Best Flats I've Tried

By Michael from USA on November 9, 2023 Music Background: Gigging Bass Player

When I got my first fretless (Fender Player Series Jazz Bass, I bought a few different brands of flats to try out on them. These strings, at least to my ears, sounded better than the other two sets I tried. They also seemed to have good response up and down the fingerboard. On the other two there were certain notes that seemed a little muted with not as much sustain. Not so with these strings. I like them a lot, and the price is right. I'd recommend them.

Carol Kaye sound

By Bill Young from Live Oak FL on June 7, 2023 Music Background: Old school musician & producer

Recently switched my vintage Fender Jazz bass from roundwound strings to Fender flatwounds and love the tone without rolling off. I run the bass wide open and sometimes even play with a pick to get that 60s sound.
Still have Rotosound Swing 66 on the Rickenbacker.

Flatwound Bargain

By JKF from NC on January 6, 2023

I play flatwounds exclusively, and have tried many. These have been on my #1 gigging bass for the past year. They stand out for their price, feel, sound and durability.

These are excellent strings. They don't have the fat mids of some other flats, like La Bella DTBs, instead, they have more highs and a more relaxed feel. The low E has a slightly lower tension than most comparable sets of strings. I like that because I feel that it sounds and intonates better, but I can see some people wanting a more uniform feel.

These darken with age, but not that fast. Mine are about a year old, and still have some nice high end. If you want dark, back off the tone. They're very versatile strings. If you're familiar with D'Addario Chromes, these aren't identical, but they sound and feel similar. For whatever reason, I think that the Fenders sound and feel just a touch more supple than the equivalent Chromes.

Great strings.

A surprisingly good set

By Jeremy from Huntsville al on November 30, 2022

Nice slightly bright tone. Easy on the fingers Got a set when they were on sale a month ago and was impressed. Will buy again.

Good strings

Had Labella flats on my jazz bass. Sounded good but i like these better. Easier to play, good tone.. 50-100 gauge. Good price.

Perfect .. "Just what the Doctor Ordered"!!

By John Andersen from Santa Rosa, CA on June 14, 2020 Music Background: Gigging Musician

So I am actually a guitar player, but with all our gigs having been canceled, I have spent a lot of time recording which means I play "all the parts"!
I decided to try some "Flats" on my P Bass and tried a set of Fender 50's.
WOW ... What a difference ....
1). EZ on the fingers
2). Fuller recorded sound (DI to PreSonus 192 or Series lll 16R)
3). String Noise is gone!!
4). "Smoooooooooth".. LOL

Really nice sounding, mellow flats

By xrayex from Pa. on January 3, 2019 Music Background: semi-pro

After using a few different brands of flatwounds (D'Addario chromes, Rotosound Jazz 77's and GHS) over time and not being overly satisfied with any of them, I grabbed a set of these on the fly. These Fender flatwounds really surprised me. They're warm and mellow sounding and they really respond well to different "touches" and pressures. I've been using these as my flats of choice, almost exclusively (other than for short scale basses) for the last couple of years. Very expressive strings and very easy on the wallet. Give 'em a try.

Smooth Sounding Strings

By Steve Micklin from Shelby, Mi. on October 16, 2017 Music Background: Semi-Pro

Really preferred medium heavy but decided to try these. Very smooth sound and the mediums do seem to give me a bit more punch particularly up the neck. They feel great on the fingers and are very responsive. Also can get a good growl if you hit 'em hard!

silky finger delights

By Daniel Ogier from burbank, CA on December 31, 2014 Music Background: Hobbyist

Hey, I love these strings. Better finger feel and tone IMO than the Rotosounds that I have played. My only complaint is that I can't get these with a 105 bottom string. Just a little thicker and maybe drop D tuning wouldn't get floppy.

Smooth

Flat wind is smooth and full. Retains punch and definition too! Easy on fingers.

Good Flatwound Bang For The Buck

By Shadi Frick from Carbondale, IL USA on February 3, 2015 Music Background: Recording Engineer, Musician, Educator

I generally use D'Addario Chromes, but these are an inexpensive substitute that are mellow and work just fine.

Sometimes you get lucky

By gary from Kansas City, Mo on December 26, 2012 Music Background: Hobbyist

I'm very much a novice bass player, and was hoping a flatwound string would give me more enthusiasm regarding practicing....that's exactly what has happened....my bass guitar is both easier to play and has a better tone than it had with the strings (regular wound) that came with it...

Eh

By Sweetwater Customer on February 10, 2022

I got some of these today expecting a nice mellow sound, but what I got was an extremely punchy and bright sound. It just sounds like metal, and I don't mean the music… actual metal. If you want that tone then they're good but they do not sound like flatwounds in the slightest.
