Cleanest Small Diaphragm Mic

As a bass singer, this mic is GREAT for picking up your low notes, your "cut", and everything in between. Cleaner and more edge than other small diaphragm mic's I have used. You can't go wrong with any of the Audio Technica small diaphragm condensers. Amazing quality! These would be a great all purpose mic if you are trying to decide on one mic for your arsenal.

Honest and Powerful

I've used this on Snare bottom, Hit-Hat, Snare top as well as cello and have always had great results. Thankfully they've added a pad to the newer versions because this mic is HOT!!!!

"Best Bang for the Buck" Winner

I work in a small home project studio recording songs (vocals, 12-string guitar, bass, trombone, piano, and percussion) and I am extremely happy with this microphone. I'm getting great full-bodied and nuanced presence out of the AT4051-b -- and this is devoting it right now to my Guild F512 (both flatpicking and strumming), using just a touch of EQ on my mids and highs. The blind shootouts on this microphone and the DPA4011, KM184, and AT4021 were all extremely favorable. What's interesting is that more than a few sound engineers confused the AT4051-b with the DPA 4011! I want to stay confused.

This mic is killer for acoustic guitar

Great buy. Glad that I got these over the KM184s. Way better buy. AT makes some really good mics for the money. I prefer them over Berliners Cm33s and Rode NT5s. A tough call on these vs. Beyerdynamic MC930.

Great mic!

extreme clean

This microphone has been a life savor for both live gigs as well as recording sessions. For live stages it instantly seemed to give me more gain than the higher priced german mics. For recording pianos it gives an encridible clean sound. I liked it so much I bought several more to use.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

David Stewart

A terrific all-purpose small diaphragm condenser. The 4051 has a generally "bright" character to it, but it's not overdone (like some small diaphragm mics in this category). The overall sound is full bodied, which makes it suitable in a variety of applications: Works great on snare, drum overhead, hi-hat, room mic, acoustic guitar, and must be heard on trumpet!
