Versatile and Amazingly Affordable!

The Neumann TLM 103 Anniversary large-diaphragm cardioid condenser mic boasts a capsule drawn from the U 87 and transformerless circuitry - not to mention classic Neumann sound! The TLM 103 Anniversary is a great mic for any pro or project studio use and, due to its minimal self-noise, it's been used for classical recordings with a wide dynamic range, sampling (especially for very low amplitude sources), and Foley work. This mic is also robust enough for the live stage, as Jack White has employed the TLM 103 to mic amps in live situations.

Neumann TLM 103 Anniversary at a Glance:
  • Cardioid pattern to limit bleed
  • Classic design for transparent sound
  • Neumann's "TLM" technology

Cardioid pattern to limit bleed
The cardioid TLM 103 Anniversary utilizes a tried-and-true transformerless circuit found in high-end Neumann microphones to achieve its otherwise unattainable low self-noise and the highest sound pressure level transmission possible. By focusing on this pattern - used in most recording situations - the attenuation of unwanted rear sound has been optimized. Off-axis sounds are rendered naturally while isolation is increased. This also leads to a high feedback suppression when the microphone is used in live situations or where loudspeaker playback is a factor. For a stereo pair of TLM 103 mics, check out the TLM 103 Anniversary ST, which comes complete with an aluminum carrying case and shockmounts. Also available as a single TLM 103 mic with a wooden box and stand mount or in matte black finish.

Classic design for transparent sound
The TLM 103 Anniversary is addressed from the front, marked with the red Neumann logo on the microphone body. The K 103 large diaphragm capsule is based on the K 87, well known from the U 67/U 87 microphones. The capsule has a flat frequency response up to about 5 kHz, and above that, a wide flat 4 dB presence boost. The large wire mesh headgrille protects the capsule from plosive sounds and effectively prevents pop noises. These characteristics are achieved without resorting to corrective resonance effects. Therefore, the TLM 103 maintains an excellent impulse response and reproduces the details of music and speech without coloration. With the incredibly low self-noise level of the TLM 103 even the smallest signals are reproduced basically noise-free. As it is capable of handling sound pressure levels up to 138dB without distortion, the TLM 103 provides a dynamic range of 131dB (A-weighted).

Neumann's "TLM" technology
The letters TLM stand for "transformerless microphone." With TLM technology, the usual output transformer is replaced by an electronic circuit. As with traditional transformers, it ensures good common mode rejection, and prevents RF interference that may influence the balanced audio signal.

Neumann TLM 103 Anniversary Features:
  • Nickel finish
  • Large-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone
  • Pressure gradient transducer with with one-diaphragm capsule
  • Transformerless circuitry

Reviews

Industry Standard for a Reason
What can I say? EVERY nationally-known voiceover studio has this beast. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for my small VO studio. I've recorded countless projects with it and my daughter - who looks to be following in her dad's footsteps - recorded her two demos with it. There is a reason why this mic has been an industry standard for so long of a time.
Music background: Professional Voice Talent since 2003.
It's a Neuamnn!!
I'll start by saying, everything was packaged very nicely! Neumann, really out did themselves with the whole unboxing experience, their mics are definitely expensive, but, you actually feel like you just bought and paid for something really expensive! Nothing feels cheap, at all! Plus the craftsmanship on this microphone, is just next level man!

Now, let's get on to the most important thing you actually care about.. How's the mic sound, and what do i think about it? Well, Plugged straight into my Apollo X with my voice running through this mic, is way to bright at times for my liking, and can get pretty harsh, i also have a bright voice too so, if your voice is deeper, or alto even, this is the perfect mic for you..If your using no external preamps that is, But, mixing can also solve this problem.. However, When plugged into an external preamp, especially a very high quality preamp.. Something like a BAE 1073, this Microphone sounds incredible! I just laugh when some people actually believe that Digital plugins sound better than Analog gear lol.. Don't get me wrong, plugins are amazing, and they sound fantastic, especially Uad, soundtoys, fab filter..Just to name a few, but plugins still ain't beating pure Analog gear..

But, back to the actual reason you're reading this review lol.. The mic is awesome, not gonna lie! I'm definitely one happy camper, and will most certainly not be sending this mic back! There is a reason why artist like, Drake, MGK, Billie Eilish, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Celine Dion, J. Cole.. Plus many more!

Neumann are the industry microphones of choice for a reason! If you need a great microphone and have external preamps in your studio, this is a no brainer for you! Just get it and never look back, you won't regret it!
Money well spent and would most certainly recommend for any serious pro or home recording studio.

TLM 103 - doesn't disappoint!
So far so great! Crystal clear sound. I have yet to really experience this amazing piece of machinery but I'm excited to see what it can do :)

Major Record Label quality
I have used the Sony 800 g tube microphone on my songs as well as the neumann u87ai , telefunken u47 clones , avatone cv12, and many others. This is a very professional microphone if you have a good microphone preamp and a nice warm sounding compressor.
You will have commercial studio quality, of course the room you are recording in should have the walls treated and you should have a great interface. But I have no complaints about this microphone at all.
Has a nice color to the sound .
The sound is in your face.
No sibilance issues at all with rap vocals.
Just a winner .
I hope this information helps someone looking to upgrade their sound quality. Thanks Sweetwater for the recommendation and service.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?
Paul Allen
I'm still amazed that a microphone of this quality and craftsmanship can be offered at this price. I've picked the 103 in almost every blind mic comparison shootout I've been a part of, whether it's been for vocals, acoustic guitar, and even as a supplement to piano mic’ing situations. Incredibly rich character, yet very clean.
