I'm looking to do some experimenting with electronic / dance music and would like to know what kind of software you might recommend for recording. I'm picturing a midi controller and some kind of software like what Reason did awhile back.

I'd like to stick to a budget of $400 or less for the hardware and software as this is something I'm only going to have a small amount of time to dedicate to.
Thoughts?
