You Need a Large-diaphragm Dynamic

Looking for a natural, rich, condenser-like vocal sound - from a dynamic mic? Sweetwater has a suggestion: the Audio-Technica BP40. Optimized for broadcast applications, the BP40 features a large diaphragm with Audio-Technica's patented floating-edge construction, which maximizes the diaphragm surface area for maximum performance, while the microphone's humbucking voice coil eliminates electromagnetic interference. The mic's capsule placement (along with a pronounced peak around 4k) gives you authoritative vocal presence, even at a distance.

A versatile mic you'll find perfect for many sources

The Audio-Technica BP40's hypercardioid pickup pattern improves isolation, while an internal multistage windscreen and a switchable 100Hz highpass filter provide effective filtering of plosives and unwanted environmental low frequencies. The Audio-Technica BP40 also handles extremely high sound pressure levels, so you'll have no fear of overload and distortion when you use it on instruments such as electric guitars, toms, and congas.

Audio-Technica BP40 Large-diaphragm Dynamic Mic Features:
  • Enjoy condenser-quality sound from a dynamic microphone
  • Floating-edge diaphragm construction for optimal performance
  • The BP40's humbucking element eliminates EMI
  • Hypercardioid pickup pattern suppresses pickup of off-axis sound
  • Switchable 100Hz highpass filter for rumble and plosive attenuation
  • Internal pop filter protects against plosives
  • Rugged metal construction for years of professional use
  • 50Hz-16kHz frequency response
  • 3-pin XLRM output connector
  • Package includes:
    • AT8483 mounting clamp
    • 5/8"-27 to 3/8"-16 threaded adapter
    • Soft protective pouch

This is what I wanted

Picked up the BP40 about 3 months ago. I use it for vocal recording and rehearsal with a loud hard rock/alternative band. My voice is baritone and the style runs from intimate, quiet passages to full-on hardcore all out screaming.
What did I want from a mic? I had the following criteria (in no particular order):
-Minimal bleed from room sounds, other instruments, etc
-Pop/plosive rejection, low handling noise
-Full, open sound (subjective terms here, I'll describe more what I mean below)
-The ability to plug and play -- that is, no need for additional equipment to boost the gain

The BP40 meets and/or exceeds all of these criteria for me.
First, the fact it's a dynamic mic with a hypercardioid pickup pattern *and* high pass filter means I can record vocal tracks that sound really good in an untreated space with kids playing in the next room and the AC running. Does it sound better in an acoustically clean studio? Obviously, but a majority of my recording is done at home. Also, I almost always hold it in my hand while recording with no noise penalty.

Next -- the dreaded plosives: distracting, unpleasant sounding, capable of ruining an otherwise excellent vocal track. Yet it's surprising how often they show up in professional recordings and, with much greater frequency, televised or other live performances. Yet, I really love the sound of powerful, articulate diction on those hard P and B (sometimes C/K) consonants. The BP40 handles plosives so well, particularly with the high pass filter. The combination of the integrated physical filter found inside the screw-on windscreen and the high-pass effectively eliminate pops in my recordings, even if I'm right up on the mic screaming an intense line with a lot of heavy consonants.

On a more subjective note, the BP40 delivers that "full, open" sound I was looking for. But what do I mean by this? Over the years, with many microphones (both dynamic and condenser, but especially dynamics) I've found myself overextending my voice make up for the characteristics of the mic. If the sound of my voice during a performance (live or recorded) doesn't align with what I've spent all these years trying to hone, then I find myself changing my voice until it sounds as close to "right" as I can get it. Sometimes I sound too thin, too muddy or muffled, too bassy or top-end, or just too quiet. And making up for this by singing too loudly or in an unnatural timbre or vocal position is a quick way to kill my voice. This is not a problem for me with the BP40; it grabs the frequencies of my voice that are natural to me and throws them right out front. I just sing the way that comes naturally and the BP40 carries it forward, reproducing my vocal without me having to overextend into voice killing terrain. It's like a lovely condenser with a narrower focus -- that is, you will hear your lovely vocal and you won't hear the truck starting up down the street on your tracks with this mic.

And then there's the simplicity factor -- the BP40 behaves much like a (really, really good!!) handheld dynamic. Plug it in and start singing. There's no need to boost gain or fiddle with EQ or, in the case of rehearsal with loud instruments in the room, fight feedback issues. It is literally plug and play.

So combining all these things, this mic is cheaper than some other well known (and undeniably awesome) large diaphragm dynamics, doesn't require gain boosting (file under both cheaper and simpler), rejects handling and room noise (and drum bleed!) extremely well, lets others hear me the way I hear myself, and doesn't boom up my vocal tracks with every P and B sound. I absolutely love it.

As a bonus, I hear some people like it for podcasting.

What more could I want? How about this: hey Audio Technica, think you could do a large diaphragm dynamic in a handheld?

A superb Voice Mic

I am really impressed with my Audio-Technica BP40. It's almost as sensitive as a condenser. I also purchased the shock mount that Audio-Technica builds for this mic and now I get no unwanted signal to the mic. The mic stand must have been picking up and transferring vibrations into the mic. I tried the mic with a cloud lifter but did not like the sound I heard. The signal out of the cloud lifter was too hot and picked up extra "Room" sounds. So, with the pre-amp on the Yamaha MG12XU set at about 50db and the slider just above unity, I'm getting a very strong signal to the DAW with no room sounds. Also, it's like this mic was EQ'd for my voice.

Snare, Male Vocals

I purchased this mic after hearing it in Sweetwater's Snare Drum Mic Shootout, specifically for it's performance on snare w/brushes. It also had a very pleasing sound on snare hits, eliminating some of the ringing frequencies that might otherwise need EQ to tame. After receiving the mic and trying it out, I also really like it on male vocals, for its smooth character, and for its rejection of room noise. If you are looking for a Shure SM7B, take a look at this mic as well.

Most underrated dynamic microphone...

I own several of these mics. If you record bands live with everyone in the same room, the off-axis rejection on this microphone is incredible. Put your singer right in front of the drums and listen... I dare you. Sounds like a condenser without any of the harshness or hyped top end that comes with using condensers. It is also very quiet. If you are a fan of the EV RE-20, or an SM7 but want a quieter mic with better focus and less bleed, look no further. This is my favorite vocal microphone hands down. It's also really affordable. Well done AT.

Audio-Technica BP40 - works for me!

I use this mic for narration for my videos. Its robust dynamic range response and isolation capabilities are excellent. Spend the extra bucks for this mic and get the original recording as it should be. You will save yourself from the time and frustration trying to eq / filter out issues that come with lesser quality mics.
