Martin 000Jr-10 Acoustic Guitar - Natural Reviews

6-string Acoustic Guitar with Spruce Top, Sapele Back and Sides, Hardwood Neck, and Richlite Fingerboard - Natural

From the stage to the beach, the Martin 000Jr-10 acoustic is an on-the-go picker's dream come true. This comfortable mini delivers iconic Martin 000 visuals and sonics in a smaller form factor — one that's not only great to travel with, but easy to learn on as well. The X-braced spruce top on sapele back and sides blooms to life with warmth and depth at every pick stroke. Notes ring out with harmonic richness and bell-like clarity that belie the 000Jr-10's reduced size.

Extremely Pleased

By Jay on December 29, 2023 Music Background: Middle-aged beginner player

Probably the greatest Christmas gift anyone ever gave me. I'm in my 40s learning to play guitar for the first time and I'm absolutely in love with the sound of this guitar. I know some people find the sound of the Monel strings off putting but to my ear they sound extremely natural, warm, and just cozy. The smaller size allows me to play comfortably in variety of seating positions. While it may be a smaller instrument it plays plenty loud with lots of ring. It's more mid-range focused with a lovely timbre. I adore the tone this guitar, and I hope to enjoy it for years to come. I had a fantastic experience purchasing from Sweetwater, guitar arrived safe and secure, no issue with the set-up or the condition of the instrument. When I'm ready for a full-size Martin I'll be ordering it from Sweetwater.

Great little guitar

By John Lacombe from STONE MOUNTAIN, GA on December 29, 2023

I have a DJR and loved it so i decided to get the 000-JR also.
At first I did not like it but decided to keep it and it grew on me and now its really the only acoustic I play
This little guitar is easy to hold and plays and sounds great and I will never let it go.
The big boys just sit in the case, then I decided on an all Sapele version
I Like the 000 shape so much I ordered the 000-10 cause I don't like the cutaway or the ugly white spots on the newer versions.
It's little bigger but still a short scale with a 1 3/4 nut and the Sapele should be brighter than my 000-15m.
I am excited.
Thanks Sweetwater and Scott.

Great for a beginner

By Matthew from Seattle on December 7, 2023 Music Background: Beginner at guitar

I've been learning to play the electric guitar. But I wanted to have an acoustic that I could just pick up and practice without having to plug into an amp. I had an old Fender F-65, which was a decent guitar, but it was too much for me at my current skill level. So I sold the Fender and bought this Martin. With the shorter, but wider, fret board, it's so much easier to play than my Fender. It's not quite as easy to fret as my electric, but with the shorter fretboard, it's actually a bit easier to each the frets. And it's easy enough that I was able to pick it up and immediately play. It's also much more comfortable to wrap an arm around.

I also considered the Taylor GS Mini. Those are extremely popular guitars, this Martin less so. But unlike the GS mini, it's all solid wood construction, has a binding around the body and an inlay around the sound hole. It just generally looks nicer, and all that despite being a couple of hundred dollars less than the comparable Taylor.

The sound is very warm - less crisp highs like you hear on the GS mini spruce top models, but more pronounced highs than the mahogany top GS mini. I find it a very balanced tone that I think will be good for both strumming and picking. I've heard the strings that Martin puts on these is a factor in that sound, however. And in any case, the sound is very subjective - everyone's taste is different.

Wonderful 3/4 guitar!

By John from DC on June 13, 2023

I love this guitar! I was playing guitars that were too large for me. I'll only buy 3/4 sizes.

Great little guitar

By Johnny from Stone Mountain on May 24, 2023 Music Background: Just for fun

I have many acoustic guitars including 5 Martins (including this one).
I got this as a novelty, and because I have the DJR and liked it so much.
The last few years Guitar Center never has in stock when you want it so I went too Sweetwater.
Sweetwater was great (thanks Scott!)and the whole process was A+.
At first I did not like the guitar but decided to keep it.
But it has really grown on me and is now the guitar I pick up and use to write with.
This is a wonderful little guitar I highly recommend it, it small easy to hold and play and just sounds so good.
Johnny

Finally !

When I put five stars on this guitar right under it gives meaning to the stars. Five stars say it's the best. Ok while the guitar is not the best guitar you can buy obviously compared to the ones I played in its class and a couple even above it's class, I give it five stars. Yes, I would have bought the Martin 000-15 if the neck were slightly wider. I did have the Martin 000-12e which I did not keep. I just didn't hit it off with this one. I also thought it was over priced. These are all of course my opinion. Gibson G-00. I love Gibson's I have a CL-40 and love it. Problem with G-00 was the neck also narrow for my hands. Played Taylor GS mini. They are very nice but again neck size and also the smaller scale seemed to small.

Which brought me to the Martin 000 junior. Perfect neck size,1 3/4 very easy to play and has very nice projection. Some of the Martins in this price range are not made out of wood, I guess they call it HPL. What ever it is it is. The junior is supposedly solid wood and it sounds really nice. I ordered this model rather than the 000e because I will install a K&K pickup which will sound better than the stock pickup.

The other thing I would recommend is a set-up before having it shipped out. This makes a world of difference and is worth the extra $$ Of course you can do it yourself if you know how. Thanks Sweetwater just mail me the check...Seriously I had it done, they set it up to my specifications and it just takes a couple extra days before it's shipped out. It makes a big difference and IMO is well worth it. Finally the Sweetwater card 0 percent interest can't be beat.

Love this Guitar!

By Keith Godfrey from Brooklyn, NY on September 7, 2022

I love this martin, it's a great guitar. The woodgrain is so nice and the tone is beautiful. Great quality for the price! My main purpose for writing this review though is about a case. It was very difficult to find a hardcase. After months of searching i've found it fits in the Breedlove concerntina hardcase. So if you're in the same situation I was check that one out!

This One Is A Keeper

By BoxCar Joe from NY on August 28, 2022 Music Background: Long time player.

It took me a long time to understand that I like small guitars. And it took a lot of trial and error before I got to this one. But this is it. This is the one.

First off it's pretty as a new penny. I couldn't find a flaw and I looked very closely.

The setup is very good, but I will tinker with things in time (I always do). But it's very playable as is right out of the box. Fret ends are a little sharp but I've seen much worse.

The neck shape and width is perfect for me and the scale length is also perfect.

And what a sound! I love the Retro Monel strings it's strung with and they really are the right choice. This guitar sings.

This one is a keeper.

What a cool little guitar!

By Shawn Buckwalter from CONESTOGA, PA on January 28, 2022 Music Background: Guitar player/teacher

I have been playing and teaching guitar for over 50 years. Now two of my grandkids are beginning to learn... I decided to give them Martin 000Jr-10's, based on the shorter/smaller scale, the solid woods, and Martin's rep for great guitars. At this price point, this guitar is awesome in every way. Feels good, and sounds unbelievable for its size. My advise - Get one...! You will love it.

Fun, fun, fun Martin 000 Junior 10

By JJ from Bend, Oregon on January 20, 2022 Music Background: Hobbyist, and occasional gigging muso

I have been playing the 000 jr the last couple of weeks for 2-3 hours each day. I am usually a die hard Taylor fan but have owned a few Martins over the years as well. I have also owned 2 GS minis (spruce and Mahogany tops) but quickly tired of the tight feeling finger board and the lack of bass tones. I have also owned 2 Larrivee Parlor (P-V09 and PV-05). The Larrivees played great but we're a bit too boxy sounding to me. This Martin neck is comparable to the $2K Larrivee but with a more balanced tone. I love this small Martin after a slight shave of the saddle and half a turn to tighten the truss rod which, together, brought the action down to where it is easy to play and has no string buzz. The strings are a bit noisy and a touch dead sounding but that is an easy fix.The guitar is very well balance and really comfy. My arthritic hands really appreciate the playability which I never achieved on the GS mini. I also installed a K&K mini pickup (my personal favorite) which sounds stellar and really reveals just how balanced the tone is. To sum it up- great sweetwater service, best smaller guitar I have played to date! Thank you Kevin at Sweetwater

GREAT LITTLE GUITAR! SHOULD OPEN UP NICELY ONE DAY.

By Bill from Seaford , NY on November 12, 2021 Music Background: 10 YEAR PLAYING

I was torn between the D Jr and 000Jr. Since I own a 2002 HD-28 figured I would go with the other body style in the Jr series. Also checked out the Taylor GS mini very nice also the finish is better but the all solid wood Martin makes more sense in the long run. The guitar will age better and open up. Just need to get the guitar properly set -up the action is fine at the cowboy chord area but lower down the neck is high action. Other than that great sounding loud little guitar. Easy to play on the couch or on an arm chair the arms do not get in the way.Make sure you keep it humidified being solid wood and all.

How sweet and lovable this 000Jr is!!!

By Johnathan Bonham from Rockledge, FL on July 16, 2021

I wanted a smaller inexpensive guitar to travel with during weekend hotel getaways with my wonderful wife.
Little did I know what an injustice it would be to reserve this little Martin just for weekend trips, its just delightful to play.
I wasn't sure I'd like the retro strings, but they suit the 000Jr to a tee! The short scale length makes for easy bends while playing blues, and the wonderful tones from such a small bodied guitar are impressive. The retro strings no doubt tone down the high end treble often associated with small bodied guitars and the 000JR sings with a distinctive voice all of its own emphasized by its shorter scale length.
For me, its a perfect finger picking guitar. The 1.75" nut width wont suit all, but over the years I've gravitated from 1 11/16 because it suits me so much better.
Fret work is good for a guitar in this price range, with no sharp ends for me to clean up. All I needed to do was give them a good polish for smoother, slicker bends. Adjusting the truss rod isn't easy, a long wrench is needed because the adjusting nut is very recessed and mine was delivered with a little too much relief.
No tinkering of the action needed otherwise though, it left Martin's plant well set. After correcting the excessive forward bow over a few days the action at the 12th fret is 6/64 on the 6th string and 4/64 on the first string - just the way I like it for an acoustic!
The workmanship and materials used are great for a guitar in this humble price range and the result is one awesome little guitar with a fabulous voice! You don't just hear this gem you feel it too! The luthiers hit all the sweet spots because this guitar resonates with life. I'm sure it will simply get even better as the years go by too.

I'm blessed to own and play some beautiful acoustic guitars, but this little Martin has won me over hook line and sinker so will rarely be neglected sitting in a corner. I'd pick this guitar over a Taylor mini every time!

Martin knocked it out of the park with this one and I hope it receives the recognition it so well deserves!

One of the Best Values On the Acoustic Market

By Rob on June 17, 2021

I've had this on backorder since March. So, when it shipped last week, I felt like a child waiting at the window for the delivery truck. There is something special about a solid wood guitar this size. It has its own intimate quality. The craftsmanship is excellent, and satin finish is beautiful. I love the understated tone when playing fingerstyle, that Martin warmth and roundness that will only improve with age. Love the new Martin smell. Thanks Ben and Sweetwater!

Great guitar, excellent service

By Katie on June 17, 2021

I knew I wanted this guitar already so this review is more about the service and setup from Sweetwater. I ordered it by phone with a setup on Saturday and had it in my hands, set up to my preferences, by Wednesday. I'm apparently a Martin fan girl and this guitar is resonant and rings out in the mids in that Martin way. I had SW put Martin Lifespan strings on and they're nice, but i think I actually prefer the monels the guitar comes with. They are clunky in the low end but have a quirky resonance to them in the mids, whereas this new set sounds a little more generic to me. Still lovely. I'm no aficionado but I love this guitar and absolutely recommend buying it from Sweetwater to take advantage of their in-house luthier services.

My Favorite

By Bill Chancey from Mid Michigan on May 8, 2021 Music Background: An old man with nothing to do but play guitar.

I have 4 acoustic guitars Taylor GS mini , Ibanez AW54ce , Orangewood Ava , Martin 000JR. All are excellent but when I take one down to play it is almost always my Martin it was not the most expensive but it performs like it is. Nothing sounds like a Martin to my ears and this one sounds unbelievable for the size. If I could only keep one of my guitars it would be my Martin 000jr.
P.S. Ben is a great help and salesman.

Great Guitar!

By Chuck from PA on March 8, 2021

I always wanted a Martin Guitar, and even though this is not a top of the line Martin, this one does not disappoint at all! I was impressed with it's construction and quality components. It was in tune right out of the box, and just has a great overall sound and feel. I highly recommend this guitar!

If You Can Find A Better Guitar For 500 Bucks, Buy It

By Jan Jablonsky from Maryland on March 3, 2021 Music Background: Pianist

I hadn't touched a guitar for twenty-five years so basically, I was a beginner. I purchased three different guitars from various stores and returned them all realizing each time that I had to find something playable with a decent tone and one that was within my price range; I found it when I bought the Martin 000 jr-10. I can't say enough good things about this guitar and perhaps the best thing for me is the fact that I love to play it so I practice several hours a day, so that $... investment was well worth it. I played a Taylor Koa GS-Mini for three weeks, and to be totally honest this instrument runs rings around it. After a year or so, I'll probably get a more expensive guitar, and I feel fairly certain that it will be a Martin. This was the perfect start. I want to give a shout-out to my sales representative TJ Jackson who gave me all the assistance I needed and then some. It's nice to find salespeople who really care, which is something you seldom see these days.

Impressive guitar!

By Jeff Winter from Florida on January 30, 2021

I received my 000Jr-10 yesterday and did the required 24-hour wait before opening the box. I've owned a lot of guitars in 49 years of serious playing and was not expecting this to hit the high marks of some of the great instruments that have passed my way over the years, but I was pleasantly surprised by this little gem. I chose this model for the 24" scale length. Right out of the box it was in perfect tune. The quality of the wood, from an aesthetic and tonal perspective exceed my expectations. The resonance of this guitar is lively and the projection and warmth belie it's size. Although I am primarily a finger picker, I flat-picked a few chords, and the first thing I said was, "Wow!" This has a big sound for a small box.

Martin's Mexico facility is doing a fine job. The grain matching and workmanship are flawless. The action is on the high side for finger-style playing, but once I shifted to an open tuning and pulled out the glass slide, then the true potential started to become evident. I may have the saddle shaved to lower the action to my liking, but if you're a strummer with a lively picking hand, then the action is probably perfect.

All told, I don't think there is a better choice for an all solid wood, compact guitar under $1,000. As always, Sweetwater did an outstanding packing job, and shipping was prompt. I also have to give my sales rep, Aaron Regenold, high marks for his consistent service and for helping me out with the purchase. I highly recommend this Martin!

So much more than I expected

By Andy DaRos from Stafford Springs, CT on July 20, 2020 Music Background: Semi-pro drummer who also loves to play guitar and bass. 25+ years.

Wanting a smaller acoustic guitar that was comfortable to play on the couch and be compact for some occasional travel, I was looking at picking up a Little Martin when I saw this listed as well. Intrigued about the size, shape, and all wood construction, I kept coming back to the 000Jr-10, even though it was a bit more money. I had previously owned a 000 X-Series, which I liked, but did not love. I got rid of that guitar, and had somewhat come to regret it, based on the purpose of what I wanted a new guitar for now. With an upcoming vacation, I finally hit the Order button on the one I had chosen of the three available. This is the first guitar I have ever purchased on-line or "through the mail".

A few days later, the 000Jr-10 was delivered. The packaging was excellent, with the guitar in it's soft case, inside the original box, packaged well inside of a Sweetwater box. A+ to Sweetwater on that. I pulled the guitar out of the case, strummed a G chord (the guitar was perfectly in tune), and was blown away. One chord! My wife even turned around and said "Wow, that sounds awesome!" The sound is so balanced and so "Martin", as I can hear on so many recordings I love. Even for a small bodied guitar, there is plenty of volume and "oomph", and strumming across the soundhole or closer to the bridge gives you distinct, and still balanced tones. Being all wood, it has that sparkle to it that was missing from my X-Series OOO. I believe this also gives it volume that is as good or better than that guitar as well. My regret of getting rid of that guitar is gone! Also, the fit and finish is excellent. The team at Martin in Mexico has a lot to be proud of!

I traveled with this guitar to a beach vacation, and it was excellent in size for packing in the car, and also had zero problem staying in tune even within eyesight of the ocean for a week or from being in the back of the hot car for the 10 hour ride to and from.

I cannot put this guitar down when I pick it up. I've been playing for about 25 years, and the feeling of inspiration I get from this guitar is like no other I have ever owned. And this was just going to be more or less my "beater". I am now planning on putting a pickup in it, and will probably gig with it some.

While I expected a great guitar from Martin, even for $... I never expected the gem that is the 000Jr-10!

Outstanding

By Dave Detor from Syracuse NY on July 20, 2020

First time ordering from Sweetwater and they knocked it out of the park! My consultant Keith went above and beyond working with me. Guitar arrived a day earlier than expected.bBig sound out of a smaller body guitar. Quality build. Easy playability. Sweetwater did setup and out of the box action was perfect. This is the guitar I pick up most now. I play it in my home office and just sitting on the couch. If you're thinking about ordering this guitar just do it, you will be amazed at build and tone.

Fantastic Little Guitar!!!

By K Ng. on July 19, 2020 Music Background: Hobbyist

I've been a customer of Sweetwater since 2013. Patrick is my sales rep and I get fantastic service and follow up with each and every purchase. I took 2 years of guitar lessons in college, and after nearly a 30 year hiatus, I decided to pick up the guitar again. I kept all my music from my college days but since sold my guitars (Fender Strat and a Washburn acoustic). Fast forward 30 years, I decided to get an acoustic again. When I read about the Taylor GS Mini and the Martin Junior series, I knew that a smaller sized guitar was exactly what I needed. I decided on the Martin because of the 1.75 inch nut width and 24 inch scale. I was worried the Taylor may be a tad small for my hands. I've been playing the guitar for a week now and it is PERFECT! The action is light and there is no buzz. Seems like Sweetwater set up everything perfectly. The guitar holds its tuning quite well. And the sound is fantastic for such a small body. Great size to play on the couch or bed and just experiment. Very lightweight. And the top, sides and back are SOLID wood! For the price, this is unheard of... a bargain in today's dollar. Highly recommended!

Martin Performance on a Budget

By Sweetwater Customer on June 24, 2020 Music Background: 48 years of experience

The bad: it is not manufactured in Pennsylvania. The good: I couldn't tell. I started looking at the OOO body size to compensate for my loss of strength in my left hand after a cerebral hemorrhage. I told my awesome customer service engineer at Sweetwater my sob story, and he had the technical department set it up with extra light strings and a light action. I was delighted to receive the finished product four days later set up to my odd specification. I inboxed it and set about tuning it up. Wait. Already in tune. So I began to play. The tone that leaped from the box was balanced and lively, and much Louder than expected.

I'm pleased that the guitar I bought on faith has more than delivered. Thanks to the crack team who recommended, spec'ed out, and exceeded my expectations!

Buy it, I’d buy it again

By Doug from South Carolina on January 20, 2020 Music Background: Songwriter

Great value, good tone, smooth action. I was looking for a small guitar for travel and something to just pick around on at home versus a lap full of a larger guitar. This is my first Martin but If the fit and finish of this Martin is representative of their overall quality I’m sold on future purchases. If you are considering it, buy it.

Its a keeper

By Sweetwater Customer on November 2, 2019

Have two Tailor full size, and a Martin 000-42.
Wanted a more "knock around" sofa guitar. Tried the GS mini and this one. The GS mini has a tremendous following but I found it hard to play - felt cramped. Not so for this Martin 000jr. Very nice guitar. Easy to play. Tons of fun in a slightly smaller, travel guitar. Good sound, all at a reasonable price so you don't have to worry so much if the grandkids spot it. Solid wood construction is nice, but in truth it wouldn't have mattered. I have the cutaway model with the pickup. I don't have an amp so I can't comment on that part of the instrument but I did appreciate the hidden electronics.
You can hardly see it so the instrument retains it's clean, sleek lines.

Very pleased with this purchase.

One awesome little guitar

By Bruce Benson from Burgaw, NC on October 14, 2019 Music Background: 62 years and still I'm trying...

Crisp sound and excellent tone right out of the box. What could you possible get in a Martin for five-hundred bucks? This junior size really delivers good acoustic qualities, beautiful tone woods and a slightly smaller 000 body for easy travelling. This should have made the 15 best beginner's guitar list hands down. A sweet deal all-around.

I think a set of Elixir nano-web strings will be the icing on the cake.

Makes playing great again

By Lynn Pace on October 3, 2019

My first short scale. Helps me play and with the 1 3/4 nut also helps. The Martin sound shines. All wood construction, can’t wait to get old Father Time to do his thing. Just a great guitar...buy it. Thanks to Martin and Sweetwater....2 great companies.

Excellent Value!

By Pete from South Central Texas on August 28, 2022 Music Background: Folk, Rock, Country, Jazz, dive bar bassist

Surprisingly large, good, well balanced sound for such a little thing.
Excellent build quality.
Received in tune and properly set up, although I tweaked the truss rod to set it more to my preference.
Back of neck had some ever-so-slight rough spots, easily removed in less than five minutes with 1000 wet or dry once I knew the guitar was a keeper.
Especially useful for my old arthritic hands. I've played more in the few days since I received it than I had in the previous several months.
Recommended!

Great guitar...after some time and minor tweaks

By David R from Parker, CO on April 18, 2022 Music Background: Experienced Amateur. Used to play drums in bands for many years

I own two GS Mini's from Taylor (an original from 2012 and a KOA model) and they're awesome little guitars. I also own a Martin OM21 which might be the nicest sounding guitar I've ever played. I also own a custom shop Taylor 716ce which is amazing - but a big bodied guitar - so it's not always comfortable to play. When I'm hanging out at home and want to play, I always seem to gravitate to my smaller guitars. I think both companies are amazing with so many differnt great offerings in all price ranges. Martin's sound more "balanced" in my opinion with that nice, distinct midrange in the mix. Taylor's are a little more bright and clear (ie "high def") to my ears with great definition.

I bought this guitar from Sweetwater back in 2019 when it first came out because I love the classic look of the 000/OM body style and love my OM21 so much. When I learned it was all solid wood , I never hesitated to buy it - but when it first arrived, I actually didn't care for it. I liked the way it looked and the neck was great (a little wider and slightly longer than the GS Mini). The action was too high and I hated the strings (retro somethings). Very weird sounding to my ears at first. Once I changed the strings to phosphor bronze and bought a martin truss rod adjuster (impossible to adjust without one as it's so deep in the neck), and properly set the action, it bloomed to life. It has amazing volume for it's size and a very balanced, articulate sound. Like all small bodied guitars, it can overload with heavy strumming, but it can handle light/moderate strumming and really shines with fingerpicking. It's a keeper! I hope they come out with a sunburst or Ambertone model someday and maybe put a higher quality headstock veneer on it (vs that matte black "Lexan" thing). I hope they'll also improve the gig bag it comes with. It's quite flimsy and has virtually no padding in it at all. I'd be afraid to take it on a plane. Taylor offers much nicer bags with their GS Mini's. All in all, the solid wood makes it an amazing value - and guitars built in Mexico are really well built. It's Martin quality in a slightly smaller package and I play it all the time. Well done!

Nice-I can play it

By Lynn Pace from Las Vegas on September 30, 2019

I am 72 years young with arthritis in my hands. I have a 25.5 scale guitar that I love but it is a little tough to play with my problem hands. I thought I would try this 24 in scale. Wow what a difference. This Martin just fit my needs and it sounds great. This guitar is solid wood and it will be even better with age. It came to me set up perfectly. Nice action. It doesn"t have a lot of volume but with electronics it would be better. I just love this guitar. I can play again and this what I enjoy. Thanks to Sweetwater and to Martin for this great guitar.

An all-solid genuine Martin 000 in a 24" scale package.

By Sweetwater Customer from Houston, TX on May 8, 2023 Music Background: 20+ years.

Like the Martin Dread Jr released in 2016, The 000-Jr is a 24" (short scale) guitar. For reference the Little Martin has a 23" scale length and the Taylor GS Mini has a 23.5" scale length. Other guitars worth comparing would be the Martin 0-X1, which is the standard Martin single 0 (standard Orchestra) size, that comes in at 24.9" which is actually longer scale than the full size Gibson J-45!

The point is, not even all the really good smaller bodied guitars provide the same playing experience. The size of your hands and personal preference require hands on, that's not easy to do in 2023. So I'll do my best to compare the 000-Jr to a few other small bodied guitars that I own. I also own a Guild M120 (24.75" scale) and a GS Mini (23.5" scale). These are all smaller bodied guitars that would work well for travel. Of the three, the Guild M120 is easily my favorite. I can't speak for every Guild m120 off the line, but the one I have has incredible fret work and all the little details Guild really got right. From a perfect cut nut to the best hard bag of the three, yes I think Guild's bag even tops the GS Minis. For finger style play and flat-picking the single note clarity, sustain and sweet timbre put the Guild in leagues with instruments that cost a lot more.

* Comparing the 000-Jr to the GS-Mini
The GS Mini and Martin 000-Jr feel about the same quality, but they are so very different. On top of being shorter scale, the The GS Mini has a 1-11/16" nut width, laminate back and sides with an arched back that really adds to the volume. 000-Jr is all-solid wood, 1-3/4" nut width, a bit longer scale. The 000-Jr feels closer to a full sized guitar. I found for strumming, open and bare chords, the 000-Jr the winner. For single-not articulation the GS Mini a tad better, both guitars do both jobs well.

* Setup
Out of the box the set the 000-Jr playable, but in need of adjustment. The GS Mini setup a bit better. Post setup I found the 000-Jr just an all around more enjoyable guitar to play and listen to.

* Plugging in
If you're going to buy a model with electronics, Taylor's expression system, while not the best pickup on the market is much superior to the Fishman Sonitone. The Sonitone is value pickup line and it just doesn't sound great. An aftermarket pickup solution would be best for either guitar.

& Bottom line
You can't go wrong with a 000-Jr. I would say if you're primary use is strumming and playing, maybe consider the Dread Jr instead, but truthfully I feel the 000-Jr does a fine jump for rhythm playing and I would take it over a GS Mini for that purpose, albeit with upgraded electronics. Expect to need a setup out of the box. Fretwork on mine was very good and on par with the GS Mini. Same with intonation.

An all-solid wood C.F. Martin guitar for under $600. It's a case where you're paying appropriately foe what you're getting. I wish the gig bag were better supported, but it is what it is. I would recommend the 000-Jr

Great guitar, but needs different strings

By Oliver Scholz from Seattle on April 6, 2021

I love the guitar. It's the size I wanted. I compare it to the Taylor GS Mini, which, by comparison, has a more narrow neck, and laminate back and sides. I also tried the Taylor GT Urban Ash, with costs nearly 3x what the Martin costs, but sounds a little better in the bass.
The Martin was the right choice for me. This is my first foray into a steel string acoustic, having played only nylon thus far. I play mostly fingerpicking - classical, folk, rock, pop, anything. I needed something to expand my sound into.
The only downside: The strings suck! The Martin Retro strings the guitar came with sound dull in the bass - the E and A strings. Open they are passable (barely) but when fretted at the 5th fret or higher, they sound like a bag of sand hitting the floor. No sustain, just a dull thud. So I replaced them with Martin coated strings, and those are much, much better. I'm going to try the non-coated Martin strings next, hoping for even more of an improvement.
The sustain on this guitar with the new strings is out of this world. it just keeps on ringing. Not so much the bass, but the G, B, e strings just keep going. Very lovely for fingerpicking. Really forces me to get the technique right so I don't interrupt the strings. :)
Overall very happy. Just subtracting one star because It's a bit of a pain to keep taking the strings off to see what works better.
Also, I wish they had stained the back of the body something darker. That would really class up the guitar even more.

Martin Jr

We bought the Martin Jr for my Daughter to upgrade from a "cheapie" acoustic. It has great eye appeal, sounds good and plays really well. Definitely recommend.

Excellent Little Guitar (with a few small issues)

By Alan from Colorado on April 11, 2023

Extremely easy to play due to the 1 3/4" nut and low tension 24" scale. Mine came with a Corian saddle which made the guitar sound a bit boxy. I swapped the saddle with a Tusq and added Tusq bridge pins as well. I also thought the Martin Retro strings were a bit lifeless so after trying a few others (both 80/20 and PB) I ended up with EJ-16's.

My largest complaint is about the gigbag it comes with, as it offers nearly no protection. A travel-sized instrument should come complete with a substantial bag (check out the one that comes with the GS-Mini). I have been told that it will fit in the DJR hard case, but I haven't tried this myself.

It would also be nice if Martin offered the option to buy a pickguard for it. The thin finish on top scratches through fairly easily.

Unplayable guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on January 1, 2022 Music Background: 50 year player

I wasn't expecting too much for a $ office guitar, even from Martin. All six strings buzz badly 1-2 frets. No reason for me to spend time and money to make it playable. It goes back.
