Taylor 214ce Acoustic-electric Guitar - Natural Reviews

6-string Acoustic-electric Guitar with Solid Spruce Top, Layered Rosewood Back and Sides, and Ebony Fingerboard - Natural

The Taylor 214ce acoustic-electric guitar is a celebration of innovation. Bob Taylor’s signature Grand Auditorium body shape has the width and depth of a dreadnought, but its tapered waist and graceful contours make it look like a smaller instrument and impart balance and presence to the big sound, making it a favorite of recording engineers. With its slender, fast neck, the 214ce plays like a Taylor — which is to say, effortlessly. With its gorgeous rosewood back and sides, solid Sitka spruce top, and built-in ES2 electronics, the Taylor 214ce is your ticket to great things.

My first Taylor

By Benjamin Harris from CLARKSTON, WA on April 1, 2024 Music Background: Guitarist, pianist, drummer, and producer

Bought this as my first Taylor guitar, I wanted an acoustic that was pretty nice so that I wouldn't necessarily need to replace it in the future/grow out of it. It looks and sounds beautiful and the playing is amazing. I tried it with some reverb and it sounds fabulous, the sound quality from the pickup is what you would expect from a Taylor. The sound quality unplugged is just as good if not better. I have found 0 things I don't like about this thing, great guitar and recommend it to anyone looking for a affordable but amazing acoustic.

Very nice !!

By Sweetwater Customer on December 14, 2023

I own several top notch guitars and when i bought the 214ce i was looking for something i could knock around and play out without having to worry about damaging an expensive instrumenet. Turns out this guitar blew me away so now its the only acoustic i really play. Plays like butter and the tone is great when plugged in. The tone has actually improved now that the wood has aged a bit. Has a thin neck which i like because i play a lot of rock so it plays faster like an electric. Cant say enough good things about this guitar. For the money its the best guitar out there. Looking forward to upgrading to my next Taulor.

Taylor 214

By John Richmond from AnnArbor on October 17, 2023 Music Background: I started playing in 1966.

Hey everybody, this Taylor to 214 is killer. Far better Guitar than I am on guitar player. Super fast neck. Great wood. Jack W, the associate that helped me with purchase was great. Very cool guy. The Taylor guitar operation in Mexico is 1st rate. Lots of women guitar builders. The factory was clean and modern. Great video on YouTube. This is my 3rd guitar purchase from sweetwater. My next purchase from Jack W. is going to be a Gibson SG standard. if you're looking for a great acoustic guitar, this is an excellent choice.

Taylor 214ce

By Sweetwater Customer from AL on September 26, 2023 Music Background: Former UA MDB musician and now guitar hobbyist.

I'm just a moody guitar hobbyist/hacker, but I know what I like.
The 214ce is beautiful and has a full 25 1/2" scale length.
Most of the time it "scratches the itch".
I think maybe "solid wood back and sides" is maybe a little over-rated.

Guitar sounds and feels amazing! I wish I had bought it sooner. Sweetwater shipping is amazing and thank you Dan!

Great quality

By Sweetwater Customer on June 16, 2023

214ce arrived with no issues. Double boxed and and all was safe.

Fit and finish seem superb. No flaws to be found.

Adjusted the truss rod to take some excess bow out of the neck.

Plays fantastic - very loud and even projection across all strings - Great tonal range - not too bright or chirpy.

Haven't yet plugged it in so can't comment on the pickup.

200 line seems like a great sweetspot for a quality instrument that isn't so expensive that you fear taking it out of the house.

As expected

I bought this for my 17 year old son for Christmas. Once opened he proceeded to play it for 2 plus hours. He absolutely loves it. He went back to my guitar for a comparison and was surprised how difficult my old 80's Sigma was to play. The Taylor checks all of the boxes for him. The cutaway was the main reason to get it but the smooth action and articulate sound really round everything out so well. Can't go wrong with this one in our opinion

Rich tone

By Michael from South Carolina on November 25, 2022 Music Background: 40 years playing guitar

My first Taylor. I have wanted one for at least 20 years. I have been happy with my Yamaha. I just thought now was the right time to make that investment as it is an investment. Very nice tone and quality construction. Good fit and finish. Great looking guitar and plays nice. Only complaint is that the action was quite high and no relief in the neck. My guitar instructor also does guitar repair and set ups. He got things corrected and action much lower. I have to get used to the heavier strings and different feel. The bass is rich and highs are bright…almost too bright with a pick. Right now I mainly play finger style and the guitar just shines with the tone from fingers and thumb. The gig bag is very nice and will do well taking my guitar around. Great service from Sweetwater and box arrived in great shape and on time. My main contact is Dan, but someone else took my order over the phone that day. Great service from both guys! I also got the Baby Taylor and it just arrived today. Waiting 24 hours to open that box.

The tone and playability is Awesome!

By David from MO on October 26, 2022

This is my first Taylor guitar and I have to say I am thrilled with it. The quality and craftsmanship are excellent. The sustain is unbelievable. I have a couple of other name-brand acoustic guitars and this is by far the best. After researching, I went with the 214ce and it was in my price range. Well worth the money! Purchasing from Sweetwater was a no-brainer as I have purchased from them in the past, Sweetwater is the best! If you're looking for a quality, great-sounding guitar in this price range, you can't go wrong.

Very nice

After getting the guitar set up, it is a very nice guitar. It looks nice and plays very well and sounds awesome. Taylor makes a very good quality guitar. Thank you Sweetwater for making it so simple to buy.

Wow!

By David from Tallahassee, FL on August 31, 2022 Music Background: 40 years guitar and bass in many bands.

Received my Taylor today. Love this guitar full, crisp tone, and so easy to fret. Highly recommend this model with an affordable price. Great customer service from Skylar and co...as always!

Plays great right out of the box

By David Dickerson from Leo, Indiana on August 29, 2022 Music Background: Guitars and vocals.

I notified my salesman I wanted to try a couple of Taylor guitars from the gallery and he had them brought to the acoustic guitar area at Sweetwater and we opened the box. Both 214ce's play perfect right out of the box. Tone is so well balanced. Took it home and all the string heights, neck relief and specs were perfectly at the recommendations by Taylor. Now I have used this guitar to perform and the pick up sounds great. The whole experience was delightful. You can't go wrong with this guitar and Sweetwater is such a great place to buy an instrument!

Great Guitar!!

By William Webb from Council Bluffs, IA on April 22, 2022

Won't get into all the details, but it's a great guitar worth the money if you're thinking about it? just do it you won't be disappointed. As for Sweetwater, I've bought 5 guitars from them and have never been disappointed. Always recieved fast delivery. Thanks Andrew

Well worth

By Jared Jaskiewicz on March 7, 2022

I was contemplating for quite some time between a Martin and a Taylor. I landed on the Taylor solely because of the cutaway which I seemed to struggle to find within this price point. I was blown away by the quality of the build, sound, and case(which was included with purchase). Throughout my search, I had played numerous Taylors and Martins the sound from this Taylor won in my book. I needed something with more projection to play shows with and this did it. If you're on the fence about it, hop it and run with it.

Seriously Awesome!

By John Lullie from TALKING ROCK, GA on March 2, 2022

Don't be skeptical about all the 5 star reviews you see on this Taylor 214ce. They are for real. The Playability of this guitar is just off the charts. It is by far the most comfortable acoustic I've ever played, and I have played a LOT of acoustics in my day. Any seasoned guitarist after the first 20 seconds trying this out would pretty much say the same thing... "Wow, nice!".

I purchased a brand new Martin 2C-X2E about 2 months ago and it's really nice, but does not play anywhere near as nice as this Taylor. The Martin does sound a bit deeper in the bass area but as for playability, the minor trade off is a no-brainer when comparing the two. May end up selling the Martin :/

Smooth and crisp.

By Bruce from Oceanside, Ca. on November 19, 2021 Music Background: Solo artist

The Taylor was delivered a couple of days early which was a nice surprise. It plays great. I use a .70mm pick for a brighter sound. The B string was a little twangy at first but seems to have worked itself out. I love the full sound and the electronics are quiet and half a nice range.

Taylor Quality

By Cknepler from ILLINOIS on November 8, 2021 Music Background: Intermediate Guitar hero

I purchased a Taylor electric acoustic guitar Model 214 CE. All I can say is Wow. It plays incredible compared to my other guitars....fits me like a glove and I'm sure you'll enjoy it also.

About 14 yrs old and still sounding sweet

By Matt from Oregon on October 15, 2021 Music Background: 30+ years of guitar, recording, mixing, and producing

I bought mine around 2007 and it remains my "go to" acoustic. While it's not as nice or rich sounding overall as my 2 Martin 000-28EC guitars, its actually a more versatile guitar. Notes ring out clearly with just enough harmonic overtone to add some light warmth/sweetness. Great for fingerstyle, pick, strummed, lead, etc - you name it. I've done a fair amount of session work on a wide range of styles and this guitar works great in that setting. Easily get a good clear sound with microphones, and the onboard electronics provide a nice clean signal for further processing (or for a great mic-free sound when playing live). Despite using laminated wood, it seems to still be sounding a little sweeter as it ages. Plus, the top on mine has aged beautifully as it has gradually gotten a little darker coloring over time. Stays in tune very well. Great value, hard to beat it.

Fantastic Guitar at an Amazing Price!

By Brian Jaime from Vallejo, CA on April 12, 2021 Music Background: Hobbyist

There's not much to say about the Taylor 214ce. It does what it does exceptionally well with no frills or flashy gimmicks. Even still this is one beautiful guitar. And the tone is superb! The sound fills a room like it's speaking from the chest: punchy, bassy, powerful!

More than expected.

By Rick from Miami Florida on August 21, 2020

Awesome guitar for the money. The attentiveness from the Sweetwater staff was outstanding. Considering the nightmare encountered at a local "authorized dealer" I would recommend anyone to just purchase their equipment from Sweetwater.

Taylor quality for a great price!

By Jimbo from Pasadena, MD on July 6, 2020 Music Background: Weekend Warrior

This is a great guitar. When it arrived, I opened up the case and the thing just screams quality. Picked it up and strummed an E chord and it was in tune. WOW. The set up and inspection from Sweetwater were impeccable and the guitar just plays like butter. Plugged in it sounds great too and I can't wait to put it into service. Couple it with the fact that I got 36 months interest free financing and it's just a no-brainer. Get yourself one!!! Thanks to Nick P. for the help in picking this guitar.

A very nice guitar.

By Paul Richardson from LICKING, MO on May 12, 2020 Music Background: Piano player, beginner guitar, church musician.

The 214 is a beautiful guitar that you don't mind playing. I was amazed at it's projection and tone from the GA size and I love the white binding this guitar has. Frets and neck are nice and the electronics work well. Great purchase. Thanks Jonathan Appleton for the wonderful service and attention to detail with my order.

Very well pleased.

By Doug Polk from Chico, CA on April 27, 2022 Music Background: 13 years drums, 50 years guitar

I had been looking for a replacement for my old Epiphone 150. I loved that old collection of plywoods but I wanted something a bit better, not something diamond studded, but something with good reviews and overall better tone. And the quality and shape of the neck was important. The 214ce seemed to fit the bill nicely, and after I bought it I found that was more then true. Sweetwater was also very easy to work with, perhaps the easiest company I have ever delt with. My sales tech seemed to know what I wanted in just two minutes of talk, and I am very pleased with this purchase. I will certainly deal with them again.

Glad for Taylor Warranty

By Richard Snow from LEESBURG, VA on October 26, 2022

I've had this guitar for about 3 months now. If I would have reviewed it during the first month I would have given it 2 stars. If I'm reviewing it today (without considering the first 2 months) I'd give it 5 stars. But given the history I'm landing on 4.

I went to a local guitar shop and spent lots of time exploring acoustics. I was also considering a Martin or a Breedlove, but my ear just kept going back to the sweet sound of Taylor. Ive purchased from Sweetwater in the past and trust them, so decided to buy online and ditch the local dealer.

I was very excited to receive the guitar a few days later, and the first day or 2 was very happy with the beautiful sound! But soon realized my fingers and hands hurt similar to when I was playing a very cheap acoustic I own. I have always been an electric player, but recently started playing acoustic much more. My hope was that this guitar would be much easier to play. As I started playing more, I realized the action on the guitar was very high, almost double what it should be. That explained why it was so hard to play!

After going back and forth with Sweetwater, I ultimately found out that the high action was due to an underset neck. My brand new guitar needed a neck reset. I don't live anywhere near Sweetwater so they suggested I take it to a local luthier and they would help with the expenses.

So, I took to a local shop and handed it over to a guy who said he'd been working on them since the early 90s. He confirmed the action was not right, and 2 days later got it back to me with a perfect set up after resetting the neck. During my 2 trips to that shop I closely studies the Taylor's they had. I quickly learned that the action heights vary widely from guitar to guitar on Taylors, even on the more expensive American mades.

To my delight, when I picked up my guitar I found out Taylor covered the neck reset under the factory warranty. The luthier said the guitar should not have been sold in that condition, and since I was the original owner, Taylor covered it.

Now, the action is so sweet, and was set to my playing style (as described by me to the lutheir). It sounds and plays just like I expected it to, but it took a minute to get there. I was a little disappointed that Sweetwater shipped it like that, especially at this price point. Ultimately Sweetwater helped to make it right, but I still can't help but feel a little disappointed. If you are thinking about buying this guitar, highly recommend you play it in person first. If you can't, check on Taylor's website to see if they have an authorized dealer nearby.

Taylor 214ce

By Terry from Albuquerque, NM on July 13, 2022 Music Background: Guitarist, most genres. Multi instrumentalist, initially trained in classical music. Musical instrument repair tech specializing in wind and string instruments.

I have wanted a good quality inexpensive acoustic guitar for some time and this fit the bill. Quality is everything you expect from Taylor, well built, well finished, and really great tone. While the top will develop greater character over time the laminate back and sides already have great tonal quality. The instrument was reasonably well set up when it arrived, requiring a slight truss rod adjustment which I made after it had about three weeks to adjust to the high desert climate where I live. This is a great sounding and playing guitar at a very reasonable price.

My only knock is very minor but worthy of mention and that is the corners of the nut are annoyingly sharp. I'm not sure if that is an oversight or just how they make them. It is an easy fix and I'll remedy the problem when I change the strings.

Overall this is a fantastic bargain!

An Acoustic Guitar That Functions

By Patrick from Georgia on April 30, 2022

I've had this for about six months and I'm still bonding with it. I had to adjust the neck as the b string was buzzing and it just got worse over time. Tonally, it's bright and has a decent amount of bass. It's night and day tonally compared to my 80's Alvarez. I bought this to have one really high quality acoustic for the rest of my life, and while it has a nice quality, I predict it will not be my last acoustic. It will be my last Taylor. I'm just not in love with it yet.

Sounds good, built well but....

By Joseph Colby from Boone, IA on March 12, 2024

Sounds great. The build quality is there. I'm literally taking two stars off because I have to buy a truss rod tool. This is a $ guitar with a gig bag and a special truss rod tool. You're not shipping it in a hard case...fine, I actually prefer gig bags. I wouldn't complain otherwise but you need a special barrel tool for the truss rod that isn't included. Just make it an Allen key or include the tool.

Not worth the money.

By Damaged Hearing from Mount Vernon, NY on August 28, 2022

I own a 414ce-r. And this guitar is so far from it. It's not even a good knock around guitar. Almost so cheaply made it should be called a side brand. No back brace. No gloss finish. A soft case. I found better guitars at half the price. With no case at all. But you can buy a cheap case, but not a cheap guitar.
