We all know how important archiving our work is — who knows when you might want to revisit or re-release something? But few audio engineers will ever face the archiving task that John Stoll took on: archiving all of the audio from the United States’ manned space flights — thousands of hours spanning more than five decades and numerous recording formats (some proprietary, some extinct). After seven years work, Stoll estimates he is 35% finished with the monumental task of preserving these historic recordings for future generations and making them available for researchers today.
