About Bass Drums
The bass drum is the heartbeat of modern music. From the steady pulse of a dance-floor banger to the complex polyrhythms of progressive metal, no instrument commands attention quite like the kick drum. For today’s gigging drummer, the options are endless. Do you go for the time-honored tone recipe of John Bonham’s 24-inch acrylic kick? Or do you tread ground less trodden with a 20-inch mahogany or poplar bass drum? Whatever your kick drum proclivities, the bass drum of your dreams is waiting for you at Sweetwater. Read on for more!

Bass Drum FAQs
How do you tune a bass drum?
If you’ve ever been stumped by how to tune a bass drum/kick drum, then you’re not alone! There are several schools of thought. For modern rock and metal, a slinkier, looser batter head generates the click-y attack that the genres demand. For jazz and classic rock, many players opt for a tighter batter head to raise the drum’s pitch and generate a longer-lasting tone. Our advice? Just find a sound and a feel that work for you. The bass drum is very forgiving when it comes to tuning, especially when aided by today’s numerous bass-drum head options. Sweetwater’s article “How to Tune Drums” provides more options for shaping your tone.
How do you EQ a kick drum?
Most modern productions heavily shape the sound of a kick drum through judicious use of gating, compression, and, of course, EQ (equalization). Many producers will start by removing the “boxiness” of a bass drum by scooping out the 250Hz–400Hz region almost entirely. This tends to be followed by a generous boost in the upper mids (2kHz–5kHz region), where the slap of the beater really speaks. Finally, a bump in the extreme low end — which could range from 60Hz to 100Hz, depending on the production — tends to allow the rumble of the drum to be felt above the mix. For more great information, see Nick D’Virgilio’s How to EQ a Kick Drum video.
How do you cut a hole in a kick-drum head?
When it comes to cutting a hole in a bass drum’s front head, DIY options range from heated metal coffee cans to pencils and string. Our advice? Save yourself the headache and invest in a designated bass-drum hole cutter from Bass Drum O’s or Gibraltar. It’ll cut through that kick-drum head like butta’!
