Travel guitar

By 2Feathers from Michigan on February 26, 2024

For a smaller guitar the volume, tone , and sustain are quite good. Workmanship seems very good. This guitar is exactly what I was looking for. Needed something a bit smaller than a fury size to practice while traveling. I held back one star due to the gig bag and not USA made. Overall I would buy it again.

My Omission

In my review of this excellent guitar, I neglected to commend the salesperson Jack, who has overseen numerous sales for me; he's tops!

Very Pleased

By Hal Brunson from TYLER, TX on January 18, 2024 Music Background: Intermediate player, songwriter

I play parlor and smaller-size guitars, and I wanted a cutaway for open tuning and slide, so this perfectly fit the bill. My primary instrument is a Taylor Mini-koa. The Martin is slightly larger, though, and "growing on me." The tone of the guitar has improved has improved with time, a deeper, richer tone than the Taylor, and the ease of playing the guitar because of its smaller size is close to parlors. The guitar is beautifully simple and simply beautiful. I would definitely buy it again.

Glad I went with the demo model - better than new!

By Alicia from Colorado on July 10, 2023 Music Background: Casual strummer of worship and country songs

I've only had it a couple of days, but I love this guitar! I'm glad I went with the demo model. I studied the photos of the guitar before purchasing, and I could not see the supposed dent marked on the front of the guitar. When I opened the box that's one of the first things I looked for - still could not see it. If I rub my fingers across the front of the guitar I can feel a very, very slight dent just above the bridge. Honestly, it would have taken me years to discover if it had not been noted by Sweetwater. The guitar seems brand new. And even better than seeming brand new, it feels broken in. I saved money on the demo and got a better than new guitar!

Best choice for travel, modeling and just fun

By Bobby Stembridge from North central Texas on December 21, 2022 Music Background: 70 + years guitar but only 4 professionally + Bass 3 years.

If you want a small, light weight guitar with a shorter scale and a surprisingly large sound with the name Martin, this is the one. The body is slightly smaller then a 000. I thought it was a 000 body with a 24 inch scale neck. Not true. Having said this, the sound plugged in really surprised me. And of course I cant say enough about Sweetwater, Skyler McGlothlin and the fine customer service they provide. Anyone can sell a good guitar. No one else in this business pays as much attention to detail and customer service as does Sweetwater. I have been owning and playing guitars for 72 years and this is the best music organization with whom I have had the pleasure to do business.

Great experience buying new martin guitar from Sweetwater. Jeff was helpful answering my questions and taking my order.

Excellent couch guitar.

After about 1/16th sanded off the bridge and a change to elixir strings the guitar is fantastic! Rings and sounds louder than I had anticipated.

Considering a GS Mini?

By Richard Solid on April 13, 2022 Music Background: Casual player

Really surprised at how great this thing is overall. I was looking for a smaller (shorter scale) acoustic with electronics. It was pretty much down to this, the PRS SE P20E, and the Taylor GS Mini-e. I was able to play a GS Mini in a local store. Coming from playing a full sized dreadnought, it seemed a little too small. I researched specs on different models from Martin and Taylor (Academy's, Big Baby, Little Martin, etc) and Martin Jr's seemed to have a good balance between big and small. Slightly longer scale length, body, and 1 3/4" inch nut. The neck feels almost as substantial as a full sized and the guitar's overall length is long enough to get good leverage on barre chords and other more demanding fret positions. If you're considering a GS Mini or a smaller sized acoustic, definitely give this guy a hard look. With as popular the Taylor is, I don't understand why this solid wood Martin doesn't get more attention.

Have to add, this was my first guitar bought online and Sweetwater's service was impeccable.

Why I love my Martin 000 Junior with Cutaway

By Wilbur on February 5, 2022

I still love the D28 I bought 53 years ago, but we have both grown old.
It is still in great shape, but I'm not. I am so arthritic at 75, it's like putting my arm's around a refrigerator. To play for any length of time I have to recline when I'm doing it or the pain in my back ramps up.
The 000 Jr. Cutaway completely solves the problem. It's so small and easy to play, even laying flat on my back.
The short scale makes stretching for chords easier, and the cutaway lets me play further up the neck. I also am using a detachable arm rest I designed and made to keep the sharp corner at the edge of the top from pinching the nerves in my forearm.
The tone of the guitar is beautiful for playing finger style in a small room. I am a happy old geezer!

The Modern 018

By Bruce J from Minnesota on April 28, 2020 Music Background: Longtime

Been strummin & hummin for 60 years over 50 guitars I've owned and enjoyed over the years for various lengths of time. Multiples of Martin, Gibson, Guild, Ovation, Santa Cruz, Yamaha, Takamine, no Taylor on purpose. Handmade and even a couple of Bavaria Framus models.
My longest serving guitar for 40 years has been my 1947 Martin 018. Love it so much except for 1 11/16 nut. As I aged I just wanted a bit more at nut and a few modern features. Lots of good guitars now even the new 018 with 1 3/4 nut. I recommend $2,400.
Then I found this absolute gem the new 000CJR10-E.
It has almost exact dimensions of the 018 body with 24" scale vs 24.9". It is simply wonderful. Fun and delightful to play with a sweet full sound. Comfortable clean and precise each note rings out with excellent sustain. Fast smooth neck, richlite fingerboard a positive and the cutaway opens everything up to you.
I love the thoughtful simplicity. To have a all solid Martin that allows such ease of play... is fantastic. Add good electronics and decent gig bag and a real value to be proud of. I even really like it came from the good folks at Martin Navojoa Mexico.
They have a lot of pride and skill and it shows.
Experiment with strings, the retros are fine.
I dressed mine up with a OM pickgaurd, Tusq bridgepins . If you want a Hardshell case a 3/4 will fit or a classic case will with a bit more room. Martin is Martin for a reason, the 000cjr shows why perfectly.

Best Guitar Yet

By Brad Higerd from Savannah, Georgia on April 10, 2020 Music Background: environmental engineer by day, guitarist by night

With advise to put Ernie Ball 2570 Extra Light Aluminum Bronze Acoustic Strings on it and having Sweetwater set it up, it's now my favorite guitar. I'll likely eventually buy a second Taylor to compliment the Martin, but the Taylor I started with (and still own) has too small a nut width to compare with this (1.75 vs 1.685). As for the quality and sound, you should hear this thing on an all-tube Fender amp.

Amzing

By Brad Higerd from Georgia on April 5, 2020

Looks small and meaningless next to my Taylor, but it sounds awesome!
Playability, better than a Taylor. Sweetwater set-up the action perfectly.
I'll play my Taylor when time allows, but for someone struggling to text on an iPhone, Martin beats Taylor with this one.

Just get one already...

By kenster61 from AURORA, CO on March 16, 2020 Music Background: Advanced beginner or intermediate possibly. Hobby guitarist for 10 years or so.

Was very excited to see this in the lineup and knew I would have one sooner or later. Fills the void between full size and a travel guitar very nicely. I was looking for a smaller depth with a cutaway, parlor or concert hall-ish size that wouldn't break the bank. This is not a Little Martin-This guitar can sing surprisingly well for it's size and cost!!!!Have not plugged it in yet but I am sure it will do just fine. As an armchair player who does have shorter arms it is very comfortable. The fit and finish are as expected from Martin. In tune out of the box and hasn't missed a beat. I love the nice finish on the spruce top compared to the DJR which feels rough like they were just cutting costs. The neck is nice and fast, frets are smooth. I have a LXM also which is perfect for throwing in the car and scratching the itch. You are playing a smaller guitar but that is where the similarities end. This is on par with my GS Mini as far as quality and sound but I wanted the cutaway-love them both. I can't think of a situation where this guitar would fail unless you were in the need for the boom of a full size dreadnaught, then just plug in. Martin quality and Martin sound in a great little package. Matthew Klopfenstein was great as expected, checking up on me and making sure I had the personal service feel that Sweetwater is known for. The 55 point inspection assures you are covered in the quality and playability department. Martin 000JR-10E is fantastic-Thanks Sweetwater.

Great guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on November 18, 2019

This is a great guitar for the money. Nice sound. Very playable. Just a nice sofa guitar. I auditioned this one and a Taylor GS mini. The GS mini has a tremendous following but for me it was a slam dunk to go with the Martin. I felt a little cramped with the GS mini. To each their own.

To have a solid wood guitar of any size at this price point is insane. Couldn't be happier with this purchase. For reference, I own three solid wood Taylors (300, 500, 800 series) and another higher end Martin. All great instruments with their own voices, but I now add this gem to the collection. Comes with a soft gig bag. Wish there was a solid case option. That's my only negative for this guitar.

Martin for the win.

By Sweetwater Customer on October 21, 2019

This smaller auditorium size guitar with the cutaway design is perfect and beautiful. Martin hit it out of the park here as far as travel/smaller more comfortable guitars go.

I'd say it compares most closely to the Taylor GS Minni. It's a similar size but a bit more slender in the bout than the GS style and more comfortable to play in every way. It also sounds and looks better.

I own a Taylor GS Minni, little Martin, Baby Taylor and many others and have played for over 30 years. This new Martin JR with the cutaway is easily the best of my small body steel string guitar collection.

The size is great for anyone traveling and would be easy to take on a plane. It's not too small to not look and feel like a real guitar. It's also similar in size to a 1/3 size parlor guitar.

The sound is exceptional and lively yet mellow with the natural finish on solid sapele back and spruce top. It's my ideal mid-range accoustic guitar sound and is great recorded.

It comes with Martin retro strings that are mellow and rustic sounding, making the low end a bit muddy and boxy with the smaller guitar at first glance, but they still sound good in context of playing and are excellent for strumming. I prefer medium gauge gypsy jazz strings for clarity and precision.

I'm glad I saw this guitar online and Sweetwaters service is unparalleled. I prefer this Martin Jr cutaway to any larger sized Martin overall, regardless of price.

Now all we need is for some smart guitar case maker to make some good harder case options for this beauty.

.. preferably a light weight, compact, fitted polyfaom option with multiple outer pockets and high placed, long padded straps.. please.

Martin 000 Jr 10e

By Sweetwater Customer on April 15, 2021 Music Background: Rank beginner.

Of course it sounds wonderful but the slim neck with 1 3/4 nut is really nice for my small hands. Plays easily and looks snazzy.

Small guitar, Big sound.

By Rob Osterndorff from Milwaukee, WI on August 10, 2023 Music Background: Started playing guitar in 1976 at the age of 11. Spent the last 40 years working in telecommunications and being a guitar tech head. Play 6 string acoustic and electric and 12 string acoustic.

After 12 years of playing a DRS1 Road Series Martin, I decided it was time for a new acoustic. The DRS1 is in dire need of a fret job and I just don't have time with a day job and a gig just around the corner. I wanted something not as bulky as a full size Dreadnought but with the full size sound. I also have a X Series 000 that I wore out. I tried out a GS mini and yes, the neck was extremely playable, it sounded great but, it's a smaller scale than the Jr, not available with a cutaway, and the back and sides are laminated. The Taylor GS is over priced. The Jr Series Martin is all wood and the quality is what one would expect from Martin.

Thanks to a YouTube video I discovered the Jr Series. I couldn't see paying an extra $100 for a distressed Sepele Street Master when I already own a distressed DRS1. So I went with the OOOCJr-10e. What is nice about Sweetwater is they let you choose the exact guitar you are purchasing and I chose a beautiful Spruce top. The Jr comes with Martin Retro .12's. I wanted Ernie Ball Aluminum Bronze .11's. They wanted to charge me for the strings and a $99 set up. I've been playing guitar since 1976, I think I know how to change strings and set up an acoustic. Just a suggestion but maybe Sweetwater should let a customer have any strings they want at no extra charge when buying a new guitar. And seeing how the action was way too high on the set up, .11's did the trick and now my Jr is playable.

The gig bag is a joke. The Taylor soft case is way better. I'll looking for a real case.

As for the delivery, it was fast. In fact it was so fast that the FedEx person left my guitar at the front door instead of the back door, as I had specified in my delivery instructions.

Today I took the Jr for a test drive at band practice and it performed exceptionally well. I would definitely recommend the 000C to anyone looking for a quality guitar at an affordable price. Plugged in this guitar sounds and performs like a pro. Martin hit the mark on this one.

Adequate, but probably not for me

By M on August 30, 2020 Music Background: Wanna-be

I've had this guitar for about 2 months now and I've enjoyed it for the most part. I initially didn't like the lack of bass, but it sounds decent after initial break-in and a set of elixirs. I replaced the saddle with bone and lowered the action quite a bit. The nut slots could also use some reduction to get it right for me.

I do have buyers remorse because of the string spacing at the bridge. It's too narrow. I knew it from the specs, but didn't think it would be as big an issue. Can't fix this with ramping or slotting because the upper parts of the neck are too narrow as well. The pins holes also need reaming if you want the pins to fit properly - typical for even high-end Martins.

The size of the guitar is also a little uncomfortable. I think I prefer the feel of a full size body. The depth of the neck also feels a bit kids-size.

I'll probably be selling this at some point...whenever I can tolerate the $ for what I really want.

Returned

There's nothing wrong with this guitar, but there was nothing compelling about it either. I'm going to continue looking.
