Improve your recordings in untreated spaces!

The Reflexion Filter from sE Electronics is the affordable, portable solution for improving the sound of the acoustic space around the microphone. By allowing the sound to pass through seven individual layers, the Reflexion Filter gently diffuses the acoustic waves surrounding the microphone, keeping the sound from bouncing back toward the microphone, which improves the detail and sonic character of your recordings. The best thing about the Reflexion Filter is that it easily mounts to any mic stand, so you can take your acoustic treatment with you any where you need to record. The Reflexion Filter costs a fraction of what it would cost to treat a room acoustically, and will dramatically improve the sound quality of your recordings.

sE Electronics Reflexion Filter at a Glance:
  • Portable and affordable
  • Easy to use
  • Improves the quality of your recordings
  • How does it work?

Portable and affordable
The Reflexion Filter allows you to record vocals, guitars, or any other sound source with a 'drier' sound without having to have an acoustically treated room. It's portable, and uses state of the art materials. It works... and it's a fraction of the price of acoustically treating your studio environment! Since it will mount to any mic stand and isn't anchored to your walls like traditional acoustic treatment, you can take it anywhere you need to work.

Easy to use
Simply position the Reflexion Filter behind the microphone and you are good to go.The stand assembly comprises a mic stand clamp fitting, which attaches by means of a vertical joint to the horizontal bar assembly onto which both the Reflexion Filter, and any standard fitting shock mount can be fixed. The microphone (in its shock mount) can then be moved both vertically and horizontally along the bar, and the Reflexion Filter itself can be moved vertically to obtain the optimum working position.

Improves the quality of your recordings
The Reflexion Filter has 6 main layers. Firstly, a strong layer of punched Aluminum which allows sound waves to pass through it, diffused, to a layer of absorptive wool. The sound waves then hit a layer of Aluminum foil which helps dissipate energy and break up the lower frequency wave-forms, and from here they hit an air space kept open by rods passing through the various layers. The air gap acts as an acoustic barrier. The sound waves then pass to a further layer of wool and then through an outer, punched, Aluminum wall which further serve to absorb then diffuse the remaining acoustic energy. The end result is tighter, punchier recordings.

How does it work?
The various layers both absorb and diffuse the sound waves hitting them, so progressively less of the original source acoustic energy passes through each layer. This reduces the amount of energy hitting untreated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. The Reflexion Filter also helps prevent any reflected sound reaching the back and sides of the mic. Its shape and size have been carefully tested to maximize absorption while keeping 'coloration' down to only around 1dB, and leaving the microphone's polar pattern unaffected.

The Reflexion Filter works by reducing the amount of acoustic energy hitting un-treated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. Sound reflections are progressively reduced in strength after passing through seven layers:
  • 1. Punched Aluminum for diffusing sound waves
  • 2. Sound-absorptive wool
  • 3. Aluminum Foil breaking up lower frequency wave-forms
  • 4. An air gap acting as an acoustic barrier
  • 5. More sound-absorptive wool
  • 6. Another layer of punched aluminum
  • 7. Four formed panels of state-of-the-art specialist acoustic absorptive material separated from the main unit via a small air gap.

What a cool idea! This is a must for anybody recording vocals or solo instruments at home. Now you can turn your living room into a professional vocal booth for a session, then back into a living room before your buddies come over to watch the game.

This is the perfect solution for anyone who wants clean and crisp vocal takes in a less-than-perfect room, and in a treated room it brings your vocals even closer to the listener and places them more evenly in the mix. I love that I can easily take it with me if I want to do some recording outside my studio, and everyone who has sung with my Reflexion Filter ends up wanting one for themselves!

Makes a BIG difference.

I was pretty skeptical when I bought this, but I finally gave in after listening closely to recordings I've made in my living room. I would now say that this is a must have for any project studio wit... read more [+]h an untreated room. Easy to set up and made with sturdy quality materials. One note on this-make sure you have a tripod mic stand and not a normal stand. The center of gravity is outward on this and is not very stable with a normal mic stand. close [-]

Impressed.

This is great! I used this in a treated room and it made the vocals sound better and more up front. I also used it in an untreated room where the mic by itself sounded horrible and you could just hear... read more [+] how horrible the room was in the recording. But when I used this in that same room it made the recording sound great like I was in a great room. You can aslo adjust the mic and make your vocals or whatever more or less dead. Awsome! close [-]

Not a gimmick!

I splurged on one of these before it was in the catalog and before anyone had much to say about it. I’ve been testing it out in a variety of applications. My favorite test was with vocals. I brought... read more [+] some gear to my brother’s apartment along with the filter, which I left in the car. I tried a take with a bare SM57 without the filter first as a reference; it was “boomy with lots of room noise. Disappointed with the results my brother took a break, wile I slipped away to the car for my “Secret Weapon. I was mounting the same SM57 to the filter when he came back to a metal contraption attached to the mic stand. Everyone is blown away when they see it for the first time. The next take was really different from the first one. We didn’t hear anything else in the room not even the computer. I also think the novelty can bring out a better performance from the vocalist. I don’t know how much it would help in a professional environment, but it’s a valued asset to my project studio. Although, if you do decide on one of these, make sure you have a sturdy stand; you can’t mount this to just any mic stand. I’ve had best success using the filter with tripod stands like (ItemID: StuBoom) and (ItemID: MicStdLt). Other than that, this is a great product; it really does a great job keeping unwanted noise from hitting the mic! close [-]
