Supro '64 Super 1x8" 5-watt Tube Combo Amp Reviews
A reissue of Supro's iconic '60s-era 1 x 8-inch tube combo amplifier, the '64 Super was built for one purpose: no-frills tube tone. And when we say no frills, we mean it. The Supro Super '64 Super boasts a single volume knob — and that's it. Its red-hot, ECC83-based preamp feeds directly into a 6V6-equipped, single-ended 5-watt power amp that evokes Supro's pre-war origins. A top-notch Jensen C8R speaker rounds out this compact brute. If you want pure vintage Supro tone, the '64 Super packs a lot of tube-infused character into a compact guitar combo amplifier.

Great amp !!!
Own lots of solid state amps but not any tube amps...got this one just to see how different the tube sound would be from all my other amps...first of all i'll tell u that i love the clean sound out of it from my lp and for 5 watts its pretty loud for my living rum...!!! And...honestly...with todays technology the solidstate amps i have also are great at creating the tube sound and more...this amp is a keeper for me and i enjoy it however fender - boss & a few others can match (in my opinion) the tube sound quite well and give u a more variety of sounds...absolutely nothing negative about this amp i see...just depends what ur looking for...it does as advertised...
Tube amp glory!!
You want retro? You want tone? You want minimalistic? Then you want the Supro Super '64. This is my first tube amp and man did I choose well. From clean ringing notes to all the dirt you could want this amp delivers.
1606 super says it all super all around amp i love mine
i totally love this amp period. i got it and i left the genalex gold lion preamp tube but i did change out the power tube for a 60s blacktop us made 6v6 i had left from my fender champ days.this amp is very versatile with the volume set to 9 oclock or a hair less i add a little blues driver and a HOF reverb for nice quiet bedroom volume playing that really has that tube mojo at a volume i can watch tv and hear my guitar and my tv at the same time and at a volume that doesnt disturb anyone else in the house. takes humbuckers and single coil pickups equally well its only got a volume knob theres no eq to tweak to your guitar just turn it up to the volume you want and it sounds great. Very cool little amp mine is number 0204 an early one i saw they are shipping with jensen c8r s now and i figured for 40$ id give one a shot i thought the stock SS8 speaker sounded real good but this amp really shines with the jensen very wellspent 40$. ok i know some of you guys want to know will it play loud too and the answer is yes it will get loud 5 watts single ended class a will put off some serious volume for 5 watts and it breaks up nice and has a nice natural tube breakup with the volume at 12 o clock all the way to dimed i just play mine at a lower volume in my bedroom it sits nicely on one side of my computer desk and i can play and browse the net or watch tv on the computer and get a real honest to god good tube sound at a surprisingly low volume. if this one got stolen would definitely buy another one just like it
The One Knob Monster
Recently purchased from Sweetwater and man I am diggin' this little combo! I was in the market for a low wattage Tube Amp with a 6V6 or 6L6 in the power section and it came down between this or The '57 Champ. Now I absolutely love the tones of The 57 Champ but the price was a little out of reach. I bought this amp blind without seeing one in person or playing one it before hand and it was a breath of fresh air to hear crystal clear vintage cleans and gets quite dirty the farther the volume knob goes up!
This lil guy is pretty loud for a 5 watt Tube Amp with an 8 inch speaker! Way louder than my Bugera V5 infinium.
Let's talk some PROS and CONS
PROS:
Made in NY USA
Excellent Build quality
Heavy coming in at 26lbs for its size (Also a con)
Excellent 60's style cleans and just the right amount of break up
Jensen C8R speaker is welcomed over the older model's Supro Branded Speaker
Cabinet is made of Poplar and not ply wood or mdf
CONS
No Slip Cover included nor does Supro make one for this model
At this price point I would have liked to seen an Alnico speaker
Not hand wired like the 57 Champ
Stock Tubes are just OK and may change out for some Vintage NOS I have laying around
All in All it's a Fantastic Amp and I'm glad I rolled the dice on this. I still need to experiment with some pedals but I love the tone just from the amp. Since the amp is literally one knob it is extremely touch sensitive and picks up every nuance of your playing including the mistakes!! lol
Great Tone
I love this amp. I primarily play R&B, Blues, Smooth Jazz and this Supro delivers the tone. I turn it up about half way up, which is pretty clean, and use pedals to sculpt various overdrive sounds if needed, but mostly I play with just a bit of amp driven hair around the notes... and this amp does that well. To my ear is sounds best with single coils and P90's. Very usable grab and go for rehearsal or small gigs. If you need a small amp capable of delivering excellent clean to semi-clean tones at usable volumes, this one will get the job done. Very happy with this purchase.
Cool Little Amp
First of all, Supro has the look. The amp has a very cool retro vibe appearance that catches your eye. Its light and portable, small overall dimensions and fits in a compact space. The single volume control and hi / lo inputs are all you have to work with. I personally don't get much of a difference in sound out of the inputs. Volume is what you would expect out of a 5 watt amp with an 8 inch speaker. If you are going to pump lots of effects through this little gem, then it will come alive. Overall a cool amp but for the money in my opinion there's options out there to consider.
