By Steve from California

If you use high end ($) studio mics, this is the best preamp. And we tested 2 others. Highly recommend.

Real is still Real

By Mick N. from Westland, MI

Transformer Coupled Hardware is the bomb.
You have full control and monitoring of how hard you're driving the Transformers..
EQ is smooth and not harsh. It just simply makes everything sound better..
Run your old crusty In The Box Mix thru this and give it new life..

Sounds Great

By Top N. from Brooklyn, NY
Music Background: Recording, Mixing, Mastering

The 1073DPX sounds great.
This has taken my vocal recording chain to the next level.
I'm using the 1073 with my Neuman U87 microphone and compressing on the way in.
I have separate recording chains for Lead and background vocals with the two channels.
It gives vocals a certain smoothness, warmth, and clarity all at the time.
The 1073DPX is very different from plugin preamp modules.
This is likely the last vocal microphone preamp I'll need for a long while.
All that I've heard before about a real Neve 1073 is true.
Huge shoutout to Mike Picotte for always getting me the right gear.

Serious Mojo

By Sweetwater Customer

While there is no longer a digital option for this unit, it delivers in every way what is expected of a 1073. Immediate warmth and creamy presence. Vox and guitars almost sound compressed in a very good way. Kick and snare are full and fat. Overheads are tamed by a bit of subtractive eq allowing much of the job to be handled on the way in. Using the eq to reduce is the real power and reason to have the eq. No issues with using ribbons. The monitoring options and ability to place outboard inserts pre or post eq is really cool opening up more sound shaping possibilities. The headphone out is mostly useful for DI signals unless highly isolating headphones are used. It helps getting eq set for sounds that aren't bleeding from room into ears. This is the most expensive and badass toy I have in my home studio. A once in a lifetime splurge that will lose little value over time. Enjoying every minute!

Sounds great but clearly has quality control issues

By Dan from D

First unit that arrived had one loose knob for controlling the highs. Everything else had a nice stiffer rotation making it easier to dial in exactly what I wanted. The loose one I could get it to move half way by swiping it with my finger.

No problem, sweetwater replaced it. 2nd unit. Same issue on opposite channel.

So I figured at this point, it's just quality control. Also, can't open the top to either of them without stripping the screws because they are in so tight.

While I am upset about the fact units of this value are so hit or miss and something I have to "accept" for what it is.

They do still sound really good. I am not sure of anything else that will sounds as good for price point. I have looked and I wish RND made the same unit because their quality appears to be much better overall and they come with 3 year warranty as opposed to one.

They are also much faster with their support. AMS took over a week, and they told me to fill out a form. Which I did and nothing heard from them since.

So I am concerned if I will ever have issues down the road with it since the quality control is such an issue. Idk, I love the sound, just wish they were better produced.

There's a space waiting for you....:o)

By Daryl L. from Mt. Rainier, MD

Just ordered my 2nd Neve 1073DPX this morning! Yesterday, I was tracking percussion with 2 Neumann KM184s --> Neve 1073DPX --> Focusrite Red 3 (very light compression) into UA Apollo x16.
PERFECTION.
Sounded so natural, so real. Nailed it with capturing the sonics of the Congas. I had to track a few other percussion elements, but I didn't want to move the mics LOLOL, as we're also going to track today.

So yup, ordered another one. It's the right thing to do.

In the meantime, I have a lot of great mics & preamps in my hybrid studio. However, when there's a particular sound you want on a certain song, nothing else will do. I compared this with my Neumann, API & SSL preamps (which all sounded amazing), but the Neve just sat better. We dialed in some EQ to make the congas a bit beefier (we were doing a Go Go track (this is DC, after all lol)) and it CRANKED!

Simply put, this is such a versatile, musical, technical piece of equipment that brings your sonic art to reality.
I'm a believer. Which is why I'm INVESTING in another one!

Looking forward to seeing that Sweetwater Box coming in a few days!
Thanks to my Sweetwater rep, Frank Gerdts, for always making the purchase go through!

You have one very happy customer. Waiting, (im)patiently for the 1073DPX to come join it's twin brother in the rack I've prepared for him. ;o)

Respect,

The secret power that resides within Neve gear is not just hype, it's real. If you're looking for a very noticeable difference in your sound with a wide range of musicality in the knobs look no further. Best bang for your buck if you're in search of the infamous Golden Age sound to bring your music to the next level. To whomever is thinking about grabbing one of these, DO IT!

Perfect Analog Front End For My Studio

By Russell from Ottawa ON
Music Background: Songwriter/producer/engineer

I've used UAD plugins for years but as my production studio is gaining traction/more clients, thought it was time to invest in an analog front end. Did a ton of research and purchased a Neumann M149, running into the 1073DPX and side chained to a UBK Fatso. Amazing and simple front end...this pre blows UAD unison 1073 and 1084 out of the water when driven...that 1073 sound that I could never get from the plugin. Not too mention, this is a ton of horsepower for the price when considering it's two channels with EQ. Wanted two channels so I could run stereo VST's and busses through this and the Fatso to 'analog' up the sound...works amazing for that task as well!

Once a classic always a classic

By Johny B. from LC
Music Background: Music Producer

After owning some of the newer Rupert Neve Designs mic preamps, I can trully say the 1073DPX blew everyone away here. AMS is now building a lot of the essential parts in-house, closer than ever to the vintage units. And boy, does it make a difference! I am definitely selling my Porticos, and I am seriously considering selling the Shelford preamps too... IT IS THAT GOOD! Compliments to the folks at AMS NEVE! Bravo!
