Les Paul Standard ’60s: Born to Rock

From its carved maple top to its stockpile of premium features, the Gibson Les Paul Standard ’60s is ready to rock. 60s Burstbucker pickups and handwired electronics deliver a massive tone arsenal. And you’ll enjoy effortless playability courtesy of a fast SlimTaper-profile neck and silky-smooth rosewood fingerboard with Plek’d frets. If you’ve been wanting a modern Les Paul with a slinky ’60s feel and premium appointments, Sweetwater has your axe. The Gibson Les Paul Standard ’60s is the guitar you’ve been waiting for.

Burstbucker pickups deliver vintage PAF tone

When it comes to capturing vintage Patent Applied For (PAF) humbucker tone, nothing beats the sound of this Les Paul Standard’s 60s Burstbucker pickups. These magnets — along with period-correct unmatched windings on the bobbins — capture the subtle historical variations in true humbucker tone. Plug into your favorite amp, and experience smooth low-end response, complex midrange crunch, and sweet-sounding highs. These pickups sound great clean or they can be used to push your amp into overdrive for the legendary fat, snarling tone you can only get with a humbucker. Under the hood, the control assembly is handwired with matched potentiometers and Orange Drop capacitors, ensuring that you’ll hear the mellifluous voice of your Les Paul Standard ’60s in all its glory, even when you back down your volume.

SlimTaper neck and Plek’d frets for optimized playability

Comfort and playability were two of Gibson’s primary concerns when they were designing the Les Paul Standard ’60s. You’ll be delighted by how this guitar’s SlimTaper neck profile comfortably fits your hand in just the right way. For your playing pleasure, the rosewood fingerboard is buffed to silky smoothness and bound with rolled edges so that no fret ends impede your dexterity. The frets are dressed to perfection using a Plek Pro machine for optimized playability. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this process levels the frets with pinpoint precision, providing you with the most playable fretboard you’re likely to own.

Nitro finish for the look and feel of a classic

Gibson gave the Les Paul Standard ’60s a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” Nitro finishes not only look amazing, but they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities. The Les Paul Standard ’60s has the look and feel of a lovingly cared-for classic — one that will only improve with age.

Gibson Les Paul Standard ’60s Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Mahogany body, AAA figured maple top; gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish
  • Mahogany neck, SlimTaper profile, gloss nitro finish
  • Rosewood fingerboard, 12" radius, acrylic trapezoid inlays

Gibson Les Paul Sweetwater Exclusive Lemonburst

What can I say? This guitar is unbelievable in every way. Has the 60s slim tapered neck; the most beautiful finish on a guitar that I've ever seen; plays like a dream and sounds fantastic with the Burstbucker pickups it comes with. Can play anything from clean blues to full out Metal and excels at all of them. Bought this guitar in honor of my Dad who passed away last year and couldn't be happier. Thanks and shoutout to Thomas McLaughlin my Sales Engineer. He made this purchase happen for me and was fantastic to deal with!

Incredible Guitar: it looks, sounds and feels amazing

The lemon burst is the only way to go in my opinion. The 60's burst buckers are perfect for that Jimmy Page tone. Think of the whole lotta love track on the live BBC record. It's got that amazing, bluesy, clean tone, and a huge powerful growl when overdriven. The neck is really slim and comfortable. You know how people say these LP's play themselves, it's true! Do yourself a favor and buy this guitar already!

I took the pick guard off to show that amazing top. It does not deserve to be covered.

No Brainer...

Purchasing this Sweetwater Exclusive Lemonburst Gibson Les Paul Standard was a no brainer. It cost $ more than the normal priced 60s Les Paul Standard, but you get an exclusive gorgeous color (Lemonburst), upgraded AAA Figured Maple Top and $ back in Bonus Bucks for future purchases. In other words you get more and pay less. On top of that you get the two-year backing from Sweetwater.

As for the guitar ...it is simply unbelievable it's a sight to be seen. The fit and finish is absolutely flawless. The intonation is spot-on no matter where you are on the fretboard and I can attest that it stays in tune. I assume the factory Plek's frets and workmanship have a lot to do with the playability. The sonic range from the Rhythm to Treble is fantastic ...blues to rock and back again and the SlimTaper neck is smooth as silk. I could go on and on but this Gibson Les Paul Standard speaks for itself. In short, it's a high quality American made guitar that you can enjoy for years on end.

This is my fifth guitar I have purchased from Sweetwater and it is the only place I buy my guitars from because they always have my back. It's nice to do business with a company like Sweetwater that places customer satisfaction above everything else. Lastly, shout-out to my knowledgeable Sales Engineer Tyler Dworak for assisting me.

Fantastic Guitar!

The Gibson Les Paul Standard, AAA top, Lemon Burst, Sweetwater exclusive is fantastic, I loved it right out of the box. It's a beautiful lemony yellow, and the AAA top is well defined with a great inverted "V" pattern running up the center of the guitar. I got really lucky.

The sound is wonderful and it plays like a dream. I have it in right now, to a local luthier friend for a set up, and it will hopefully come back even better.

When I first got the guitar, it did have a fairly significant amount of static electricity on it, which was causing a popping sound when touching the strings, and a fair amount of hum, that went away when touching the strings. As per Sweetwater's suggestion, I wiped down the pick guard with an unscented dryer sheet, and that along with using Music Nomad Guitar One polish on the body, tamed the static after a while. By the time I brought it to the local luthier, the popping and humming had likely gone away, as they could not significantly reproduce the problem. Thankfully, so far, they have found nothing wrong with the electronics.

For a Les Paul Standard, it is medium to modest in weight at 9 lbs 8oz, but it still seemed a bit heavy at first. So far, I've managed to get use to it, and the sound more than makes up for the weight of the guitar. Maybe all that wood is what makes it sound so good.

Btw, it's my first Gibson, all Fenders before that, and I'm so glad I bought it. I'm only playing it at home for now, and the fright stories I've seen online about headstocks breaking, will probably keep me playing it only at home, at least for a while. I plan on taking great care of it and great care in the way I handle it, so it should be okay. Btw, I loved this guitar so much, I also bought a Gibson ES339 Figured Sixties Cherry. So I just hope I never experience any headstock issues others have.

That all said, it is a fantastic guitar, the best or one of the best I own, and I like the ES339 too. I'm so glad I got both. They are beautiful, play wonderfully, and sound out of this world.
