John Chappell
Music has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing tuba in 6th grade—mostly because I was one of the only kids who could carry it—and quickly fell in love with band. That passion led me to earn a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern Mississippi, originally planning to become a music educator. But while in college, I discovered another calling: music retail.
What started as a part-time job quickly became a lifelong career. For the past 25 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping customers find their sound, whether it’s a beginner choosing their first instrument or a returning musician upgrading their gear. I believe in doing right by the customer—no pressure, no upselling, just honest guidance and real relationships.
Though I’ve stepped away from brass playing, I still perform regularly with my wife in Central Mississippi. She sings, I play guitar, and together we play both as a duo and with our full band. Outside of music, we have a blended family of six kids—including twin boys who keep us on our toes—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Music may be the common thread in my life, but connecting with people is what truly drives me. Whether on stage or in the shop, it’s all about helping others make meaningful musical moments.
As one of the School Relationship Managers here at Sweetwater, please let me know anytime I can offer help or advice.

Where did you grow up?
I spent most of my childhood in Haughton, LA & moved to the very small town of Terry, MS when I was 12. My family has land out there and have built houses there over the past few decades.
-
How were you involved with music before coming to Sweetwater?
My mom's side of the family is very musical. She played organ and piano for years at church.
I joined beginner band in 6th grade and played tuba and low brass all through college. I picked up the guitar when I was around 13 years.
I've worked in music retail for over 20 years before coming to Sweetwater -
Why did you first apply for a job at Sweetwater?

What is your primary instrument and what brands/models do you play?
Tuba was my primary instrument throughout my school days. My favorite is a Miraphone 186. Now, guitar is my primary instrument that helps pay the bills. I have many but my Martin D15 and Suhr S-style antiqued are my work horses.

Do you play any other instruments?
While guitar is now my principle instrument now these days, I still play some low brass to help keep my chops.

Are there any other musicians in your family?
I come from a very musical family. My mom played organ and piano in church during my childhood. She just sings in choir now. My cousin, whom is a year younger than me, would be the most accomplished musician/composer in my family. Check him out: https://taylorscottdavis.com/
