Marshall 2555X Silver Jubilee 100-watt Reissue Tube Head Reviews

100-watt Reissue Tube Guitar Amplifier Head with High/Low Output Switching

In 1987, Marshall celebrated 25 years of amp building with their original Silver Jubilee Series, catching the attention of guitarists such as the up-and-coming Slash, and then disappearing just a year later. This 2555X Silver Jubilee reissue brings back Marshall's highly-coveted 2-channel, 100-watt head with all the vibe and look of the original plus a smattering of cool improvements. Like its predecessors, the 2555X includes high- and low-output switching. If you've ever heard a 100-watt Marshall at full roar, you'll appreciate how this feature lets the 2555X sing at both arena and club levels. This edition also gives you even lower noise performance and improved reliability.

This is it, one of my all time favorites

By Sweetwater Customer on January 12, 2023

So my main head is a JCM800 2203 which I love. The Jubilee of course has a very different tone, but it's like the 800's perfect cousin. It is amazing for all the reasons you know. The gain is wonderful, the clean is wonderful, and the clipped clean is amazing with single coils or humbuckers for that biting clean tone. The 3 EQ knobs are extremely sensitive, much moreso than other Marshall heads, so you get very different tones by changing these slightly. One surprise to me: it's not that loud, nowhere close to as loud as as JCM800 or a Plexi 100 watt head. The nice thing about this is that you don't need an attenuator to play at bedroom levels, this actually works well as a home amp. But in a band setting, you do have to totally crank the master and lead gain to keep up with a full band, whereas I barely have to have my JCM800 on 2 with a full band. I've always wanted one of these and it's never going anywhere, this is now one of my core amps.

Wow

I feel like I have "my amp" for the first time in a long time. Great crunch and distortion tones, I haven't played much clean yet but it sounded good with an SG with a Duncan jazz in the neck even if it was just for a short time. I bought this for it's overdriven sounds and wow, really nice. I couldn't be much happier with an amp.

Modeling enthusiastic

I am usually very open to use technology for amp simulation. I consider that technology nowadays is very closed to the old tube amps. I thought a lot before to pull the trigger and purchase this amp. Now, after couples of weeks using it, I can share in this review my impression.
I am very happy with this amp. The tones that you can get out it is amazing. No doubt one the best investment on my guitar journal that I have made. Thank Sweetwater to made everything so easy during the process

The real deal

Awesome amp, classic Marshall sound, only thing I wish it had? Old spring reverb.

Jubilee Farmer

By Sweetwater Customer on August 19, 2020

I own 5 original 2555's and one 2555x and I can tell you the 2555x is an extremely close and well made remake. It's as close as you can get in modern times in my opinion. I would be happy with either an original or a reissue, they both do the job

Greatest Marshall ever made!

By Scott from Alexandria, Louisiana on July 12, 2020 Music Background: Working musician with over 30 years experience.

I own a few Marshalls (JCM 2000, JCM 900, JVM), but the Jubilee is by far the best one in my opinion that I own. I bought the 20 watt version of this amp a few years ago and gigged with it quite a bit and I still have. It was plenty loud enough for small and medium size venues and perfect for use in the studio. It does lack some headroom though in live use on the clean channel but I rarely used it anyway. When I saw that Sweetwater was once again carrying the 100 watt version of this beast, I had to have it. Some of my favorite players have used this amp (Slash, Joe Bonamassa, John Frusciante) and these players have totally different styles and tones which show the versatility of this amp. If you like the quintessential Marshall tone and the simplicity of a two channel amp, this is the amp for you. Also, as usual, Sweetwater's customer service was awesome! I have bought quite a bit of gear from these guys and it's always a pleasure dealing with them.

Duh, it's a Silver Jubilee of course its great!

By Joshua Cheyka from Weston, WI on July 2, 2020 Music Background: Rock N Roll Guitarist for 17 years

Purchased this amplifier after 16 years of wanting one (an original jubilee I wanted for that long) prices were through the roof so I came to grips that I would never own one until...I heard about 4 months ago that Marshall finally made a reissue of the Jubilee and that it had also been out for 5 years already!. Upon the shock of hearing that I figured this may be my only chance to ever own a brand new Jubilee with a warranty so I called the guys up at Sweetwater and they hooked me up very fast with a 2555x 100 watt Beauty! Love the tones they're everything I've dreamed of and more! Amp is also a total power house of a rock & roll machine, easily puts my guitarists Randall V2 to shame in the mix and in bragging rights.

Best of the Best

Best Marshall of all time in my opinion! Not taking anything away from other amps, but for a solid, rock n roll machine, THIS IS THE ONE! I'm not really a clean channel person, but the cleans on this amp hold up beyond expectations. The lead channel is where I live. I like to play in the realm of WASP, LA Guns, Motley Crue, etc. (Just to give an idea of the sounds I get from the 2555X.) I originally purchased the 2525H, and then after a week I decided I needed the big boy version! I dont think you could go wrong with either, but if you're able to snag this reissue, DO IT! Thanks to the guys at Sweetwater for getting this amp to me super fast!

Marshall's Finest!

By Dizzy Aster from Sacramento on April 22, 2020 Music Background: Active musician

I've played through, Plexis, JCM800s, 900s, etc. I have owned an orginal JCM2000 for around 5 years now and love it. But there was always something missing. I finally pulled the trigger on the 2555X and was not disappointed! Every type of clean, crunch, or distortion you could want from a Marshall, this is it. And shout out to the guys at Sweetwater for getting this beast to me super quick!

Great Deal

I have great success with Sweetwater ever since I started doing business with them over one year ago, and this deal was no exception. I bought one of these Silver Jubilee heads one week ago. I took a chance and order the B-Box deal. I know it said that there may be some cosmetic issues, but when I received and unpacked it, I was blown away. I actually set it in a well lighted area and looked for the damages, or any damage, for that matter. I couldn't find thing wrong with this amp. Everything looked like it was brand new and, when I plugged it in, I was blown away again. This amp is a keeper for me with it's awesome Marshall tone. A great addition to my ever-growing arsenal of equipment. My advise to other enthusiasts here is to take that chance and also order the B-Box deals, if they are offered on stuff you are interested in. Not only do you get the stuff for hundreds less, but you still get that quality and service from Sweetwater. I'm telling ya, these guys have treated me better than those other companies who claim that they also do (eg; Guitar Center). I'm a life long Sweetwater customer and proud to say it.

A great foundation

By J from LAKE CHARLES, LA on May 1, 2016

The silver jubilee is a great base (not to be confused with basic) sonic foundation. It has a simple control layout make it quick and easy to find a proper tone. It could almost be considered a 3 channel amp. The cleans are clean, The rhythm cliping is for all intents and purposes a "crunch" channel, and the lead channel is very impressive. The eq is a shining example of what all eq's should be, very responsive with fender esque sensitively. Turning the eq knobs drastically change the sonic charactics of the amp; not in a bad way- not in the way one would expect from a marshall. I paired this 100 watt head with a Marshall JVM c212 cabinet so that I could try and tame some of that 100 Watts to a more digestable level. This was Marshalls concept for the future and I think it's really awesome that they kept it mostly original. Guitar amplifiers and what is considered great tone in general is mostly subjective, but with its simple layout and responsive eq the silver jubilee is a great tone foundation.

True Marshall

By Matt Wilkerson from Morristown, TN on January 5, 2016 Music Background: Gigging, Recording, Collecting

I've owned several Marshalls over the years: 30th ann., 900, Plexi, and currently a 2204 (800). I was looking for an amp that would take the sound of my 800 up a notch in saturation. Basically, I wanted the next link in the evolution beyond the JCM 800. After doing a lot of research I found the Silver Jubilee to be the amp I wanted. I have several notes about this amp.

First, this is most definitely a Marshall. It's not an Orange or a Mesa. Those are great amp manufacturers as well. I know because I own amps from them. This amp has the true, unique Marshall sound.

Second, I've tried the amp with a V30 (similar to the Silver Jubilee reissue cabinet) and a greenback cabinet. The amp has a completely different personality with each. The V30 cabinet is essential to nailing the sounds you hear on the demo video, but I personally prefer the amp with the greenback cabinet.

Third, I was not overly impressed with the amp the first time I heard it. Dialing in the tone, at least for my ears, took some tinkering. The amp (like most really good amps) relies heavily on the tweaking of the mids and the presence controls. The half power switch adds a significant amount of low end to the amp as well while cutting the bite back. What's cool about the amp is that a small adjustment of the mids and presence and/or switching to high power provides a diverse set of sounds.

Fourth (and most importantly), the Silver Jubilee has almost a boutique amp quality to it in the way it responds to your playing dynamics. I can make the amp sounds very clean to saturated simply by changing pick attack and strength. It is a very expressive amp on par with amps that are twice its price.

epic tone

brilliant sound with one of the best marshall pre-amp ever made!

Just Wonderful

By Matthew Peyton from New York Area on August 5, 2015 Music Background: Former pro and daily player.

I'm pretty jaded and have some other really good hundred watt British style heads. The previous champion in my studio is the Friedman Brown Eye and this keeps right up with it. Pretty much every feature sounds terrific. Giving it some crank fills out the bottom. The tone controls really work! At night I use it into a Rock Crusher and image response plug-ins that I bring up in logic Pro. Before 9 PM I have a booth that I can crank this into some cabinets using the crusher to attenuate about six DB. It's got that Marshall presence thing that is completely unique to real Marshall's in my opinion. I almost bought a/black Jubilee about three years ago for more money than this but it was a little too beat up. To have this amp brand-new sitting in my rack makes me smile every time I walk into my studio. Thank you Matt Masek -The hardest working salesman in show business!

Beast

By Wayne from Webster, Massachusetts on January 10, 2021 Music Background: Studio musician, rock star

I bought this amp about 6 months ago in 2020. I thought i was buying a high gain amp, well its really not high gain. I was a little let down. I haven't owned a Marshall since the 1990's when i had 2 JCM 900 heads and they had more gain. If you want lots of gain buy a JVM.

I mostly run this amp in half power mode which is 50 watt triode mode. Triode mode is warmer sounding to my ears. You can use the rhythm clip mode and will give you more gain but to me it's useless because it thins out the sound of the amp which is otherwise FAT...

Im using this amp with a Universal Audio OX which is stellar by the way. I didn't like the tone at first but then i did a bias. The amp was set cold at 60.I looked online and a lot of people said 73 was a sweet spot and that is true. Being able to bias this amp without taking it apart is really sweet.
The next thing I did was ad a range master treble booster and that really made this amp sound like a beast..
Things just opened up with the treble booster. My jaw actually hit the ground.Thats how good it sounds.

In closing its a great amp, huge sound stage, punchy, articulate when setup right and with the treble booster. This amp is a great tone platform. Marshall has their sound and i missed it glad to be back. Im getting great tone In the studio. Thank you Sweetwater and Matt Brooks.!!!

Beautiful looks and tone

By Matt G from Milky Way Galaxy on February 10, 2016

About 2 weeks into owning this guy. I bought it with the intent of just using it as a clean platform for my pedal board.
The crunch & lead channel really starts to sound good when the volumes are at 5-6 and the drive about 6-8.

The bias was set really cool (about 60mV/30mA). I installed a Mullard reissue in V1, a Tung-Sol in V2, and a Sovtek LPS in V3 and adjusted bias to 80mV/40ma.

The clean channel is fuller, the lead channel: warmer-bigger sounding...much smoother overall and reduced the 'fizzy' sound.
Now, I may use the lead channel more than I initially expected too.

This high gain head is very quiet, the effects loop works good (be nice if there was a send level), and as others state, the half power mode brings the volume down a little but robs you of tone.

Yes

By Brad from Nashville, TN on August 5, 2015 Music Background: Former Pro Player of Three Notes. Current part-time studio rat.

I was both excited and highly skeptical about this one. Frankly, I had concerns about spending this much cash on the sound of angry bumblebees with chainsaws.

The bumblebees are definitely available, they certainly put forth loads of negative affect, and they do carry little chainsaws, but it's a unique and usable tone in the right context. The rhythm crunch sounds terrible, but those diodes really work on the lead channel.

The real unexpected treat on this guy was actually in the clean channel; turn that little fella way up on input and output gain, and you get this rich overdrive that you are unlikely to duplicate precisely on another amp.

If you're looking for a box of rock that typical Nashville guitarists would laugh at you for playing, this is a great contender--and that might be the best reason for getting one. You can make it sound like dookie if you want, but you can also get two or three types of very cool, unique tones that you won't find in other Marshalls. Crank it up loud for the fairy dust.

I don't know how to say it beyond: "What happened to you Marshall?" Just a really bad sounding amp all around. Not sure what it is. Spongy, buzzy Fender? Snarly, ice-picky Marshall? Awful Mesa clone? This is sadly one of the worst amps I've ever played through. I was waiting so long for this amp only to be horribly disappointed. I'm going the Hi-Watt, Orange route for my English tone. As a long-time Marshall lover, I'm cut to the quick:(
