Fender Yosemite Stratocaster 3-piece Pickup Set - Aged White Reviews

Stratocaster Pickup Set with Alnico II and Alnico IV Magnets - Aged White

There’s been lots of chatter about the stellar tone of Fender’s American Performer Stratocasters. Well, now you can inject your Strat with the same coveted sound. This trio of Yosemite single-coil pickups delivers increased output, thanks to flat-staggered pole pieces, while a mixture of Alnico II and Alnico IV magnets and plain enamel-coated wire ensure an expressive, well-defined sound that’s both musical and dynamic. Beyond that, shellac coating keeps feedback to a minimum, while a reverse-wound/reverse-polarity (RWRP) middle pickup takes hum out of the equation. At Sweetwater, we’ve dialed in everything from chimey, glassy cleans to chunky grind with Yosemite pickups — the best of classic and modern tones. Rich, articulate, and uncompromising, this Yosemite Stratocaster Pickup Set is a must-have upgrade for your Strat.

Great replacement pickup set

By Matthew Sainopulos from Jersey City, NJ on April 22, 2023

I bought these to install in a stock 2012 MIM standard Strat. The results were startling. It went from sounding close to a Strat to delivering everything you could want sonically. I'm still a novice player but I was able to coax all of the tones you think of when a Stratocaster is mentioned and the price point is nicely in the lower end of the available alnico offerings. As an added plus the aged white cover color is almost a perfect match for the parchment pick guard and adding the same color knobs and switch tip made the guitar look worlds classier (the original covers and knobs were bright white in the parchment guard).

Awesome Alternative Pickups

By Steve L. from Kentucky on August 24, 2022 Music Background: Retired, but still rockin!

I already had experience with the Yosemite pickups in a Fender Performer Strat I purchased a couple years ago. They are not the traditional voiced Strat pickups that are upper mid to high frequency focused. They have more bottom end and mid tones to them. They are great for foggy blues through 80's hard rock and early metal but will also add body to your cleans. When I recently bought a new Player Strat from Sweetwater, I also ordered these pickups to upgrade because they're exactly the tone I want out of a contemporary Stratocaster. Many thanks to Sweetwater and my sales engineer, Jim Ridings, for the exemplary customer service I always get from them.

Great Sound

By Ron from Alabaster, AL on April 30, 2021 Music Background: moderate

I put these in a custom build that has a genuine Fender body and a Mighty Mite neck. These have a great sound. They have the perfect balance I was looking for. I like the warm lows and the balanced highs. I play mostly 60's type music, country, soft rock, and these fit the bill perfectly.

Great pickups

Installed in my MIM strat and love them. The bridge pickup is a little bright but can roll the tone back and darken it up a little. Very satisfied!

Tried several and chose the Yosemite

By Uncle Bob from Memphis on September 1, 2020 Music Background: crappy self delusioned

Fender Robert Cray hardtail matched with Warmoth custom neck.

I swapped out a few different Fender and Seymour Duncan sets and felt I still was not quite where I wanted to be. I took a chance on the then newly released Yosemites (8-9 months ago maybe?) that I paid $... for. Since the install, they've never left the guitar and I seem to have lost all the "I wonder if..." regarding other pickups for this guitar. I love it when that happens!

Yosemite pickups are incredibly versatile.

By Walter R Morris from Massachusetts on August 10, 2020

I recently put Yosemite pickups in a strat. I am amazed by the range and sustain they have. Sharp high end fat middle solid lows
It's like a well bred mix between the Fat 50s and the 57 62 pickups.

Definitely recommend over MiM stock pups

By Travis from Reno NV on August 8, 2020

Love these, very low noise even on the single settings. The alnico ii's in the bridge have a nice vintage twang that sets them apart from the other two.

nice upgrade

By Sweetwater Customer on July 13, 2020

I bought these to upgrade my Bullet strat. The pickups sound great and I am pleased with this upgrade. I think they are well worth the cost. Great service from Sweetwater also.

Quacky,Chimey,Great...

By MARC on July 5, 2019 Music Background: Hobbyist

I was a little skeptical of the claims made about these pickups until I got a set.I honestly like them better than the 69 set they replaced.I tried them thru a POD first and found them a little harsh, however the next day I played thru a Blues Junior and they sounded Great !!. Very quacky on 2 and 4 positions.Neck and middle had very useful tones also.Bridge position was a little to bright for me,but still sounded good.Get U Some.

Fender listened to the players.

By Will Ross from Indian Trail, NC on June 22, 2019 Music Background: Professional touring musician.

In this day and age when you may need a Strat to get you through every genre of music possible..... Fender listened. Nowadays, we live in an era of unity between the classic styled guitars of our grandparents and the Red Bull fueled modern fire breathing dragons of Pop, Rock, and Metal. These pickups will appeal to everyone except Metal players, who don't often play Strats. Hendrix, Clapton? Sure. Coldplay, SRV, John Mayer? Oh yes, these are what you want. The shellac really cuts down on noise. These are as quiet as my lace sensors. That's a huge compliment btw. Get these while they are affordable.

great-sounding pickup set

By Brannon from Indiana on May 2, 2019 Music Background: pro / worship leader

I just put a set of these in my 80s MIJ strat - MASSIVE tonal improvement over the cheapie set that was in there. I didn't realize how "un-stratty" my Strat actually sounded until I installed these. I chose this set after being pretty blown away by the American Performer series Strats and Teles last time I visited the Sweetwater showroom - I immediately started researching the pickups they're putting in that new line, and found the Yosemites (good job, Tim Shaw!) and was pleasantly surprised they were priced so affordably as well. Super versatile, not to quiet and "vintagey" but not to hot and modern either - they're like goldilocks pickups: just right. The Tele pickups will blow you away as well.

Awesome pickups

Great service from a Sweetwater, at a great price. These Yosemite pickups turned a "98 Squire into, well, a real Fender!

THEY PUT THESE IN THE AMERICAN PERFORMER STRAT - NUFF SAID!

By KENNY HOWELL from Illinois on April 3, 2019 Music Background: EXPERIENCED

PUT THIS SET INTO A SQUIER CONTEMPORARY STRAT THAT I JUST TRADED A TELE FOR AND THESE MAKE IT SOUND VINTAGE TO MY EARS. JUST WHAT MY GOAL WAS. I GOT THE OCEAN
BLUE METALLIC ONE AND INSTALLED THESE INTO A FENDER BLUE MOTO/PEARLOID PICKGUARD
AND OH SO SWEET THE LOOK AND SOUND. HAD A SET OF WHITE PICKUP COVERS AND KNOBS AND THEY REALLY SET OFF THE BLUE PEARLOID GUARD. THESE PUPS ARE AS ADVERTISED. THEY SOUND VERY BALANCED AND SEEM TO HAVE THAT STRAT QUACK. I WAS LOOKING AT THE
TEX MEX STRAT PICKUPS WHEN I JUST SO HAPPEN TO STUMBLE ON TO THESE AND I DON'T REGRET IT. THE ONES I GOT HAD THE POLE PIECES PRETTY MUCH FLUSH WITH THE TOP OF THE HOLES IN THE PICKUP COVERS WHICH I LIKE BECAUSE YOU CAN ADJUST THE PICKUP CLOSER TO THE STRINGS COMPARED TO THE ONES WITH STAGGERED POLE PIECE HEIGHT. ALSO, THE YOSEMITE'S USE ALNICO II AND ALNICO IV MAGNETS WHICH SEEM TO HAVE LESS STRING PULL AS COMPARED TO OTHER PICKUPS THAT USE ALNICO V MAGNETS THAT HAVE MORE MAGNETIC PULL ON THE STRINGS CAUSING LESS SUSTAIN AND NOTE ARTICULATION.

BETTER GET A SET BEFORE THE PRICE GOES UP. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

YOSEMITE = Awesome Pickups

By Fast Eddie from Westminster, CO on February 27, 2019

After doing some research on the American Performer guitars I noticed that the sound from them was absolutely amazing!! So I found the pickups by name YOSEMITE and found them here at Sweetwater. I decided to give them a try. I am truly blown away with the vintage strat sound!! The alnico 4's are great clean and with overdrive. I can honestly say that these pups have given new life to a 30+ year old guitar. Highly Recommended!!

Nice upgrade for your MIM

By Philly from California on April 12, 2021 Music Background: Soul, R&B, Funk

Nicely priced upgrade to the standard ceramics of your MIM strat. Classic fender tone, with a touch of something different using alnico IV and II. Exceptionally quiet for single coils too!

They could shorten some of the wire lengths to help with ease of routing, and i found they sounded a little muddy in position 4. Some more adjusting and eq may help that. Overall, highly recommend for the price.

Well Balanced Tone Monsters

By Peter from Milwaukee on November 22, 2020

I have a set of Yosemite pickups in a player series Strat, and I believe these are one of the better sets available in this price range. Most genres of music can be comfortably covered, and they sound good clean and overdriven. If you need a replacement set or are looking to upgrade Squier or other stock sets I'd recommend the Yosemite pickups, no question.

Yosemite Pickups in Squier Affinity Strat

By SL from Rhode Island on July 16, 2020 Music Background: Guitarist, less than a year

These pickups are much better than the stock pickups in a Squier Affinity Strat. The pickups were color coded and came with all the installation hardware. I also installed a Mojotone Solderless Harness, so I can't comment on how they interact with the original wiring. The neck, neck+middle, and middle positions were almost unusable from being too muddy and bass heavy with the stock pickups, and you could forget getting any clarity if you used gain on a stock Affinity. Now, I actually like the gain sounds, and all the positions are usable and distinct. I was worried that the bridge pickup wouldn't be bright enough being Alnico 2 instead of Alnico 5, but it's just bright enough, and the neck and middle pickups are great, too

I'd say if your Strat is a little too bright or a little harsh, these pickups should fix that. Also the flat magnet stagger on these is way better for string volume balance. Thanks again, Sweetwater

These offer a great sound and reduce problems with Fender Player series

By T.B. from Chicago on June 7, 2020 Music Background: In popular local bands in the early 2000's

I swapped out my Fender Player pickups due to warble caused by the offset pole pieces of the retro pickup designed. These pickups really helped! They also offer more tonal variety. At first I thought, wow these new pickups don't sound as bright as the originals. However, I soon found that it actually brought up the low and mids offering more tonal options when combined with an EQ.

Very good Fender pickups

By Allen Bessanson from FLORENCE, AZ on August 27, 2019 Music Background: Weekend Warrior

I'm very pleased with these pickups. Installed in my Fender Strat/Tele Hybrid, really am impressed with the tone. After changing-out the neck to a Fender Deluxe with compound radius (9.5-14") I wanted a flat magnet stagger for even string-to-string volume balance. I can raise them up higher too and keep the tone I like. They sound really-really good, best value right now for Fender pickups I think. Ben Porter is and has been a fantastic rep for me, can't go wrong at Sweetwater!

Yosemite pickups

By Sweetwater Customer on March 13, 2023

I bought a set of these and I didn't like them at all, my problem with them seemed to be in the way they responded to pick attack as even digging in they just seemed to me to be lacking in some way, hard to describe but they also seemed to be a bit harsh or shrill to my ears , to me there are so many sets I like better and I sent them back , a few of my recommended sets would be Tex Mex , Texas specials , 57/62 ….even a used set of the players series alnico 5s I find sound better , just not a fan of the Yosemite ones

Yosemite Strat Pickups

By JT Caccavo on March 16, 2023 Music Background: Professional

I bought a set of three Yosemite Strat pickups in late November 2019. The shipping was fast, and great. I stored the pickups new in the box in my apartment for a few years. I finally got around to installing them on a beater Strat. The neck and middle pickup sounds good, the bridge pickup was dead as a doornail. There must be a break somewhere in the windings as I'm getting no signal whatsoever across the red & black. I tried switching the yellow middle pickup wiring with the red bridge wire to confirm that it wasn't a bad switch (new switch). It's definitely a dead pup with no resistance reading. I put a JB Jr in the bridge for now, but I'm not thrilled with the way the middle Yosemite sounds with the JB. If they're willing to replace the dead pup, I'll re-review these pickups. I realize that 3 years is a long time to wait to try these, but they were safely stored new in the box, in a consistent comfortable studio environment, and not exposed to any kind of conditions that might damage anything. That bridge pup was DOA. Quality control matters.

D.O.A.

By Sweetwater Customer on August 18, 2023

The Yosemite bridge pup was completely dead out of the box. I put a Seymour Duncan Humbucker in the bridge position. It sounds good by itself, but does not blend well at all with the Yosemite neck, and/or middle pup. Wasted money, time, effort, and a guitar I don't play.
