Benjamin Denen
My musical journey began when I took my first piano lesson at age eight. Two years later I received my first guitar, and there was no looking back. Music became my passion. By age twelve, I was playing guitar at church, and at sixteen, I started playing jazz professionally, learning to share my love of music with others.
After high school, I studied commercial music at Belmont University in Nashville, TN, and had the opportunity to travel the country playing music with numerous artists and bands. After graduating from college, I left Nashville to pursue a career in church ministry. Since then, I have also had the opportunity to compose scores for numerous projects and documentaries. Whether playing on stages across the country, writing music for film, or serving in a local church, I have found that music is a universal language with the power to bring people together. My lifelong love of that language is what has drawn me to Sweetwater, a place I feel at home.
As your personal contact here at Sweetwater, please let me know anytime I can offer help or advice.

What was your occupation before coming to Sweetwater?
Before coming to Sweetwater I was a music pastor in Pendleton, Indiana. I oversaw all things related to music and audio/visual technology.
-
Why did you first apply for a job at Sweetwater?
I have two passions in life: sharing music and helping other people. Sweetwater really is the perfect blend of those two passions so it simply just made sense.
-
Technical strengths:
I would say that my technical strengths primarily lie in guitar and guitar technology, keyboards and the use of virtual instruments via MIDI, home studio recording and related software (primarily Logic, Cubase, and Pro Tools), and live sound, visual media, and live streaming in a church context.
-
Instruments you play:
I play acoustic/electric guitar, piano, bass, drums, mandolin, and a little bit of Irish Tin Whistle.
-
Family info:
I have two wonderful children who are truly the light of my life.

Other stuff we should know about you (hobbies, talents, interests, etc.):
In addition to music, one of my primary hobbies is writing novels. I have published two novels, a novella, and have several in the works. I’m also a pretty avid gamer and an obsessive fan of all things Chicago sports.
-
Real-life hero:
This is a really tough one. I’d have to say that in all honesty, my real life hero is my big brother. He was born with Down syndrome and the way he tackles life with joy and strength is just so inspiring.
-
What's the biggest gig you've ever played?
You know, I’ve played in front of thousands and opened up for some really awesome artists, but my favorite gig I ever played was with my friends for a group of about seventy adults with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. They were just the best crowd you could ever ask for.
-
Who are some of the notable artists you've worked with?
I have had the opportunity to open for a number of artists and bands including the Charlie Daniels Band, Craig Morgan, Restless Heart, and Trisha Yearwood. I also studied under and recorded with Chester Thompson, drummer for Phil Collins and Genesis, John Fogerty, Weather Report, Santana, and many more.
