Martin 0012-28 Modern Deluxe Acoustic Guitar - Natural Reviews
Martin's 0012-28 Modern Deluxe is a refreshing take on the classic "double-O" body style, blending old-world style with modern refinements. Its spruce Vintage Tone System (VTS) top has been torrefied for maximum projection and harmonic excitement. The dovetail neck joint reinforces the classic Martin tone. And with its European flamed maple binding, gold frets, gold open-gear tuners, and unique 1930s-style logo on the headstock, the 0012-28 Modern Deluxe looks unlike anything else from Martin’s production line. Complete with other modern advancements and a Vintage Deluxe neck shape designed for maximum comfort, there’s a lot to love about the Martin 0012-28 Modern Deluxe acoustic guitar.

Early in 2022, when Martin disclosed the expansion of their modern deluxe line of guitars, I was interested in the 0012-28 model. I have a OM-28 MD and it's one of my best guitars, so I was very excited to get my hands on this 00 12 fret model. What I didn't know was how long I'd be waiting. When I finally got the call the day after Christmas my wait was finally over. This will be my initial review that I will update in 6 months or so.
After giving the package time to accumulate to my home, it was time to get my first look. Wood selection is top notch, some of the nicest looking rosewood I've seen, much nicer than the OM-28MD. Sitka top is tight grained, very uniform appearance, the VTS treatment hasn't left darker areas.
The nut is cut really well, no adjustment will be needed, frets are level, well beveled edges, polished smooth. The relief is ok, checked at 0.010" I'll take some of this relief out on my first string change, likely adjusting the action a bit as well which checks 0.095" at the 12th fret.
The neck shape is a nice soft C, I like the string spacing at the nut 1 13/16, and 2 1/4 at the saddle, the neck thickness might be a bit thinner, but I seemed to adapt well, my preference is a modified V with standard taper. This will be interesting over time how the neck shape effects my playing style and hand fatigue.
Waverly tuners are my personal preference, and these are very nice, with very smooth adjustments.
First few chords, and songs I played revealed a classic Martin tone, with significant sustain. Knowing this is only going to improve over time is very exciting.
I'm looking forward to putting this awesome guitar through its paces, my finger style technique will be well suited to this guitar.
Buying experience with Sweetwater was amazing as always, thanks again Chris for your continued support over the last 8 years.
