the flesh of my fingers, but possibly transcended into another dimension. No matter, the physical performance of the pick will remain for a long time, until it becomes too rounded off or is otherwise lost. Thank goodness there's 11 more in there.
When picking a pick, I always pick this pick.
I've been using the .5mm red Tortex picks for at least a couple decades.
I use them for both electric and acoustic playing. I feel that I break less strings with this lighter gauge, and also feel that I can finesse a wider range of tones using them. They way I hold them and play them at a slight angle, I do get wear on the leading edge faster than if I was hitting the strings perfectly perpendicular. That's just my style though.
A bad guitar pick
I used this pick for about a half hour when I noticed my thumb and finger had turned black from the tortex logo Dunlop USA .50 printing on the pick. Thought it might be just the one pick, but all of the other picks did the same thing.
Puzzled
The picks appear to have some flaws. They continously miss crucial strings when playing classic rock, they jump out of your hand playing heavy metal, and they don't seem to know anything about playing country.. or it could be me !!
Great picks!
I've been playing Dunlop .50mm tortex picks for over 25 years, I like the tone i get from them and the fact they are unbreakable and last forever. My opinion it's the best quality pick for the price on the market.
Dunlop Tortex standard guitar picks
These picks are really good for controlling your pick with good gripping on the surface and good quality material. I would recommend them.
Good pick to always have in your pocket
When I first started playing guitar I always used the Dunlop nylon picks, until I discovered these. The nylon ones feel good, but the tone and clarity that you get from these is ten times better. (At least for what I'M aiming for). The only downside that I can see is that after a while, the point gets worn down and gets wider. (This might just be because of the way I play) This takes some of the clarity away. I usually swap them out for freshies every few weeks.
Love these on my acoustic
Great picks for Acoustic guitars! I was using the orange, .60's until I was at a friend's house and forgot my pic, so she loaned me hers... These are Delrin, and really well manufactured. Edges are rounded and smooth. The only downside to these picks is the printing rubs off on your fingers... They're my favorites! (I still use my Orange .60's on my electric guitar...)
The pick of picks
After decades of playing I still use this pick. It takes quite a while to wear them down and the NEVER break. The grip is perfect and even though I'm lured to try other picks here and there I always come back to the Tortex. The .50 give a happy medium of flex and stiffness for all purpose playing of both acoustic and electric guitar.
