My second review of this pick
I was a little bit unfair in my original review, so let me try this again. I come from playing mostly nylon strings for the past few years. I'm trying to transition back to steel string more these days, and holding a pick in my hand is something I haven't done much of in the past few years. My first review was a little bit over the top, when I said these picks have no grip. Personally I need a grippier pick, but that does not mean these don't have grip...many of the reviewers find it good, so I would go with that.
Jason, if you see this, please feel free to delete my first review. Thanks.
Disappointed
I was expecting a pick called Gator Grip to be, well, grippy. When I got these I tried then right away and they just slip right out of my fingers. Bummer. Well, I'll just give these away and try the real grippy ones with some meat to them where your fingers pinch them.
My Favorite
The texture on these bad boys is so nice. Good thickness/weight for picking or light strumming.
Great picks for my acoustic playing
I use these for acoustic only but I still love them. They feel pretty similar to the tortex picks but have a little extra grip which is great for acoustic so your not dropping the picks in the sound hole. They also are just the right guage for me on the acoustic anything lower is just not good but higher is to punchy. If your debating between this and tortex picks just try them both and see which one you like better. The biggest difference is the color.
Purple "Gator Picks"
These are by far the best picks I've tried yet, I got a variety pack and these were my fav. They play the sound the same as tortex yellows, but play much better. They slide of the strings easier and just make it easier to play. The only gripe is they are a bit slippery, but that makes it play better. I would also recommend .60 ultex, a bit different but play similar if you like the feel of these.
Fantastic
I used to use tortex yellow .73 picks. These are very similar in sound and attack, but noticeably different in FEEL. They feel great! In my opinion, better than the tortex yellows. They're smaller than the tortex, but have a little more grip. The size is similar to a guitar center pick. The most notable difference for me is the weight. These feel much lighter in the hand (like paper). They instantly gave me a LITTLE more control and dexterity. I also have small hands, which probably play into why I like these so much. Note: they darken a bit after playing. Probably the white grip powder coming off from sweat/oils. Doesn't affect the grip.
Quality & Value
Precisely what I needed. They're comfortable to hold and easy to use. They provide an excellent no-slip grip, the perfect balance between firmness and flexibility when used with .009-.042 gauge strings. Certainly a value for the price. Well packaged and very fast shipping. Sweetwater's customer service is second to none!
Nice Picks
First a small gripe. I honestly thought there would be more grip to these picks, as a retired metalworker with 47 years of guitar playing under my belt my thumb and fingers have very little grip on them and are quite shiny so a bit of extra grip is always preferred. I usually use the heavy Max Grip picks and they have good grip but decided I wanted something lighter to play around with. The flexibility of the .71mm pick is just what I was looking for and they feel really comfortable in use. I would have given the 5 star rating except for the fact that I was expecting better grip surface. I can solve that problem, so all in all a very nice guitar pick.
A Really Good Pick
I've been using this pick for a couple of years now, and all I have to do to see how good it is, is to play with any other pick. All I hear when using the "purple" pick is the sound of a plucked string. Other picks don't come off my strings cleanly, making a pick noise when the pick releases the string.
The only"con" of this pick is the white gripping powder does wear off causing me to be careful I don't drop the pick. How many times have I dropped my pick in the past couple of years? Once. Not bad, I guess.
Best I've tried yet
Feels great and moves around less in your fingers.
