New to tape wounds

By Dan from Kansas City area on November 30, 2022 Music Background: semi-professional musician

I bought these to go on an Ibanez acoustic bass. I'm impressed with these strings. I didn't like the the original round wound strings that came on it. They were too noisy and I didn't care for the rough texture on my fingers.

Next I tried flat wound strings. The finger feel was great, but the tone was a little too "thumpy" and dull, and there was a volume difference between each string.

These Fender tape wounds are the solution I was looking for. Bright tone without being harsh, smooth finger feel, and an even volume and tone balance between strings. I'm going to try a set on my electric bass next.

Great, but know what they are!

I think these are great, but you should be clear on what they are. I thought they were flat nylon tapewound, like the nylon LaBellas. What they are instead is roundwound strings, with a thin nylon coating. So they actually sound more like roundwounds than flatwounds. A little less trebley, but on a scale of brightness, with flatwounds being 1 and roundwounds being 10, these are like a 7.

The big difference with these strings is that they cut out most of the fret buzz and fretting hand noise, much more than they cut treble. So if fret noise bothers you, but you want to keep most of the roundwound tone, these could be ideal. They are also much easier on the fingers, and a little smoother for picking.

Personally, I ended up not using them on my regular basses, because I either want the full roundwound sound, or I want the full flatwound sound. But they found a good use on my fretless. The fingerboard on my fretless scrapes easily. These strings let me keep a pretty much roundwound sound on the fretless, without chewing up the fingerboard. (I think these strings are even easier on the fingerboard than traditional flatwounds.)

Most excellent!

By David Moore from Nashville, TN on October 15, 2019

I got these with some reservation as I had used other such strings of other brands. None seemed to have a decent balance of upper & lower tone. These surprised me big time. Minor preamp tone adjustments did the job with these smooth sounding babies. I highly recommend these for a great thick, smooth sound.
PS: These are very easy on the fingers!

Best Strings I Have Ever Used.

By Mia on March 18, 2019

These strings are perfect for me! I love the way they look on my bass, and they're incredibly easy to play on. They sound 100% perfect, and I plan on using these again in the future!

Not for Everybody

By Sweetwater Customer on April 12, 2018

I used these kind of strings over 45 years ago and liked them. Jump forward to now and I still love them but they are not for everybody. I like the feel and the warm tone for what I do.

perfect for me

By frrazz from Tampa FL on November 7, 2014 Music Background: semi-pro musician

I went thru 20 years of trying out one or another set of strings on my old maple-neck/natural-body p-bass. None were any better than 'pretty good'. Then I played a friend's old recording Gibson with these black nylon strings. Seemed to have a nice feel, so I tried some on the p-bass. Wow: after a little fine-tuning setup it was like another instrument! The soft strings and thin neck combine to give a very supple feel that fits well with my 4 finger picking style. They have a nice round sound (good for me but some might like more bite). The last set has been going great for 4 years (~3 hr/week playing) but is finally showing some age.

Best tape wound strings one can purchase. Have tried them all. Great sound and comfortable on the fingertips. If playing with a pick they want last long. Had to wait for months until they were in stock. Worth the wait. This is the second set I have used on my bass. These are my go to strings now.

Fendeer Bass 58 Strings

By William on February 14, 2018 Music Background: Bass Bass player, sound tech/producer for praise and worship at church.

After trying 5 different types (1 flat taped heavy gauge, 1 steel round wounds, 2 types of medium tape round wounds, and 1 light round with polymer coating ) types/brands of strings these are meeting my requirements. Low deep mellow sound with good punch. Play very well and smooth to the fingers. They have locked in on holding tune within the first hour of playing. Rating a 4 as it is too soon to see if they will hold up in the long run.

Bass strings

By Franklin Sisson on March 1, 2023 Music Background: 55 years in the music business

They are round wound strings with a black tape coating, some what quieter than regular round strings, but not what I would buy again. My original intention was for flat wound strings with a tape wound coating but what I got was what you sent me. Someone didn't read the label on the box correctly, before shipping and I ended up using them. I'm sure it won't happen again.
