Koa: a touch of the islands
More than simply an exotic tonewood, koa is becoming a sought-after building material for distinctive high-end guitars from builders both big and boutique. Since the 1920s, guitar builders have crafted guitar backs, sides, and tops from this beautiful wood, which originates in Hawaii. In addition to its incredible looks, a koa top is valued for its balanced tone (which, depending on the side and back material, can provide everything from sparkling highs to warm, full sound). The hand-selected, figured koa used for this guitar's top complements its sound well, while looking as great as it plays.
Ovation's legacy
Two of the most distinctive features Ovation guitars have to offer are their rounded Lyrachord bodies and incredible built-in electronics. Back in the '70s, most acoustic players were stuck with a microphone in front of their guitars; it not only kept them from being mobile onstage - feedback could be a real problem. Ovation's use of piezo pickup technology and composite Lyrachord bodies, later combined with state-of-the-art onboard preamp systems, would allow acoustic guitarists to not only move freely onstage - they could cut through a live band mix easily, without fear of feedback.
