Sabian HHX Redlight Crash Cymbal - 20 inches Reviews

20" Crash Cymbal Made from B20 Bronze

Upgrade your bronze’s studio personality and performance with Sabian’s HHX Redlight crash cymbal. Designed in conjunction with master timekeeper and Styx rhythm man, Todd Sucherman, this gorgeous cut of B20 bronze comes engineered for premier quality on record that sounds absolutely perfect under overheads. Its energy is a beautiful blend of Sabian’s Artisan series complexity and AAX series cut, resulting in a solid foundational palette that exudes dark, rich, and smokey tonal character with every strike. Sweetwater percussionists are also loving the crystalline top-end shimmer that complements its darker sound, adding a slightly more musical response that pairs wonderfully with its smooth under-stick feel. Best of all, when utilized in a configuration with other HHX Redlight crash sizes, the frequential interplay of these cymbals achieves stunning texturization for an enviably fluid wash across the kit.

Absolutely gorgeous 20” Crash Cymbal

By BigTarget52 from Central Texas
Music Background: Hobbiest, Not a boomer

After reviewing the Todd's AA and HHX 19" cymbals a few months ago, I can confirm they are amazing, and while this 20" model is also fantastic, there are a few nuances to consider. In a two-crash cymbal setup, this one might lean a bit too high-pitched when paired with the excellent 19" HHX Red Light crash, which led me to swap in the 18" HHX Red Light for a tonal better balance. It also works beautifully with the AA Spotlight 19" crash or a 19" HHXPlosion crash to offer a more complex and higher-pitched profile than my 20" HHXTreme crash. At 1938g, mine sits at a medium weight that likely contributes to that unexpected brightness, but it clearly demonstrates the successful vision Todd Sucherman and Sabian had for this line. While, to me, the 19" remains the standout of the series, the 19" needs something, a bit more low pitched to match its energy. All the high notes of TS and Sabian's formula are there, the smoke, the buttery feel, the complex tone, the big raw hammered bells; all the elements that make these special crash cymbals. The 20" is a versatile addition that shines in the studio and can flex into a live situation well IMO…paired with the 18" Red Light…chef's kiss. Perfect.
